Concepts are Formed in C ass Discussions To improve the ability of the student to understand the ideas presented by others and to communicate his ovim ideas were the goals of the English department at Oak Park. The students were encouraged to express their thoughts both on paper and in class discussion. The great literary figures of our time and of the past were brought to life for English students, The major works studied by sophomores were A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dick- ens and Shakespearels Julius Caesar. While the junior classes learned the symbols of Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter and studied the Shakespeare play Hamlet. Shakespeare's Macbeth and The Return of the Native by Thomas Hardy were studied by senior literature classes. Many English students went with their classes to see the movies Gone With the Wind and Camelot and a modern production of Julius Caesar at U.M.K.C.
