ILLINOIS | | VOLUME XII OF THE 1964 SHIELD VOLUME 12 OF THE OAK LAW Enthusiasm and excitement, joy and sorrow, sympathy and mischief - a student's eyes see and reflect all these! As we capture some of the moments of 1964, we hope that you will see through the panorama of the year's events to the qualities that make our school and will agree with us that here at O.L.C.H.S. THE EYES HAVE IT! Priors COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL ( on XIE EV IES WITH PRIDE OUR DEANS MRS. JENNIE M. ORR DEAN OF GIRLS r] MR. PAUL E. BURGESS DEAN OF BOYS With eyes that are firm but fair, Mrs. Orr, Dean of Girls, and Mr. Burgess, Dean of Boys, are always willing to help students to see more clearly for themselves. The coun- sel of each provides needed guidance plus a priceless optional factor-concern. Count- less students have become more effective members of society because of the care and understanding and wisdom of these two persons. So too, we realize that a measure of any success that we may attain is due to the influence they have exerted on our lives. In grateful recognition of theirservicesfor the years past and in anticipation of that same unfaltering devotion for the years to come, we dedicate to them this 1964 edition of the Shield. Over 2,000 points were amassed during the year in various acti- vities. Phil Steffens purchases a bond from student council member, Nancy Lamparter. Student administrators who took over for school officials on turn-about day were (left to right) Harold Allert, Joe Kentz, Bob Snyder, Ed McHenry, Beverly Modglin, Marge Beatty, Ann Leper and Bill DeVries. During the student-council assembly, exchange students from neighboring schools discussed dating, homework, and cheating at studies. OUR EXCHANGE STUDENT Under the auspices of the American Field Service, OLCHS again participated in a program of promoting international friendship. With the arrival of Jose R. Decottignies from Brazil, our eyes focused on Latin America as we learned about our neighbors to the South. Of course, he enjoys the thrill of competition; but also, if he is good enough, he gains avarsity letter. To some, a letter might seem a common thing and of little value, but the work and dedication behind it make it more than an attractive symbol. It is the realization, at least in part, of the hopes, goals, and plans of the young athlete. Above are the members of the OLCHS Varsity Club. Not all are great scholars or even great athletes; nevertheless, each has contributed in his large or small way to the overall success of athletics at Oak Lawn. BOWLING Ist row: L. DeKracker, M. The highlight conference victory of the year came when the Spartans nipped the favored Rich East 56-52. Oak Lawn gained double wins over Evergreen Park, Lincoln- Way, and Reavis, with a single victory over Bremen. After decisive victories over Lisle and Plano, Oak Lawn lost to Wanconda 49-48 in double-overtime, in the championship game of the Plano Holiday Tourney. He shot an amaz- ing 51.4% from the field, making 175 baskets, scoring a total of 456 points, for an even 19 point average. Bruce also scored 269 conference points, 2nd best in the league. He won the school's rebounding trophy with a fantastic total of 274. For these feats several honors were heaped upon him. He was elected both honorary captain and most valuable at Oak Lawn, and by unanimous coaches’ choice to the All Conference first team. The Chicago American select- ed him on the Team of the Week, while the Daily News selected him to Special Mention All-State, and the Messenger Pressselectedhim as the Play- er of the Year in the South Suburban Area. VARSITY WRESTLING The varsity wrestling team has indicated by its competitiveness and determination that it is going to improve. This year's dual meet record of 4 wins, 10 losses, and | tie can mainly be attributed to injury and illness to key wrestlers. Of the returning lettermen, one is a sophomore and the rest are juniors. With many experienced boys returning to the team next year, the 64-65 season looks very good. Ron Oglesby has done a very fine job this season as his 25 win and 3 loss record clearly shows. Though small in stature (95 pounds), he is big in heart and determination. He placed first in the Palatine Christmas Tournament and lost only one match, at the hands of the eventual State Champion. Ron then placed first in the District Tournament and second in the Sectional tournament. Once again he was beaten by the eventual State Champion. Ron went on to State Finals in Evanston, where he won 3 matches and was then beaten by the State Champ, giving hima second place finish in State. Ron is only a jun- ior and will be returning to the team next season. He was selected as All- Conference Champion in the 95-pound class and Most Outstanding Wrestler on the team. FROSH—SOPH WRESTLING The two greatest factors contributing to the sophomore Wrestling team's rather unimpressive winning record were inexperience and lack of manpower. Because of this, the team's performance was inconsistent, sometimes wrestling well, and at other times, not so well. A number of boys showed determination and steady improvement. A few freshmen bolstered the sophomore squad and surprised everyone with some fine wrestling. Had the team had more balance and experience the record would invariably have been more impressive. Mark Gedonius with a record of 20 wins and 5 losses was selected as All- Conference 145 Ibs. wrestler. Mark won the District Tournament at Evergreen Park and placed third in the Sectional Tournament held at Downers Grove, losing his semi-final match by referee's decision.
