The beginning of school means something different to each student. To the freshman September and the changing leaves bring excitement and newness, a future of football games, study, and dances, all of which make high school the very special time of life it is. To the sophomore and junior September is the beginning of another year of know- ledge and a better understanding of the importance of high school in his life. But September Song undoubtedly means most to the senior. With its soft melody come memories of three years of events which will never be forgotten. Attached to these memories is a melancholy sadness, for this is his last year, a year of decisions and preparations and good-byes. But to all students September is the beginning of a Golden Year at Oak Lawn. these golden days I'll spend with you. Homecoming is the biggest event of the fall season, and the homecoming ball and crowning of the queen are highlights of the day. A pretty girl is a song in her own right, but our queen, besides being lovely, is active and personable. She reigns over the ball, and her crowning is the high point of the evening. In that golden moment she is probably the happiest girl in the world, and she is the ideal of many a girl at the dance. “You're Che Cop’’ Left to right: Mr. Wetzel, B. Stanton, A. Broyles, G. These three seniors are among the few semi-finalists OLCHS has had in the National Merit Competition. Their scores on the competitive examination were in the top of the top 1% of the U. S. average, and more examinations and interviews are coming. Each one of these students deserves our heartiest congratulations. | LETTERS Not quite semi-finalists, but top scholars at any rate, these people received Letters of Commendation for scores just below finalist level on the National Merit Scholarship exams. Such could be the case of our librarian, Miss Stutzman. For ten years Miss Stutzman has been running our O.L.C.H.S. library, a very important job considering that approximately 800 students use and depend upon library facilities daily. And she has done this complex job with quiet efficiency, always cheerfully willing to offer any assistance she can. So it is with enormous pleasure and a warm sincere thank-you that we dedicate the 1962 Shield to Miss Stutzman, for her ten Golden Years” of service to Oak Lawn Community High School. 14 . +. eee tag, ot + ys 2 hee Pe Pee. eae ¥ 9% % eae ee oe + st Pore fl “3 The library bulletin boards are appealing eye- catchers for students. Mr. Arnold, assisted by Mrs. Pardonner, starts with the totally unfinished voices of the freshmen choruses, and brings them up through Mixed Chorus and Senior Girls' Chorus to our pinnacle of vocal music, A Capella Choir. The Choir alone presents its annual formal spring concert, along with many outside appear- ances. Their Christmas record is heard on several radio stations, and its appearance is becoming a school ; | tradition. Seven hundred copies of it were printed this year. Assisted by our orchestra and guest singers, the Messiah is presented with great acclaim each December. The choir presents a popular Christmas assembly every year. Whether they're playing a lively march on the football field or a Schubert symphony at a concert, they always sound like the best high school band around, which they are. The Spartan Band is composed of eighty select musicians under the able direction of Mr. Pettibone. Besides playing in the bandin its forty some appearances each year, ninety percent of the band members are active in solo and ensemble work. Besides playing at athletic events and the annual Spring concert, the band is active at the Christmas concert, Southwest Suburban Music Festival, Memorial Day Parade, graduation, and many, many more. This big half of the OLCHS music Upeedeset al aT iat ed department deserves our praise and support. What kind of support? Why, buy Turtles, of course! From hot jazz to cool blues, the OLCHS jazz workshop unit is the swingingest group around. Though the group is just three years old, it plays at several local and out of town activities. The group plays asalarge dance band and creates a very professional sound. | | What does Robin Hood mean to you? Just a dashing young outlaw in Nottingham Forest? Perhaps, but to Bob Hiorns it means a trip to the Rose Bowl with all expenses paid, and a chance to play at the game in the Robin Hood Band. The Independent Order of Foresters selects fifty high school students to play in this band each year from thousands of contestants from the whole United States, Great Britain, and Canada. Out of the 1200 contestants in this district alone, Bob was chosen for the coveted prize. The aptitude for winning seems to run in families, too. Bob's twin Dick received an honorable mention in the same contest. “Young Man With A Horn CADET BAND First row, left to right: J. Olson, F. Eul, D. Bay, B. Buckley, D. Leslie, J. Fox, C. Jim Gierach has been in diving competition for two years for OLCHS, and with great success. Last year he won Ist in district competition and 13th in state. This year he again took Ist in district, against such giants as Hinsdale, and went up to 7th in state, missing the finals by only a fraction of a point. Jim travels to Hinsdale H. S. several days a week just to practice, which he never lets upon. Jim's perseverance and skill have made him our whole swim team, and one to be very proud of at that! A basketball game or a wrestling match is an event to look forward to. They give to the school the competitive spirit which makes a student cheer for his team, and feel proud of his school. Much of this pride we feel in OLCHS can be credited to the students on the following pages. They make our Golden Years shine with the brilliant luster of school spirit. 135 ER CR ey bret 1961 VARSITY Tel - 4 . Batieeacet tigeet i “ wee Py. % a re oe Tim Adams Sr. Q. B. LETTER FROM THE EDITOR As the year comes to a close and another Golden Year is ended, we look back on the events of the year with pride. We remember sports, Homecoming, musicals, plays, graduation. These events, along with the long hours of study, are all a partofthe Golden Years. We, the Shield Staff, hope that this book will bring back some of the assemblies, dances, the Prom, and finally countless memories which will be lost with age. To the members of the staff, the publishing of the Shield brings the harvest of this Golden Year. The long hours of hard work-planning layouts, writing copy, indexing, and meeting deadlines--have come to an end for us. We feel that we have captured the essence of the Golden Years’ and we hope that YOU will find it in the-1962 SHIELD. Don Babb Editor PATRON LISTING ALICE'S DRESS SHOP 4959 W. 95th ST.
