Now, less than two hundred years later, these thirteen stars have multiplied to fill thé blue with the luster of fifty stars, as Hawaii officially adds the rays of her star. With the addition of each new star, our country has grown in power and glory. So also Oak Lawn Community High School started with thirteen original stars: Adminis- tration, Board of Education, Faculty, Deans, Office Staff, Service Staff, Building, Sports, Activities, Seniors, Juniors, Sophomores, and Fresh- men. In as proportionately short a time, we too have multiplied these stars into fifty stars of organizations and catagories that add immeas- urably to our school as it is today. Our flagpole was donated by the Lynnwood Women's Club, and is maintained by them. Likewise, one flag is donated for it each year. Warted sent Charles W. Lawrence Prest Secretary Arthur Mac-Donald tgs, Milford S. Hoyd Lawrence P. Kuffel ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS William Douglass EDUCATION DEDICATION Our very first star came into being ten years ago this past Novem- ber when the members of the first Board of Education of Oak Lawn Community High School undertook the responsibilities of establish- ing our school. During the past ten years the members of our boards, through their untiring efforts in coping with the countless problems attendant on our growth, have reflected the pride and interest of Oak Lawn in providing us with the opportunities for an outstanding education. On this our tenth anniversary, we dedicate this book to you, the members of our Board of Education, as a token of thanks for your time and energies expended on our behalf. THE SCHOOL AND SOCIETY In the beginning of our country, secondary and higher education were for the privileged; the average man needed only a minimum of readin’, writin’, and figgerin’. But just as the stars of our flag multiplied with amazing rapidity, so too have the areas of man's knowledge. The modern systems of education are faced with the problem of equipping the student not only to cope with but also to contribute to the demands and needs of a vast and complex society. Lynch performs the myriad duties of Assis- tant Superintendent with an infectious enthusiasm that challenges each of us to do our best at all times. ADMINISTRATION The administration, another of our original stars, coordi- nates the activities and efforts of all other areas. Each year brings more responsibilities and decisions as the administration works unceasingly for the betterment of OTE Al RO MR. WILTSHIRE The details of the material needs of our education are fulfilled by our Administrative Assistant Mr. Harold Wiltshire who handles the business manage- ment of our ever-growing school, as well as the co-ordination of the schedules of our extra-curricular activities. MR. WETZEL As superintendent of Oak Lawn Community High School, Mr. B. E. Wetzel plays a vital role in our educational system. His unfailing patience and cheer- fulness continually inspire us toward greater accom- plishments. GRA Beg es This donndp Cl at med Mrs. Orr is the Dean of Girls and Junior Girls Coun- selor and teaches Advanced Biology. She received a M.S. degree at Western Kentucky State College. The star that represents the deans and coun- selors has twinkled always with a_ special friendliness toward students. We find the open door to their offices an invitation to enter and talk over our problems or to plan for the future. Their constant aim is to help us to understand ourselves. Mr. Burgess is the Dean of Boys and the Director of Summer School. He also teaches Algebra |. MR. BURGESS, M.A. T.C. Columbia University Our senior counselor and Guidance Director is Mrs. Emmel. Mrs. Emmel is more than glad if someone comes to her for help. If we are undecided about a future, Mrs. Emmel offers her suggestions. We are more than thankful for the guidance that has been given, for it has been deeply appreciated. SALLY EMMEL, A.B. Director of Guidance, University of Illinois. When a student walks: into Mr. Zajac's office, there is a noticable atmosphere of friendliness and help- fulness. He tries his best to resolve. difficulties that the students have. Many students are given, valuable advice that often help them through their years at Oak Lawn High. JOSEPH ZAJAC, M.E. Algebra II, DePaul Univer- sity, Counselor Mrs. Egli is the Freshman Counselor, and also teaches English. MILDRED EGLI, B.A. lowa State Teachers College 13 FACULTY One of the brightest of our original stars is the one that stands for our faculty. The members of th e O.L.C.H.S. faculty maintain a deep interest in the total development of the students into responsible citizens of our society. This interest, together with their understanding and aid, is evidenced not only in the classroom but also outside. FOREIGN LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT ROBERT HALL, M.A., Univer- sity of Illinois; Latin. Milton Zimmerman CUSTO DI ANS From left to right: Marjorie Jendro, Evelyn Henninger, Evelyn Valen- ta, Margaret Burke, Veryle Grace, Ann Kroner, Evelyn Scallato, Bernice Hendzel, Antoinette Workman, Doris Sullivan, Rachael Berg, Milton Zimmerman is representative of all the custodians. Their fine and thorough work keeps Oak Lawn in tip-top shape the year round. Neil Lyon is the building superintendent in charge of maintainance. A school the size of ours entails a number ot clerical duties. The office staff has the job of taking care of such matters. Theirs is a large every day task and, as one can easily see, is handled quite efficiently. Appetizing well-planned meals are served every lunch hour as a result of the effort put in by.our cafeteria staff. They begin work early in the morn- ing on one day's menu, and continue after school to work on next day's fare. Mrs. Margaret Burke is the dietician and head of the staff. Margaret Burke OFFICE STAFF Pictured at right is jazz pianist Art Hodes, who lectured on jazz at a student assembly. Mrs. Josephson is in charge of select- ing outside speakers and arranging stu- dent assemblies. Mrs. Dennis and Mr. Broderick assist her. From left to right: Ruth Silber, 1.B.M. Operator; Katherine Cuttill, Matron; Don- na Woolridge, Registrar; Maona Duke, Library Secretary; Harriet Armstrong, Bookkeeper; Fran McGreevy, Receptionist Secretary; Helene Kopp, Guidance Secretary; Lenore Lunden, Attendance Secretary. STUDENTS The following four stars represent the students of O.L.C.H.S. Work and study, fun and good times, friends and activities are common to all of them. Many will meet success, and a few will meet failure. It is up to the individual to determine what advan- tange his school life will be used for, how it will benefit him, how it will affect his personal char- acter, and how it will determine his future. pore SERGIO ABREAU Hall Guard 4; Flecha 2, 3; Stamp and Coin Club 2, 3; Mixed Chorus |, 2, 3; Baseball Laos Basketball. |, 2, 33 Class Treasurer 3. People, places, and things —three broad nouns that de- termine the lives we will live and what we will be. All thtee have been a: part of every Senior's four years at’ Oak Lawn. In problems Sen- iors will encounter during the coming years, their past school life will play a major part in the decisions made, either because of plans made here, persons met here, or advise gathered here. There are many happy and nostal- gic memories which Seniors will take with them when they graduate —fond re- membrances of dates, games, meets, dances, teachers, and friends. Seniors will also leave’ something of them- selves to linger at Oak Lawn. The Senior star casts an ever widening ray of light leading from knowledge and understanding gained at Oak Lawn to even more of the same and, with it, a respon- sible adult life. JOHN P. Elaine was the first student to be sent from Oak Lawn to a foreign country on our foreign student program. Her trip was sponsored by the Pep Club and the Student Council. Elaine was picked by the American Field Serv- ice to represent our school abroad. On September |, Elaine and 125 other A.F.S. students arrived on the ''S. S. Seven Seas’ at Rotterdam. Elaine met her family on September 15. The family included Mr. and Mrs. Haspel, and their four children: Jutta, 18; Ulrich, 16; Raimund, 12; and Vera, 11. The Haspels live in Heilbronn, which is the southwestern part of Germany. Elaine attended the Elly Heuss Knapp Gymnasium (school of educa- tion) which was an all girl school. She had ten courses, six days a week from 7:45 to 12:15. English was ta ught but Elaine spoke German most of the time. She described the school as strictly academic with no extra-curricular activities or sports. Elaine found that the German people are very interested in the American people and have a high regard tor the United States. On January 6, she said good-bye to the Has-_ pels and traveled to Berlin, and then to Rotterdam. Elaine and the other A.F.S. students sailed on the M.S. Ryndam on January 10 for New York. Elaine said of her experience: ''My stay in Germany was the most wonderful, rewarding experience anyone could ever have, and | hope that more students will have the opportunity that | have had. 58 Attending O.L. has been a unique experi- ence for Gregg, since he attended all his classes over an intercom. As Gregg puts it: Going to O.L.C.H.S. over an intercom sys- tem may seem unusual, but I've been doing it since 1958. Other than not being able to see the teacher and students, I'm just another member of the class.” Queenie Practice what you teach? $3e7 yas e e be eat pe ast: ratte 2381 Industrious Students JUNIORS TT gre | i The members of the Junior Class can look back on two years of school life filled with activity. Most of them are now in the process of deciding what their future plans will be. There are many things that figure into the life of a Junior. A few of these are the receiving of class’ rings and the sponsoring of the prom—the dance looked forward to by many. Many responsibilities are placed in the hands of the Juniors, but they are always handled correctly. The Junior Class is a star that shines proudly and bril- liantly. This year the various squads have totaled’over five hundred participants: football, 115; cross country, 40; basketball, 80; wrestling, 100; track, 100; baseball, 100. Athletics form a vital part of any school program: they serve the boys, the school and the community. The various sports events provide for the community, a point of identification with the school; they give to the school a sense of unity and to the students. many hours of healthy, supervised recreation. To the boys who ac- tually participate, athletics furnish innumerable lessons in clear thinking, healthful living, sportsmanship, and cooperation. As our great nation expanded, more stars were placed on the red, white, and | blue banner of the United States. These additions to our flag heralded our emergence into fields where we had never before gone, and info the world about.us. In a way, this same growth has happened at Oak Lawn. As a new school we had only a few activities, only those which were more or less essential to the effective functioning of the institution. But in a very short time our school had grown, and our activities grew to keep pace. A great number of new organizations sprang up. Some were designed to serve the school, some to provide enjoyment and relaxation, and still others to encourage special talents. Many activities accomplish all of these. Oak Lawn has also emerged into the world about it. We have several competitive sports, and some of our school organizations occasionally work with their counterparts from other schools. We at Oak Lawn are 95 privileged to have an activity program superlative in scope and reach. A summary of Oak Lawn's activity program reads, Something for Everyone. HOMECOMING 1960 : Apart from the usual school life that Oak Lawn students lead, comes an event unusual, glamor- ous, and exciting. A golden star represents this | occurrance. This star stands tor Homecoming at Oak Lawn. The dance was held in a gym beautifully deco- { rated in hues of yellow, orange, and brown, and | was very appropriately named Autumn Noc- turne. As the tension rose that evening and finally came to a climax, it was revealed that Martha Wettergren had been chosen to reign over the festivities of the eighth annual Homecoming. The class skits, the float, the football game, the half-time show, the dance, and the long hours of preparation for it—these will be part of the memories of O.L.C.H.S. Schools all over the nation began incorporating the study of foreign languages into their cirriculum. Oak Lawn started its program with German, Latin, and Spanish. French was recently added. Students in these classes not only learn a new language, but also the culture of the people who speak it. One of the biggest stars at O.L.C.H.S. is our Student Council. This elected group is representative of the en- tire student body, thereby giving everyone a voice in its workings. The Student Council constantly seeks to better student-faculty relations and bring any needed improve- ments to Oak Lawn. Some of its projects include the parking lot check, the distribution of concessions to various clubs, and participation in National Student Council Week. This star represents hardy and fun loving clubs such as these, which have an air of convivi- ality about them. Two of these organizations, the Chess Club and Boys Bowling, give members a chance to campete with each other, while affording them an opportunity to learn the finer points of the field in which they participate. The Industrial Arts Club is concerned with delving deeper into the various processes and workings of industry. All three clubs have one thing in common—a good time. Before school even begins, the staff has an idea as to what the book's theme will: be. All future work has to be directed towards carrying out this theme. In September the real work is undertaken. There is advertising to be collected, photographs to be taken, copy to be written, subscriptions to be sold. Added to these are two very large jobs—typing and indexing. There are also several planning sessions held during the year as the book progresses, to check work done and map out needed material. Staff members ut in many hours each week on the yearbook. When the Shield is sent to press, the Summer Supplement is begun. All the steps have to be repeated.
