FRIENDSHIP’S HAND ACROSS THE SEA Dierk chats with Alan, a junior at O.L.C.H.S., and Ruth Battenburg. Dierk dons a apron and helps out with some of the household chores. Dierk spends his spare time listen- ing to the Hi-Fi. In the school year 1958-59 our Student Council and Pep Club conducted a fund raising drive to sponsor a foreign exchange student at O.L.C.H.S. During the same time, 186 high school students in Hamburg, Germany, took part in an extensive testing program to determine who would go to America for a year of study. Six German students were chosen, and one of them, Dierk Lindermann, was sent to O.L.C.H.S. Dierk’s home in Hamburg Blankenese, a suburb of Hamburg, is near the Elbe River, where he often goes sailing. In his free moments away from his family, which includes his parents, four brothers, and one sister, Dierk enjoys hiking and photography. As possible places for his future educational studies, Dierk is considering Old Heidelberg, in Germany, or the University of Chicago. After an interesting voyage across the Atlantic, Dierk arrived in Oak Lawn last August to meet the family with whom he has lived this year — Mr. and Mrs. Battenberg, their son Alan, a junior at O.L.C.H.S. and their daughter Ruth. Although it was a New environment, Dierk immediately took an active part in our high school. Because of his widely diversified interests, he be- came a member of the Student Council, the National Honor Society, the Varsity Club, the A Cappella Choir, and the Cross-Country Team. A Three week tour of America with a group of exchange students will culminate Dierk’s year-long stay. We at O.L.C.H.S. wish him a happy and pleasant journey and hope that he will take-home with him many wonderful memories of us and our country. ie bbiddliiaad Dierk sits with his American parents Mr. and Mrs. Battenburg. Mr. Wetzel presents Letters of Commendation to the six O.L.C.H.S. seniors who received a high rating on the National Merit Exam. They are BACK ROW: Bill Drummond, Ben Mandra, and Senior Councillor } Mrs. Emmel, In the FRONT ROW are Marilyn Hurlock, Carol Cain, Diane Gade. Betty Meyers is not shown. The Spartan eleven got off to a slow start this sea- son with a loss to a non-conference opponent — Blue Island, followed by a conference loss to Evergreen Park. Then, a decisive 38—O victory over the Bremen Braves spurred the Spartans on to a win over the newest conference opponent Homewood-Flossmoor, fol- lowed by a victory over Lincolnway. Although the loss’s to Sandburg and Rich dimmed the hopes for this year’s conference title, the victory over the Reavis Rams gave the Spartans fourth place in the Conference stand- ings. Center — Like all of the other. linemen the center is a good blocker, but equally important is his ability to center the ball properly. Quarterbacks — The quarterback is the working “brain” of the team, he must be a good thinker and has to accept most of the responsibility on each play. The quarterback also must be a good ball han- dler, a fast runner, and an excellent passer. STANDING Bill Brooks, Tom Byrne. FIRST ROW Mr. Parks, Gil Laska, Leroy Drake, Keith Lynch, Jerry Lewis, Fred Hazard, Doug Glendenning. Halfbacks — The half- back play not only as a ball carrier but is some- times also a pass receiver. A halfback must have good speed and be a hard runner. Full back — A fullback must be a good runner and have the power to gain those few, extra, val- vable yards. Guards — The guards are not only good block- ers, but must also be agile and, because they lead some line plays, be able to move quickly. STANDING: Tom Fuessel, Roy Ryska, Jim Bartuska, Dave Baaske, FIRST ROW: Jon Cump, Mike Reithofer, Jack Adams, Mike Majercek, Mr. Shyrock. ACTIVITIES There is a time for some things and a time for all things; a time for great things and a time for small things. Cervantes STUDENT COUNCIL One of the oldest school organizations is our Student Council, sponsored by Mr. Adduci and Miss Greager. Patterned after our American democratic form of representa- tive government, the Council, which is the representative group of our entire student body, works, constantly for the betterment of our school. Among its many duties are in- cluded the supervision of the parking lot, the authorization of other school clubs to sell concessions at various events, and the responsibility for the success of our Homecoming Dance. Undertaking a new project this year, the Council has joined with the Pep Club to sponsor a trip for an O.L.C.H.S. student abroad.
