Prepared to meet the trials of life head-on, our Senior Class exhibits both the de- sire to advance onto some new horizon and the understandable reluctance of not wishing to leave OLCHS. In each face, rthere is a genuine touch of regret . . . a realization that the experiences gained here are once-in-a-lifetime things which no amount of success will ever be able to bring back. Mingled with the hesitancy of making yet another forward step, an almost eager expectancy can be viewed . . . the flush of excitement in attaining that desired diploma and gaining the still greater responsibilities which go with it. To those people, Senior is a magic word. It's the key by which one door is closed and the vistas to an entirely new mode of achievement opened. And even if you can't quite define the elusive word, you know it's still wonderful. qDQmAeQQaf ssosgmmcnshmmams L QNQX -X 'Vi U on I X XM J off' 3 ' x N xQg'CEr,,ii. s senior class officers X M gawk -3 x 5-HMA William Stapleton, Presidentg Pat Broholm, Vice-Presidentg Marv Proctor, Treasurer and Carol Jacobs, Secretary. Winters represents different things to some fourteen hundred students attending Oak Lawn Community High School. Officially, he is superin- tendent. But to us who know him he is someone to turn to in time of stress, a stable quantity that per- sonifies our institution. To some he is the ultimate in the chain of school commandg to others, the paternal influence that makes OLCHS one family. Yet to all he is the factor uniting administration, faculty and students. The man who is concerned with the intricacies of everyday school procedure is our assistant superin- tendent, Mr. B. E. Wetzel. Upon his shoulders fall the details and problems involved in maintaining OLCHS standards. He is also the administrator the students tum to for the approval of a thousand and one projects, and know that whether or not he consents they will always re- ceive an answer in the best interests of our school. Even with these responsibilities, it is the gentle, considerate sense of humor that has most endeared our assistant superintendent to all. board of education The Board of Education, pictured below, formulates the policies which guide OLCHS in the daily pattern of school life. Elected to translate the educational wishes of the community into a program of scope and depth, they have given new impetus to the position occupied by a schoo1's governing panel. Our present members of the Board are Warren O. Keneipp, Presidentg Lester E. Thornton, Charles W. Lawrence, Robert Stitt, Arthur S. MacDonald, Milford Hoyd, Lawrence P. Kuffel and Steven Redman. Probably the best indication of their success is the stature of OLCHS in the eyes of the community and the students As their accomplishments testify, they possess an impressive stature. IEELY- fr. dean of boys In a similar capacity, Joseph Zajac must act as friend and counselor to those who, perhaps more than any other group, really need it, our freshmen. Once discovered in the national talent hunt, the stu- dents are supported in college by funds provided by sponsor- ing companies. About 1,400 Merit Scholarships have been awarded in the two years of the program, and the winners are now enrolled in over 265 different colleges. Pictured above with Mrs. Sally Emmel, guidance direc- tor for OLCHS, is Dave John- SOH. Our other semi-finalist, Don Wheeler, seems to be boning up for the next hurdle towards becoming a finalist in the competition. semi- finalists David W. Johnson and Don- ald R. Wheeler were named semi-finalists in the National Merit Scholarship competition this year. The seniors have been listed among the 7,500 high scorers on the Scholar- ship Qualifying Test, a nation- wide college aptitude exa- mination given in 14,000 high schools. The semi-finalists out- scored 300,000 fellow seniors, and thus moved a step closer to the S4 million in Merit Scholarships to be awarded in the 1958 program. Merit scholarships are spon- sored by over sixty business and industrial firms, as well as by professional societies, foun- dations and even individuals. The Sears-Roebuck Foimdation is the largest sponsor, with 100 awards worth S500,000 being granted annually. . N e . ef xc alternates representatives student council Providing leadership in all forms of student activity, representative government at Oak Lawn takes the form of our Student Council. Organized extra -curricular clubs, as well as any class member, may petition to the Council for the right to conduct any one of a number of social affairs or concessions under Council jurisdiction. All money gained is used by the petitioning club to benefit its own activity. Yet, above and beyond the Council's governing student functions, it guides the way for a clearer conception of a representative repub- lic. The members, elected through home rooms, are the school leaders of past and present, helping to shape the destiny of OLCI-IS.
