Its first roots were firmly secure only five years ago. Since then, ex- pansion has been rapid. The faculty and the student body have grown larger each year. From the incompleted building where classes were first held, our modern facilities now. stand as a sym- bol of how a progressive community rises to meet the needs of its people. And still we continue to grow. Like the ivy, we send forth a part of ourself each spring. From the fundamentals learned here through the wise balance of academic study and sportsmanship, today's Seniors become tomorrow's adults. The step is important, perhaps the most important ever made. The advantages we have should be respected for what they are. The leading citizens of future years come from schools such as ours, schools where opportunity is always available. The four years spent here, the formative years, have benefitted each of us in different ways. Some will look back knowing the satisfaction of time well spent; others may not. But some things we all have shared. friends, classes, championships and near-championships, All of these things and many more can be included. During the commencement exercises, this year's graduates will hear a song which is traditionally sung on that memorable occasion, It is, in a way, a testimonial to the effect of high school upon our lives: OH WE LOVE THE HALLS OF IVY THAT SURROUND US HERE TODAY, AND WE WILL NOT FORGET THOUGH WE BE FAR, FAR AWAY, TO THE SACRED HALLS OF IVY EVERY VOICE WILL BID FAREWELL, AND SHIMMER OFF IN SILENCE LIKE AN OLD VESPER BELL. ONE DAY A HUSH WILL FALL THE FOOTSTEPS OF US ALL WILL ECHO DOWN THE HALL AND DISAPPEAR. AND AS WE SADLY START OUR JOURNEY FAR APART, A PART OF EVERY HEART WILL LINGER HERE. TO THE SACRED HALLS OF @MMY WHERE WE LIVED AND LE THROUGH THE YEARS Wi IN THE SOFT AF TERGLG FOR REFERENCE Do Not Take From This Room - AWN TOs oe Mr, B, E, Wetzel's job is perhaps the most di- versified of our school administrators, He do- nates his time to many projects, These projects range from athletic events and substitute teaching in emergencies, to attend- ance at music contests, His invaluable help is given to the year book staff, faculty members, and to students with a particular problem, Many times he must run interference for Mr. Winters, deciding which problems are important enough to pass on to our superintendent, and those he must handle himself, To a valuable member of the administration, our personal thanks and humble appreciation, ... the wise helpfulness of our superintendent, David F, Winters, to whom this book is humbly dedicated, We will not forget the many times he was wisely lenient and the many times he was wisely strict. We will not forget the true spirit of Oak Lawn, the spirit that Mr, Winters conceived and raised in the infant years of this school, and the many times it became necessary for him to remind us of that true spirit. We will not forget his awareness and familiarity with people our age and the problems we must cope with, His role as a wise and just father has carried over into his job as a wise and just superintendent during his five years at Oak Lawn, PAUL E, BURGESS, our Dean of Boys, has many duties, but his special talent lies in the handling of the problems of students under his supervision, Some discipline is necessary in any school, but discipline unwisely administered is ineffective. The door to his office is always open to any student and the cul- tivation of his friendship early in school life is often beneficial. His wise and thoughtful advice has the wisdom of many years experience in dealing with young people. A large measure of the credit for the high caliber of our student body must go to Mr, Burgess. JENNIE ORR is the Dean of Girls here at Oak Lawn High. Her duties are as varied as those of Mr. Burgess and she is more than qualified for he r job. The task of guiding the character of hundreds of girls is not an easy one. It involves a coordination of effort by the parents, the teachers, and the students themselves, Through her fine example her diligent efforts on behalf of the girls, and her consistent un- derstanding she has succeeded admirably in her goal. The high standard of our Oak Lawn girls are proof of this, The work of our Guidance Director, SALLY EMMEL, is most ap- preciated by the students when they reach their Senior year. It is then, when problems of vocation arise, that she is best appre- ciated, From the vast experience she has had in the field of education, she is able to offer sound advice on the future. Through her ef- forts our students have had the opportunities of participating in special scholarship program and aptitude tests. She has started and expanded a small library of college catalogues and other books of information for college bound students, For all she has done for us in the past, a special thanks is hum- bly extended, Dr. EARL R. ADAMS ARTHUR S, MacDONALD Donna Woolridge, registrar, and Vinette Marjan, book- keeper, are two of the many people who keep our school running smoothly. WARREN O, KENEIPP, PRES, Our school board has the re- sponsibility of providing the community with the finest ed- ucational opportunities avail- able. The high character and the sense of obligation that these men have is visible in the decisions they have made. Mr. Robert Stitt, Sec. and Mr. James M, Duffey are not pic- tured, Frances McGreevy, receptionist, is well known to all our student body. Her duties include switch- board, tardy slips, attendance re- ports, tardy slips, tardy slips. . . Helene Kopp, secretary, helps keep an accurate account of all school records. Wiser now and better prepared for the years ahead, these people and their classmates will give and leave behind their individual contri- butions to Oak Lawn Community High School, all of which have made and will continue to make our high school the source of our com- munity's pride. Some years they seem a little louder than before. Perhaps it's the size, or lack of it, that is most striking. This year, however, the Most outstanding Freshmen quality seems to be maturity. There is a more serious side to their nature. Life isn't all play and they seem to know it, at least for a while, anyway. Then suddenly, a breathless something asks you for direc- tions, and you know that Freshmen never really change.
