R. Adams, Secretary; W. O. Keneipp, President; Arthur J. Dooley, JR. Standing: Charles W. Lawrence, L. J. Castaldi, Hugh F. Devane, Deo F. Chapman, HISTORY OF OUR SCHOOL Do you remember when carpenters joined various classes? How we walked under the scaffolds in the lower hall, and sat in roofless rooms with glassless windows? We have come a long way from serving lunch in the Home Ec. room or having gym in 211, 212, or in the halls. We who were here last year look back upon those conditions, wondering how we ever survived. Today we have a smoothly run organization with cooperation between faculty, administration, and students. Heading our school's administration is David F. Winters, superintendent, and his assistant, Mr. B. E. Wetzel. Lockers this year relieve us of the load of books we had to carry last year. New classes opened this year because of the enrollment of the first OLCHS senior class. In 1953-54 we fared wellin the world of sports. Our football team was second in the new Southwest Suburban Conference. This conference was organized by the superintendents of the five schools it embraces. Our basketball team did not fare too well, but stayed in there fighting. Our wrestlers took the Sectional Championship and had seven representatives going to the state tournament with Phil Jurewicz winning the 112 lb. class state championship. Our newspaper, thd Spartanite, has been published every two weeks, and has been headed by Mr. Moore, sponsor, and Ed Berchert, editor. The Student Council in the past two years has been headed by June Shank and Chril Coniglio with Mrs. Orr as sponsor. The stage has been put to use with our growing band under the supervision of Mr. Pettibone. The Shield, a book of memories for all of us, was launched under thecapable direction of Don Thornton, Ed Berchert, and Mrs. Mackin, our sponsor. THE STADIUM The Stadium was presented by the Greater Oak Lawn Swimming Pool Recreational Fund of the Oak Lawn area. The contractor was Deo Chapman of Oak Lawn. Both the High School and the Stadium was designed by the architects Madden Connor of Harvey, III. The official dedication was made on November 7, 1953, at which time the Reavis Rams played the Oak Lawn Spartans. Members of both the Oak Lawn Board of Education and officers of the Swimming Pool Fund were presented. The program consisted of a speech by Mayor Harvey Wick; a talk by Warren Keneipp of the Board, Elmer Buell of the RecreationalFund and Dave Hefferman for the County Superintendents Office. Chris Coniglio, President of the Student Council, accepted the Stadium in behalf of the Student Body of the Oak Lawn High School. Dreary weather could not dampen the cheerful spirits and grateful hearts of the Oak Lawners. DISTINGUISHED PERSONALITIES AND BOARD MEMBERS AT STADIUM DEDICATION L-RHarvey Wick Oak Lawn mayor, speaking. David Hefferman Assistant County Superintendent of Schools, major, speaker. ACTION SHOT OF REAVIS-OAK LAWN GAME 5S RMSE HE SE DIN VRE OME FA Mr. Winters, our superintendent, is a valuable asset to the schoolandthe community because of his compet- ent leadership and radiant personality. Each day he contributes to the development of our worth-while citi- zenshipand strives to maintain the present high stand- ards of our school. His previous experience includes basketball coaching at Grandview High School, science teacher at Hillsdale High School, and superintendent at Casey, Illinois. Mr. Wetzelcame to our school with Mr. Winters from Casey, Illinois, and helped tremendously with setting up andmaintaining the high standards which we all try to follow. Heis the spark plug of our school and has a competent hand in all the school's complex problems and minute details. He directs office activities and teaches a class in bookkeeping. SALLY G. To some, graduation means more than the completion of four years of schooling, it means,in some cases, that thetime has come to face the world, to go on to college, to serve your stretch in the armed forces, to compete for a job. Suddenly graduation takes on a new meaning. Some people feel an emptiness after graduation, others feel that they have climbed another step on the ladder of success. Regardless of your conception of grad- uation, you all can see the separation of the big happy family known better to us as the first graduating class of Oak Lawn Community High School. Under ordinary circumstances, this class would be one to respect, for they have set very high standards of behavior, co-operation, and school spirit, which we hope the classesto follow w ’ cling to and improve. Now let us view this same class as we all ky w it. The obligations of punctuality and paying attention were held t- :ven though the halls were blocked by scaffolding, the construction we ers demanded the right of way, one stairway wasn't completed, and .sses that were being taught without books werecontinuallyinterrup sy noisy but efficient workers. Yes, these people must be given a or deal of credit. These graduates didn't deve’ 1eir ownaccord. Iknow we stated that the class was remarkabl made no mention of the guidance behind the students. Our f- .th its indescribable patience held the attention of their classe- | aged to teach underthese great handi- caps. Not only did ft! . like their pupils and make scholars of them, but they dev A dle citizens as well. If the school ' sot a flexible faculty, that is, one that could teach, in school wel’ anderstand the students, be firm, yet be an active part of th cia mctions, this class could nut have turned out as it did.
