Stage crew members did a fan- tastic job decorating the scenes. The audience became so involved that they booed whenever Queen Brangomar appeared. They likewise cheered whenever Snow White made her ap- pearance with her skin 50 white as snow, hair as black as ebony, and lips as red as blood. Dave McCabe added to the play's quality with his organ accom- paniment, as did several musical inter- mission acts. 30 Christmas Time The Oak Hills Christmas Dance enlight- ened the student body with a flame of good tiding. It was held at ScheulIer's Ballroom on the frigid evening of De- cember 28. However, senior Carolyn Hensley received special recognition for performing in 19 acts, conducting the ticket sales, and helping Mr. Tate organize the order of the show. Seniors Graduate At Music Hall Nervous smiles, excited laughter and sad tears were prevalent 0n the night of June 9, 1977 when 747 seniors partici- pated in the graduation exercises at Music Hall. A grand total of 168 schol- arships were awarded to members of the class. In addition, there were two appointments to military academies: Rick Benken to the Air Force Academy in Colorado, Tom Hammoor to West Point. The Valedictory Address was giv- en by Tami Knapp, who dealt with the past. Dana Williams, the Salutatorian, spoke of facing the future Mr. Hauck and Mr. Sweeder were given the diffi- cult responsibility of reading the names of the graduating seniors. Amid muf- fled laughs, smirks, and scattered ap- plause, Mr. Sweeder managed to mum- ble out the name of our foreign ex- change student from Turkey-Oguz J 56 June 9, 1977 Karamustafalioglu. Other memorable events include a standing ovation of graduation caps Much to the disap- proval of the administratiom, and stu- dent council's presentation of red car- nations. Tami Knapp m Valedictorian, Dana Williams e Salutatorian ll . many of us have reached maturity and will soon be thrust into the adult world. It is now our decision to accept or reject the ideas, beliefs and princin ples to which we have been exposed. We must determine our goals in life and shape our dreams into reality. 58 What expectations do we want to ful- fill? Which role will we fit? Everyone will answer these challenges different- ly. Whether some of us choose to enter an occupation or continue to study and to broaden our knowledge in college, we will remember the wisdom and ad- vice given us in school. We appreciate the efforts of teachers, counselors, and parents to better prepare us for depar- ture from Childhood and entrance into adulthood Tami Knapp The Graduates Say Goodbye To Oak Hills Fears for the future, of destruction, of rejection, of the unknown threaten to- day's society. Hopefully we will not al- low these fears to paralyze our thoughts or actions, for the world we now face is not without hope. Building on the knowledge, experience, and foresight of past generations, we may someday establish a world of peace, of joy, of concern for human dignity. The awesome responsibilities of the future compel us to develop capable minds and bodies if our dreams are to be achieved Longfellow once wrote, 'Look not mournfully into the past. It comes not back again. Wisely improve the present, it is thine. Go forth to meet the shadowy future, without fear, III and with a strong heart . Stevie Wonder The Jacksons .................. Wings HUSTLERI Cincinnati received national attention when Hamilton County charged Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt, his wife, and staff with pandering obscen- ity and organized crime. Prosecutor Si- mon Leis argued the case for Hamilton County, which resulted in the indict- ment of the defendents. This trial touched off a nationwide fu- ror over the conflict between the First Amendment of the Constitution and community mores. JACK F ROST NIPS HARDER Unusually cold temperatures, bitter winds, and excessive amounts of snow strained the nation's resources during the winter months of 1977. Cincinnati, too, felt the energy crunch. In addition to depleted fuel supplies, our city experienced a salt shortage 60 due to a frozen river which prevented barge travel. These shortages resulted in fuel rationing in schools; 50, Oak Hills' ciassroom temperatures were lowered to 450 F. Other results includ- ed an unscheduled week vacation and the cancellation of exams. BAII'I The United States celebrated its 200th birthday on July 4, 1976, with patriotic demonstrations which included ringing bells, firework displays, speeches, and parades. The highlight of the day's commemorative festivities occured in Philadelphia when the Liberty Bell was struck 13 times - one for each of the original colonies. The event, televised around the world, was accompanied by bells ringing in churches, civic centers, and schools. Other memorable events included a parade of 50 vessels from New York Harbor up the Hudson River and a performance of the Boston Sym- phony Orchestra conducted by Arthur Fiedler. Kidnapping became the popular pas- time of terrorists around the world. This craze was culminated on May 23 when South Moluccan extremists in Holland seized a train and a nearby ele- mentary school. Holding 106 children and 59 adults, the terrorists demanded the Dutch govern- ment fly them and 21 imprisoned com- rades out of the country to seek Moluc- can independence from Indonesia. The kidnappers, however, released the children and one of their teachers five days later. To relieve the nationwide fear and anguish, the Royal Dutch Ma- rines overpowered the terrorists and freed the other 56 adults. In the strug- gle, two hostages and six kidnappers were killed. Reds hOt The Cincinnati Reds won the National League's western division race for the fifth time in seven years, then steamed over the Philadelphia Philiies in 3 games to capture the pennant. Then, for the second straight year, the Big Red Machine won the World Se- ries, defeating the New York Yankees in 4 straight games. Johnny Bench was voted the Most Valuable Player of the Series. Joe Morgan was named the Most Valuable Player in the division. CDisaster ins Supper lab The lavish Beverly Hills Supper CIub became the scene of a holocaust on Saturday, May 28 when a fire was re- sponsible for the death of 162 persons. With flames reaching 100 feet high, the Club was described as an inferno. Dense smoke added to the confusion and trapped large masses of people inside the exit doors. After weeks of investigations, Kentucky State Fire Marshal Warren Southworth ruled that defective wiring in the ceil- ing lights of the Zebra Room caused the fire. The absence of fire walls and improperly installed electric systems al- lowed the blaze to spread more rapid- ly. The tragedy touched the lives of many people in this area in addition to those who were at the club. Others who were affected include performer John Davidson, who lost his musical arranger and five members of the band. lm 1' who? Triumphing over formidable odds, one-time Georgia governor Jimmy Carter emerged as one of the most phenomenal politicians in this century. Starting with no national political base, name, or backing, the peanut farmer from Plains, Georgia, became the first president from the Deep South since Zachary Taylor in 1849. Defeating President Ford by almost 2 million votes, Jimmy Carter proved that the majority of voters wanted a Demo- crat in the White House. The closeness of the election, however, was a tribute to Ford's perseverance in helping to pull the Republican party out of the disgraces of Vietnam and Watergate. Election Results: In an effort to encourage student par- ticipation in the political scene, the Youth Involvement Club sponsored a mock election. Unfortunately, both students and faculty were apathetic; only 71 out of the 113 faculty members, counselors, secretaries, and principals voted and only 1659101: 1987 students participated. Voting results are as follows: Betty Ford ...................... 1 Billy Graham .................... 1 Jerry Brown ..................... 1 Pete Rose ....................... 2 Ronald Reagan .................. 5 Others .......................... 5 Gus Hall ........................ 6 Lester Maddox ................ 11 Frog ........................... 13 Eugene McCarthy .............. 40 Jimmy Carter .................. 358 Gerald Ford .................. 1289 IN THE SDOTlIGI'lT - In three presidential debates spon- sored by the League of Women Voters, Jimmy Carter and President Gerald Ford discussed their views on domestic and foreign affairs. Daley, the Democratic Mayor of Chicago since 1955 and the last of the great political bosses, died on December 20, 1976. - Alex Haley's popular novel, Roots, became a best seller soon after it was televised as a week-Iong serial. - Rocky , starring Sylvester Stallone, was named Best Motion Picture. - Stevie Wonder's album, Songs in the Key of Life , was a gold record be- fore it reached the public. 61 SIPCDRFS SPIRIT SOARS AS GRIDMEN FORCE LANCERS TO A DRAW This page: a. Combating the chilling snow or fuel short- age days and the sweltering summer days with surprising endurance, we somehow managed to complete this project. Believe us, it's hard to design a page while wearing gloves or blankets. At times, the only way we managed to keep working was to either have a pizze party or to become slap-happy, or both. We enjoyed putting this book together - now ifs your turn to enjoy it. Opposite page: a. top row - K. Rhodenbaugh, L. Skroupa, K. Schmidt; 2nd row ... E, Holub, S. GulaCSy, K. I have gained responsibility, ex- perience in dealing with other people, and a desire to actively pursue my interests and goals. Above all, I have gained seIf-confi- dence and realize I am important as a person. Tami Knapp Oak Hills is one of the finest aca- demic schools in the city; It also has one of the finest sports pro- grams around. Considering these two factors, Oak Hills can do nothing but prepare you for the future? Hal Robertsoh What do you think could be done to better Oak Hills for the upcom- ing classes? Nothing should be done. It is the greatest school there is and up coming classes have a lot to look forward to. Sam Gilardi More freedom during lunch, a longer lunch period, offer 10- week mini-courses in business, clear the restrooms of the unbear- able smoke, and give students more recognition for personal achievements. Tami Knapp Donna G. Zimmerman Joan C. Zurlinden Jenny Douglas i ,9 What do you think about your exper- iences at Oak Hill? My experiences at Oak Hills have helped me grow as a person, The more and different kinds of exper- iences help you 'find yourself' e help you in the search for identity. The very biggest highlight was my first Best of Oak HiHs. John.HaII Did Oak Hills meet your expectations of what a high school would be like? I was very surprised when i left St X to come here. Everyone told me I was making a mistake and wouldn't like it here. But, much to my sur- prise, I did. We continue to search for something new... Something different... Something unique to each of us... Beca use we must make our own decisions! 286 288 , Keep this book around. Stick it on your book shelf or under your bed, or bury it with the geometry book you forgot to return, or box it up with your other high school souvenirs. Then some rainy day when you don't remember your history teacher's name or what your friend looked like, take it out and reminisce about all the little things that make memories so precious: friendships, cold Monday mornings, P.A. announcements, Senior Skip Day, hall decorations, getting your dri- ver's License, cafeteria food, weekend dates, parking lot traffic jams, Varsity O initiation weeks, and all the other things that are special to you. Putting together a book of this size takes the time and energy of a lot of talented individuals. What can i say to express my appreciation for a job well done except thank you ?
