WMDENT MFE 3.... - u .04.; 21 AFS - EXCHANGE STUDENT ttSchool always gives us a double feeling about life: it seems to be endless; day after day, the same way, back and forth, then suddenly it seems that everything is over and it went so fast. I was exposed to so many different things in school here a schedule, subjects, rules a that it made a big change in the way I did things. But besides the academic aspect of school there are people, and people are basically the same whether in Oak Hills, this place all of you know, or in Juiz de Fora, my City in Brazil, somewhere you never heard about. The great challenge for me this year was to learn how to see people just as people, regardless of the different fac- ades they have; and Oak Hills made me realize that. Because of that Oak Hills will be remembered as an important part of my life in Cincinnati? Maria 22 III was born in Talca, a city of Chile. It was through a program called Youth For Under- standing, that I came to the United States of America. I had always a desire to know in reality the life and ways of its people. All through my life I was puzzled about what I heard of America. On arriving and after living among its people I could realize that the image I had in mind was erroneous be- cause many of the advantages and comforts that people have here are also found in the many countries of the world. We Latins have different customs and the values of our culture cannot make us be cold or indifferent to people. When I return to my country I will remember all of you with fondness and taking with me an experience which has been very enriching to me. I cannot forget all the nice people who made my stay here very hospitable? J uan 23 n-m: fI-dm 67:20 OHEOE 24 Opposite page: a. 811's winning float 7 dWhale it to Tam, Moby Dick; b. Wasntt our graduation abso- lutely beautifullh With these words, Sen- ior Pam Mullen seemed to sum up the opinion of the majority of the 722 senior graduates who participated in the 1975 commencement exercises on June 6th at Music Hall. Everything about the program was carefully planned by class principal, Richard Hauck, and moved as smoothly as could be imagined. The valedictory and salutatory addresses presented mov- ingly by Jan Church and Dirk Williams spoke meaningfully 0f the encouragement for learning given them by their parents, friends, and teachers. The choir sang two beautiful, traditional numbers, ttYoutH Never Walk Alone,,, and ttBattle Hymn 0f the Republic ,. with the audience joining in for the final verse. When the class was declared officially ttcommencedh a few hats flew, and a few tears fell, and a lot of bright smiles gleamed, as another graduating class left the halls of Oak Hills High School. 58 Opposite page: a, Jan Church, valedictnrian; b, Invocation; c, Willard Sweeder, principal; d. Students are given forty-five minutes for their lunch and activities, The public is in- vited t0 Diamond Oaks for ser- vices. Women can have their hair set, or leave their children at the nursery school. The student body is given much more freedom and so the students are much more independent. A group of parents, concerned over the possibie misuse of elementary health teachers, resource materials, appealed to Dr. McMahon and then to the Board to discontinue use of such materials. The complaint made many of our local newspapers, and at times went beyond the problem of those particular teaching aids and into the broader realm of academic freedom. As school closed, the Board had made no decision favoring the abolishment of the controversial materials. Other board members are Edwin Price, J . Walter Reece, Rob- ert Huber, and Charles Eckert. Although the Art Club disbanded, students still main- tained the high standards of the past when decorating the lobby and showcases. Christmas decorations were particularly delightful and well-received. For the first time in Oak Hills history an art fair was held, featuring works from students of all ages throughout the dis- trict. It seems the music dept. spent much of its energy preparing for Dec. and April. The usual pre-Christmas rush found the choral groups doing considerable caroln ing, then joining with the band for the yearly Christ- mas Concert. April brought the opportunity for concert choir to sing with the Cincinnati Symphony, while all music students prepared for the best HBest of Oak Hills,H yet. Jules Buffington . Spirit seemed to be the hallmark of the 1974 edition of the Highlander foot- ball squad under the leadership of Head Coach Rutenschroer. Although ranked low in the pre-season ratings, the High- lander squad battled their way to a very respectable 7-3 record on the season, and captured OHts 100th varsity victory in the game with Fairfieid. For the first time, a bonfire pep rally was held on the night before Homecoming to build spirit for the game against Cole- rain. The Highlanders were first in con- tention for the league crown, coming into the last league game of the season with Mt. Healthy. They had defeated all earlier league opponents. The Scots needed a victory or a tie to maintain their hold on the title but failed, and had to settle for a co-championship with Mt. Healthy, losing to the Owls 17-7. J MATSCOTS Matscots had a prosperous season, sprinkled with fun, under the adviserghip of Miss Maureen Mattie. They started off the year with a highly successful carwash, washing over 200 cars with the aid of the wrestlers. Selling Christmas cars in November, baked goods at all home meets, and running these meets kept the girls busy and the treasury well- endowed. The responsibility of running the H.C.S.AlA. tournament was an enormous one, but the Matscots were equal to the chore. In addition to cheering their hearts out at all meets and backing the boys who went to the state touma- ment, the girls teamed with the wrestlers for an act which often brought the house down in the Best of OH. The come- dy routine featured the faces and torsos of the girls, but the gorgeous legs of the wrestlers. A fun year for all! Sitting L. to R: T. Kuhlman, L Young, T. LaScalea, B. Once again they added to their coffers by selling Valentine telegrams, which have become something of a tradition. The girls also participated in a pep rally, as did some of the swimming team members who tried, without a whole lot of success, to look like the Aquascots. Pyramid, L. to R; S. Wehmeier, D. At away meets they recorded statistics for each event for scouting reports. The girls sported new uniforms this year with interchangeable skirts and slacks to allow for changes in temperature. Two bake sales helped to provide snacks for the team at meets. The season ended with a party for track team members and Spikescots. Miss Sander and Mrs. Yung served as co-sponsors. 1515 Row: K. Later in the year they sold suckers to provide money for extra materials for French classes. A spring trip to Kings Island completed the year, presided over by adviser, Mrs. Tam, .and president, Pam Grant. German Club, led as always by Mr. Kowzan, held bake sales, a skating party, paper drive, and a square dance with an award for best costume, which kept all busy. Spanish Club, advised by Miss Brewer, experienced gourmet cooking at LaContina. La- tin Club started off with a bang by winning an award for their Home- coming decorations, based around a mythological theme. Moneys raised helped pay for entertaining orphans. Activities such as running the concession stand at football games; lollipop, candy cane, and oil lamp sales; float compeition during Homecoming; and the Jr.-Sr. Prom kept class members busy and bolstered a sagging financial situation. Studious Jrfs had their first doses of tough English electives, and copies of Huck Finn, and The Deerslayer protruded from jeans pockets in required Amer; Lit., courses With a successful year behind them, the Jr. class looks forward to being seniors so they can truly ujust sit back and re- laxf, Sandy Aemi Mike Agnew Mindy Aide John Albert Marilyn Alderson Sandra Allen Sue Ambrosius Kelly SENIORS? Well, we can,t say our years at Oak Hills didn7t have their ups and downs. Everyone knows about the downs, but the ups a well . . . The big ttsurpriseh of our senior year was winning first place float during Homecoming. Somehow we had wondered if we ever would. Pep Week was great, probably because it was our last one. Having the Prom to look forward to made the end of the year hurry by It was so nice to be the guests. Much of the year was spent keeping active in sports, clubs, jobs, and filling out endless applica- tions for college or full-time jobs. In some ways it was hard to see it all end with graduation. But as the words to a popular song say: Yesterday is yesterday, The past has come and gone. Nostalgiajust gets in the way; Lets start movint on! 226 Rugs A Abernathy Robert P. Ahlers James 1. Well that,s what I am attempting to do right now. It isn,t all that easy, believe me. Glenn Pogue, our chief photographer, assisted by Bill Mc- Phillips, had the tremendous task of taking all of our many needed pictures. He was given many spur-of-the- moment assignments, which he did his best to deliver. Of course our section editors and their help were irreplace- able. Thanks for their Thursdays after school, their week- ends before deadlines, and their creative talents. Dee Elmore ................................
