Itjust doesn't seem like the Oakie High I once knew. Everyone is ru shed so much; it's like a rat race. Instead of being tired just in the morning, now I'm tired all day. It hasn't affected me at all, except I'm a little grouchier - earlier. Now school doesn't take up your whole day. It's not hard to participate in extra- curricular activities of you want to. It was a very intelligent solution to the overcrowded problem at Oak Hills. llI don't like the extended day, but I realize it had to be done because there just isn 'tenough room! . . . . . . extended clay: a slight headache 8 eta . I think the '75 class is very friendly and I'm glad our schedules overlap. I like it because I can't stand most sophomores I feel that the sophomores don't even seem to be around. This has become a school that is divided. for juniors and seniors, and . . . . . . I feel all I do is go to school. I like not having to get up so early, but with sports I don't get home until 7:00 or later.';' By the time we get home, there's no time left for our selves. The sophomores stick together, but everyone else acts out of it. I feel very little unity with other sopho- mores and practically none with juniors and seniors. Seniors and juniors seem to own the school in the morning, but we take over in the afternoon. Extended day makes the Juniors and Seniors seem like they go to a different school. The school seems empty and lonely. Here it is just a bunch of empty faces. When 2:30 gets here and you see people leaving, you start to fall asleep. You get bored and your grades go down. I've already heard my teachers say that we are stupid. 15 that fair? 21 PAIN for the sophomores 1', like it - I can stay up later at night and sleep later in the morning. We really have the bum end of the deal! The rules and regulations are only fair. I get more hassle in high school for being in the halls than I did when I went to C. 0. Harrison! X, m ' gs. I'It's sickening when you have to walk in- to ajohn with a teacher staring at you! As a teacher I'm sorry to see the lack of self-discipline by a minority which forced controls to be imposed on the innocent majority of students. Kids are taking a negative view about teacher 5. They don't respect them as much as they would if the teachers would trust them. It's great that the teachers are doing their job, even though some hate what they have to do. It takes a lot of time and effort, but it has given me a chance to meet other girls whom I would otherwise never have gotten a chance to meet. Oakettes is one thing that 111 never forget and always miss. Good luck next year, Oakettes. Sharon Van Schoik, '73 The Oak Hills band is an in- teresting organization to belong to. During the football season it provides an economically cheap way to see the games and the thrill of marchng through the football field mud. This thrill is also felt when march- ing in numerous parades, play- ing at King's Island, and being part of fund-raising projects. Perhaps the most rewarding thing about being a member of the band is being part of such a friendly and energetic group. June McBrayer, '74 110 Teach your children well is more than just a song, it's a happening. It takes experience to learn and you have to learn before you can teach. This year was totally new to me. Being a cheerleader made use of every drop of energy I had. I was not only a part of the school, but of the teams as well. I love to cheer. Just the thrill of yelling your head off to encourage the team is great . t . well, you'iljust have to try it sometime. Believe me, school is more than a place to learn his- tory, math, and whatewr. It's a place to live. I always love a chal- lenge, and school has to be one of the toughest! Becky Prem, '75 Council is our voice. It was an opportunity to meet new people and learn about their ideas. I think it's important to become involved in extracurricular acti- vities to achieve school spirit and new experiences. Chuck Eckert, '75 Half-time was never a dull moment when the Oak Hills marching band took the field. They provided entertainment at all home football and basketball games and in community parades. Funds were earned from the band - sponsored Las Vegas Nite, Majorette Competition, and The Best of Oak Hills. These funds helped pay for new band uni forms. The band was directed by Mr. Thomas Tate and Mr. Rich- ard Davis, and piloted by student- president Dave Klipfel. 113 The cheerleaders, advised by Mrs. Patricia Mason, led the school through a triumphant football and basketball season. With Co-Captains Essie Schultz and Patti Smith this squad won the hall competition during Homecoming week- end. Oakettes, led by Co-Cap- tains Nancy Siekmann and Karen Weddle, repeated their success of past years by win- ning the Stebbins and St. Xav- ier invitationals. The girls were choreographed by Mrs. Mau- reen Curliss. They also marched in the St. Patrick's Day Parade, and at half-time of the East- West All-Star Basketball game. 4m... , on! .ia-alde.qu, M - v - $71? emw , : The Aquascots, under adviser Mrs. Kathy Kent and captain Lynn Han- num, continued to aid the Oak Hills swimmers. The purpose of the girls is to assist in the swim meets. They time, score, judge diving, and cheer. This year they sold key chains, Val- entine telegrams, and held bake sales to pay for future uniforms. Newest of our many squads formed to promote enthusiasm for the various athletic teams are the Batscots, who assist at all baseball games. Mrs. Carolyn Averill and Mrs. Linda Shulte are faculty advisers to the group, and Terry Martin and Kathy H011 stege were chosen from among the 30 girls to act as Co-Captains. The job of the Batscots is to keep records, score, take care of bats, chase fouls, keep the stop- watch, and cheer. They are also under the supervision of Coach Clark Eads. 117 Matscots, whose advisers ar Mrs. Nina Schreiber and Miss Maureen Mattis, worked at all the home wrest- ling meets, keeping score, operating the clocks, and running bake sales. They also sold tickets and formed an outstanding cheering squad. A poster sale helped to raise money to enable them to attend the State Wrestling Championships in Columbus. Newly-formed Spikescots ran the home track meets. Some girls timed, some measured and recorded for field events, and others kept score. Miss Joyce Sander and Mrs. Robert Yung acted as advisers for the group. At away track meets the girls took food and recorded split times for scouting reports. Maiorettes Oak Hills has always been proud of that group of girls who can throw batons high into the air and catch them on the way down. The 1972-73 squad of Majorettes was no excep- tion. Performing at all home foot- ball and basketball games in spark- ling style and snappy costumes took hours of practice. In addition the girls marched in a number of com- munity parades. Captain of the group was Debbie Freeze. 118 Any boy earning a varsity letter in an Oak Hills sport was eligible to join Varsity 0 Club. Coach Bob Yung, along with president Darrell Truitt, helped pro- mote the purpose of Var- sity O , which is to develop proper moral cona duct and good character among the athletes at Oak Hills. The 90-member club held the successful Big-Time Wrestling, at- tended a swords game, and as a service to athletics at OH, held ropes at basket- ball games, cleaned the parking lot, and officiated for the intramural pro- gram. Varsity.0 As a result of the extended day, the GAA program had to be changed. Juniors and seniors met completely separately from the sophomores. The number of sports offered was drastically cut. Miss June Merten was the adviser and Paula Regnold was president. Delegates to this conference were Nancy Te'rhar and Lynn Tauber, who felt it a very re- warding experience. 1 Fifty boys of all grades and abili- ties brought the world's most popular sport to Oak Hills. Unn der Coach Jim Wehrle and assis- tant coaches Len Weber and Jur- gen Bietenduval, the club played in a spring league, and will be- come an Oak Hills varsity sport in the fall of 1973. Elected as their co-captains were juniors Dave Ruehl and Fred Plennert, and the team faced such local talent as Groesbeck, St. Antoninu s, and Anderson. Dramatics 127 Two presidents, Kathy Leonard and Jamey Schleue, led Dramatics Club through a pro- fitable year, aided by adviser Mrs. lone Holt. The initiations and annual spring banquet were among the many highlights of the year. The group raised money through bake sales, patrons, ads, and tickets. Money went for CO stume s, makeup, scenery and other neces- sities for performances. Besides the four re- gularly-scheduled plays, the group did a cutting for the Thespian contest from Angel Street. As bu sy as these members were, they still found time to participate in speech con- tests and usher at various theatrical and musi- cal performances around the area. -r.1 Two vivacious new advisers, Mrs. Carolyn Averill and Mrs. Linda Schulte, led the Pep Club into new adventures - selling fun- bags, painting innumerable sports pep sign 5, and cancelling Pep buses which were never quite filled. 4 H A SKETCHES, Oak Hills' Literary Magazine, made its second annual appearance at the Spring 'N Things Art Festival this year. Under the advisorship of Mr. Steve Brinker, the editorial staff of Brad Sewell, Connie Johnu son, Pam Nagel, and Clara Smith, along with assistants and contributors, sifted through dozens of poems, short stories, and reviews to construct the magazine. Var- ious art students supplied sketches to accompany the prose and poetry. -avrtygnnx Caledon ian Under the filtering leader ship of nervous new adviser, Mrs. Virginia Chizer, and equally nervous new editor, Liz Bedard, the Caledonian managed to break into print - in spite of it all. A staff, small in num- ber but loaded with soul, ate their way through several dozen Whop- per 5, while spending long, lonely nights writing copy, cropping pic- tures, sealing envelopes, and tran- tically typing. Was it worth it? We hope so. Mr. Raymond Moulliet's ten-mem- bet Caledonian Business Staff or- ganized and conducted the candy, picture, and activity ticket sales to help finance the cost of the year- book. 130 The first issue of the school news- paper, The Tartan, announced that the staff had given the paper a face lift . This was done, according to editor-in-chief Amy Pound- stone's editorial, to end the belief that the paper was a Walt Disney production. The type of paper printed on was changed. The sports page was moved to the 4th page to give more continuity to the editorial and features' pages. Duncan and the Highlander were dropped. At the early convention of the Journalism Association of Ohio Schools in Columbus, first-page editor Sharon Iemker, third-page editor Bev Brass, and sports editor Pam Nagel won first-place trophies for on-the-spot reporting, while Dave Zinn and Rosie Bedard brought home second-place medals. -avPthmVQ 131 German Club once again held its highly successful Oktoberfest, claiming it the best ever. Led by president Greta Aller and adviser Mr. Charles Kowzan, the club also held a roller skating party and went carol- ing at Christmas. Latin Club, with president Ed Bascom and adviser Miss Regina Ried- matter, held bake sales and initiations for new members. The lobby window was once again decorated by the group. Spanish Club, with president Rosie Bedard and adviser Mr. Allen Smith, organized and decorated a Spanish room for Spring 'N Things. Monthly meetings were held and filmstrips of Spain were included in the entertainment. The outstanding meeting featured a Spanish dancer in native costume. French Club, led by president Sandy Zix and advised by Miss Carolyn Miller, held a Mardi Gras dinner which equalled the success of the German Oktoberfest. Proceeds from this affair helped to underwrite the co st of a dinner at a French restaurant. lubs 133 The primary purpose of the AFS Club is to raise money for AFS iAmerican Field Servicei and AA iAmericans A- broadi programs. This is done through Pledge Day and contributions. The or- ganization also seeks to help the foreign student become better acquainted with O. H. H. S. and Cincinnati. A Bridge of Friendship was built with bricks pur- chased through individual and group pledges, and was displayed in our show- case. Honor Societ Students with a high level of academic a 3:5 achievement composed the Oak Hills Honor Society for 1972-73. Mr. Kenneth Miller and Mr. Eugene Poynter directed the forty-member crew to a productive year of inter-school and inter-district tutoring. The proceeds from their tre- mendously successful Easter Egg sale afforded the club two $2.00 scholarships for graduating members. On April 10, twelve new National Honor Society initiates were inducted at the annual banquet ceremonies. St 136 137 Under the leadership of president Bill Haynes and adviser Mr. Richard Ernst, Student Council continued to become more community-consciou s. This was demonstrated by trips to Wesley Hall and Longview Hospital, and service projects which included tutoring pri- mary school children. Exchange days were held, and Council sponsored the Christmas Dance for a second year. The Spring Arts Festival, a success last year, was once again successfully or- ganized. Art Club Art Club is a loosely knit or- ganization, led by Oak Hills' three art teachers: Mr. Louis Koenig, Mr. Al Lutz, and Miss Pam Hayms. Their projects have benefited the school, es- pecially the decorations put up in the lobby at Christmas. Audio-Visual department, under the leadership of Mr. Bernard Hiles, expand- ed into the old counseling center. The small rooms previou sly used as offices were converted into a duplicating room, a filing room, and a workshop. Room 61 was remodeled and a counter was built. The closed circuit T.V. system was also increased from one channel to three channels. President Steve Hall changed the system of organization to increase efficienty. The photography division of A-V took pictures for the Tartan and Caledonian and for Dr. Clifton McMahon. Junior Roger Young Was director of photo- graphic services. 139 Forty Future Business Leaders at Oak Hills experienced a mo st successful year explor- ing different career opportunities in the Cincinnati area. Working with Mrs. Peter, adviser, and junior John Caudill, club president, the members initiated a teacher aid program which included typing ma- terials for teachers. Also included in the year's activities was a field trip to Proc- ter and Gamble, the Valentin-o-Gram drive in February, and bake sale. Affiliated with the National Future Busi- ness Leaders of America, several of the club's members attended the convention in Columbus. F BLA .aum 9m , . w... wwtlw M ! Under the direction of Mr. Dale Bernhard and President Joan Hallo- ran, the Future Teachers of America Club achieved a record membership of forty students. Bake sales, mo- vies, and operating the coat check at home basketball games provided sources of funds for a banquet held at the end of the year. Guest speak- ers, chapter parties, and planning for a college trip were included in the club's activities. COE, Cooperative Office Ed- ucation, was led by Mr. Robert Matte, adviser, and Carol John- son, president. Activities in- cluded guest speakers and con- ventions, The annual Employer Appreciation Banquet, held in May, was financed by bake sales, the Ton Wat sales cam- paign and monthly dues. Meet- ings were held monthly, every third Friday. DCT program is for senior boys, permitted them to attend school in the morning and report to job stations in the afternoon. The students carryz academic subjects necessary for graduation and spend 2 periods studying their chosen trades. DCT has been at OH for six years, averaging 40 to 5m retention in the selected trade and 30h: stay with their em- ployers for one or 2 years after graduation. 141 Hea 1th Careers Thirty-five Oak Hills students par- ticipated 1n Health Careers Club. The meetings were held monthly and were presided over by Mrs. Alice Roberts, adviser, and Jackie Eagen, president. The club presenta ed a different area of the medical field each month through guest speakers. Activities included volun- teer work in hospitals and day-care centers, with recognition pins award- ed to the volunteers. Funds were raised throughout the year to pre- sent a scholarship to' graduating seniors planning on a career in medicine. Youth Involvement Club was led by president Sandy Stephens and adviser Mr 5. Delores Gibbens. Mon- ey-raising projects included the sale of Entertainment '73 books. The money was used to fill disaster bags for the Red Cross, with whom the group is affiliated. Service pro- jects included working with mental- ly retarded children at Gamble-Nip- pert YMCA and visiting the Child- . -. K 0' ren's Convalescent Home and the ' w t t k, ' Hillenbrand Nursing Home. i X W i Red Cross 142 Chess Club meets every third Monday to challenge each other with their skills. Under advisor Mr. John Ogden and President Jim Hils, the or- ganization has extended this challenge in the form of tournaments with other schools. Twenty Highlanders this year as- sisted Mrs. Thompson and Mr. Baldwin in the confines of the school library. Card-filing, book- checking, book repair, and shelv- ing were just some of the duties that kept this squad busy during the heavy use of the library. The aids also enjoyed a Christmas party at Mrs. Thompson's home this winter. Library Aides 143 ? FAC ULTY C. L. McMahon, Donn Coates, Dana Clark, Sup't. Athl. Director Nurse Not pictured: D. From Rest and Sleep, which but thy picture be, Much pleasure, then from thee much more mu st flow; And soonest our best men with thee to go - Rest of their bones and souls' delivery! Thou'rt siave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men, And dost with poison, war, and sickness dwell; And poppy or charms can make us sleep as well And better than thy stroke. That there isn't is just another in a series of minor disasters and goof- ups which have plagued us throughout the year. So once again we will improvise with the best we have - a list of all the people who helped put this book together instead of a picture of them. Thanks to Mr. Hiles, AV dixector, and photographers Roger Young and Mark Payler; to Mr. Vorpe and Mr. Armstrong of American Yearbook; and to the staff of Executive Studio. A very special thank-you to Mr. Pat McKenrick of Executive for rolling up his sleeves and pitching in. Seems he worried about our book almost more than we did. Mr. Jack Luhrman, a teacher from Woodward High, also deserves a special mention here for giving us a hand when we needed it most. Even with all this help, we made mistakes, and the only excuse I can offer is that we were a practically all-new staff and didn't know too much about what we were doing. Most of us will be around next year to try again. Liz Bedard, '74 editoruin-chief A very special thanks to Mr. Ray Moulliet and his Caledonian business staff for a greatjob. 272
