Mascots 5 wa iz. if ' ' K CONNIE CRUTE ALTON DEAN TALLEY 15 The Good Old Doys In the fall of 1950, we entered Oak Hill High School as first graders with 34 pupils. Our class was divided into two rooms with Miss june Poole and Miss Nannie Lou Adcock as our teachers. Our other grammar grade teachers were Mrs. Emma Clark, Mrs. Marie K. Seate, Mrs. Katherine Royster, Mrs. J. H. Hart, Mrs. R. J. Elliott, Mrs. Fred Lamp, and Mr. S. V. Poole. When we were in the seventh grade, our class enjoyed a trip to the state's capitol. In 1958, we entered high school with 24 class members. Our homeroom teacher for the first two years was Miss Clelon McLau1-in fnow Mrs. Robert Danielj. Other teachers during our high school years were: Mrs. S. M. Watkins, Mrs. Mary T. Stovall, Mr. L. C. Adcocl-c, Miss Carol Winston, Mr. B. J. Neal, Mrs. Vera Puryear, Mr. jesse R. Butts, and Mrs. Arthur Ray Currin. In the s rin of our So homore ear the members of our class acted as sies P 9 P Y , QYP and clowns in the annual junior-Senior Banquet. During our junior year, we had quite a thrill when we got our class rings with black stones. We also gave a hilarious play entitled Grandad Goes Wild. We will never for- get Old Hooley. ln the spring we gave the seniors a very pretty banquet, Under the Magnolias. Now we are dignified seniors and have settled down to work in hopes of getting our diplomas and being prepared to make a way for ourselves in life. LOUISE TIMBERLAKE Historian As Time Goes By Last night I dreamed it was the year 1972 and I had just bought controlling interest in the Rexall Drug Company. l decided to travel around and see some of my holdings. My first stop was Stovall where I saw TOMMIE PITTARD. She is married to J. T-. who is the mayor of Stovall, now a considerably larger town than it was when we were at dear old Oak Hill High. Next I stopped in Clarksville to see ROY OVERTON who is married and working in the mill as an overseer. The mill is expanding rapidly since Roy has become an over- seer. The first two people I saw when I got to Virgilina were EDWARD NELSON and HAROLD YOUNG. Ed drives a 409 Chevy at the Person County Drag Strip. He had to build a new house to hold all his trophies. Harold is the Chief-of-Police at Virgilina, and he has really cleaned the town up! I drove on to South Boston where I saw HILDA TALLEY who is married now. Hilda was Miss America in 1965.1 went into Leggett's to see JOYCE MURRAY who is vice- president of the store. We always knew Joyce would make good. One of her beautiful daughters was her assistant. In Washington I stopped in to see LARRY ELLIOTT who is building electronic brains for moon satellites. As you know Larry was the brain of Oak Hill. He took me down the street to a restaurant. It belongs to BRUCE ADCOCK and his father-in-law. They are the owners of the Howard Johnson restaurant chain. While waiting for the food, I picked up a copy of The Saturday Evening Post. The cover was drawn by one of America's greatest artists, LOUISE TIMBERLAKE. Louise was once an artist for the award winning Acorn, The feature story in the Post was on DICKIE WILKINSON who .is the shortstop for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Dickie has just won the Most Valuable Player award for the fifth straight year. The next day I flew back to the Raleigh-DurhamAirport. In Raleigh I saw WALLACE MORONG who is teaching Agriculture at N. C. State-just what Mr. Butts told Wallace to do when Wallace was at Oak I-lill. I learned from Wallace that his good friend DIXIE OWEN is a colonel in the Army-no less! In Durham I went to Watts Hospital to have a cut on my hand dressed. Guess who my very efficient nurse was? None other than our own FRANCES I-IUMPHRIES! She ceased long ago to fear needles. As Frances was putting the bandage on my hand, she told me that CAROLINE BUMPASS was raising chickens for the Farmers Exchange and trying to catch a husband. Thinking about chickens made me hungry so I woke up and raided the refrigerator. It surely looks as if the class of '62 has a bright future ahead of it.
