JEWEL NELSON First Grade 5 FCEM Seniors, there's a dream in our hearts this clay For happiness in our lives as we go along our way. So let's salute each dream with a gladsome song To brighten our pathways as we go along. Many sunny hours are gone, far gone, all spent In the flurry and press of our high school years, In study, in thought, in mood, in wonderment, Blended happily together with laughter and tears. For the glory and glitter of our youthful past, For the things of life that will last. Seniors, look well to each little dream To guide our aspiration and worthy aim, For a dream is a potent and lovely thing In the heart of a slave or a king. Each dream to us may bring Some good and worthy thing: A thing hidden in some lowly place, Or blazing in its open grace. Such are our dreams, dear classmates, Dreams of tomorrow, ready for the mold, So with gentle fingers, let us hold And shape them in the true likeness Of a good life, and call it the way of happiness. Our class was divided into two homerooms, Miss June Poole te a ch in g one and Miss Nannie Lou Adcock the other. We had an enrollment of about forty students. During our eight years in grammar school we lost a few students, yet we gained a few. Our Freshman year in high school was one of the greatest of our lives. Our teachers were Mrs. S. M. Watkins, Mrs. Mary T. Stovall, Miss Clelon McLaurin, Mrs. Vera Puryear, Mr. B. J. Neal, and our principal-Mr. L. C. Adcock. Mrs. Vera Puryear was our homeroom teacher. In our second year in high school we were named Sophomores. We had an even wider field of interest than we had had in our first year. Mrs. Vera Puryear was once again our homeroom teacher. We elected our class officers and got to work. The next year our being Juniors gave us a great thrill. With the help of our able sponsor, Mrs. Stovall, we produced our play, For the Love of Pete. Danny Wilkinson and Charles Frazier, Jr., played the leading roles. We selected royal blue as the color of our class rings, and everyone was very happy when the rings came. In the spring we gave the Seniors a banquet, with Mardi Gras as our theme. At last we reached the twelfth and final year of school. Now we were the Dig nifie d Seniors ' of Oak Hill High School, twenty-seven strong and full of learning. We selected Esse quam videri for our motto, blue and white for our class colors, and the red rose for our class flower. Our president was Sherwood Clark. We presented a hilarious Senior play and the Juniors gave us a beautiful banquet in the spring. After graduation our days at Oak Hill will be at an end. We will be forever grateful to our teachers, to Mr. Adcock, our principal, and to our sponsor, Mrs. S. M. Watkins, for the help and guidance they have given us. THOMAS WATSON Historian 17 Defoils of the Future And now in 1971 as I gaze back over the past ten years, I marvel at the success and happ ine ss that clings to the Senior Class of 1961. I stopped at Boyd's Drugstore the other day and there was JUDY WILLIAMS. I hadn't seen her in 10 years. She is now hostess for the Pan American Airlines. Incidentally, Iam E. J. HART, salesman for Singer Sewing Machine Co. Since we both travel a lot we were able to trace most of the graduates of 1961. HUGI-IES BOYD, owner of the drugstore, gave us our lunch, which was odd because he is so stingy. As we chatted I learned that LINDA WILLIAMS is the manager of the Red Devil Football Te am. Her star player is Madison Currin. If you need a new dress just drop by to see VIRGINIA BUMPASS, who owns her own store, Jenny's Dress Shop. WINSOME RICE is a model on the Price is Right. FRANK VAUGHAN, JR. , has taken over Bill Cullen's position as Emcee. Look who's coming. It's FAYE BLACKWELL. She's joined the WAC's. And say, who is that handsome Army Officer? It looks like HAROLD YOUNG. JUDY MURRAY is taking it easy. She's now half owner of Leggett's Department Store. JOSEPHINE CHAIVLPION is on a cross-country tour with her basketball team defending its title, Non-Loses of '71. LINDA LAWS is dishwasher at the Old Maid's Horne. It seems that WOODROW ELLIXSON has taken Ed Sullivan's pla c e on T. V. His sponsor is Dentyne Chewing Gum. BOBBY RAY OWEN has really put his knowledge to work. The sign on the door reads: Lawyer, Bobby Ray Owen. BOBBY HARRIS and MATT ADCOCK own the largest farms in Gr a nville County. They're still building chicken houses. JAMES CULBRETH omms a service station. Iwonder if his conscience hurts when he sells gas at a higher price than his competitors. ROBERT FRAZIER operates a bulldozer for CHARLES FRAZIER, who bought Mr. Lew G1-egory's farms. LEO LOWERY keeps DANNY WII.KINSON's hot rods p olishe d. Danny drives them when he's not in the operating room at Duke Hospital. THOMAS WATSON owns the largest circus in the world. When he visits your tovxm you shouldn't fail to see TROY CAMPBELL, the shortest man in the world. SI-IERWOOD CLARK is a carpenter. I-Ie's married now and lives in a beautiful house whichtook him 8 years to build. FORREST PERKINS is married and works at the L S M Cigarette Factory. KENNETH WOODLIEF and GLENN WALL have opened a night school for students that don't pass English. 18 Defoifs of our Wil! We, the Senior Class of One Thousand Nine Hundred and Sixty-One, of Oak Hill High School, Granville County, of the State of North Carolina, having completed our pursuit of knowledge in school and wishing to distribute our various assets equally and accordingly, do hereby execute this last will and testament. And in this manner do we dispose of our possessions: ITEM I To our adviser, Mrs. S. M. Watkins, the Senior Class leaves its deepest appreciation for all she has done for us in our Senior year. ITEM II To the Faculty, the Senior Class b eque aths its love of fun and its ability to be wide awake and alert on Monday morning. ITEM III To the Juniors, the Senior Class bequeaths its Senior Dignity. ITEM IV To the Sophomores the Senior Class bequeaths its motto, To Be Rather Than to Seem. The upperclassmen have been friendlier, and the teachers have been harder. This year will always be highlighted in our memories with images of athletic events, special dances and hard work. Our interests have ledus on different paths, but we have all become acquain- ted with Julius Caesar and with the organs of the human body. The next two years will hold junior- Seniors, class offi c e rs, rings, plays, and, finally, graduation. With the completion of our sophomore year, we turn our thoughts Forward.
