As I was going through some old school relics, I found this diary containing an amusing history that revealed many class secrets. Dear Diary, September 1940-forty-three little, timid boys and girls are entering Oak Hill School for their first time. Mrs. Kate Burch is our teacher and she sings a lullaby to us daily as she tries to sing us to sleep. Dear Diary, In 1941, the same innocent children enter the second grade. Miss Persaline O'Brian is our teacher. We shall never forget her sweet caress, for whenever we are troubled or hurt by something she holds us in her arms and our tears turn into smiles. Dear Diary, September 1942, we join Miss Helen Morgan in the third grade. We havelout- grown some of our baby ways, however, her patient guidance is gratefully accepted by each of us. Dear Diary, September 1945, Miss Lessie Chandler is our teacher. Two new classmates join us this year, Edward Compton and Watkins Elliott. Our first class picnic takes place this year. Dear Diary, September 1944, we are entering into the fifth grade under the direction of our same faithful teacher of the previous year, one who loves us enough to have the desire to dedicate another year of her work with us, Miss Lessie Chandler. There are fifty-three of us. May 1945 was a difficult month for us due to changing teachers so much because of the illness of Miss Chandler. Dear Diary, September 1945, we enter the sixth grade with Mrs. Guy Whitehurst. Bobby Godsey and Sidney Clark join us this year. The big event this year is our class picnic which is to be held at Oxford Park in May. Dear Diary, September 1946, Mrs. Raymond Lowery is our teacher. We are going to visit Raleigh this year and see all the sights of our Capital City. Dear Diary, September 1947, brings us joy for this is our first year upstairs in the building. It makes us feel so grownup to be with those of our superiors. Mrs. Leslie Blackwell is our homeroom teacher this year, however, we are also under the direction of Mrs. Eugene Puryear, Mrs. S. M. Watkins, Mrs. A. R. Currin, Mr. Eugene Puryear and Mr. S. R. Murray. Nancy Overby received a hearty welcome when she came to join us this year for we had only eight girls with fourteen boys at the time of her arrival.
