L xi!! -. ' , 'Y 5,1 u fw OAK HILL SCHOOL THROUGH THE YEARS v . ' Oak Hill School, like many other schools throughout the stateb was built as a results of the spirit of school consolidation. At the beginning of this great change in the educational system there were six schools in this township, namely- the old Oak Hill, Royster, Poole,,Corn-- wall, Clark and Eakes schools. When the decision was made toe- nsolidate these schools, the question concerning the bee flocation for the school arose. It was finally decid- Eiethat the site would be in the center of Oak Hill Town- ship and that the school would take the name of the town- 'ship. A six room brick building was completed during the spring of 1924. The first members of the local school board were Messrs. John S. Watkins, G. T. Pittard, and W. F. Royster. Mr. Dawes served as principal during the first spring term. , Mr. John Farmer was principal the following year and teaching with him were hrs. W. P. Morrow, Miss Ester Chandlergsand Mrs. J. E. Bouldin in the grades,.and Misses Caroline Morrow and Marjorie Burton in the high school. The first graduates were Gladys Seat, Doris Garner, Hattie Jones,,Mabel,Smart, and Bluebelle Morningstar., In 1925 thejschbol building was enlarged to a fourteen room build- ing.Q A light plant, water system, convenient officeffor the principal and a school library were added. . - W.- C. Poe was elected principal the second year and Served four years., Under his leadership the school' grew in membership and was placed on the standard list of schools., Mr. Poe was followed by Mr. R. N. Grimes as prin oipal, -In 1930 a flag and flagpole was donated by No. 117, Ir. O. U. A. M., In the fall of 1931 school opened with ,Mr. F. M. Bailey, Jr., as principal. He remained as prin- i ff cipalfor seven years, Lunches for children were first served in the fall of 1934. During the summer of 1936, a modern teacherage was completed across the road fran V the school building. ' F -3,, Mr. G.,H.,Baker, Jr. became principal in the fall of 1958., A Home Economics Department was added in the fallof l959., The lunchroom was then moved from the school build- ing to the basement of the Home Economics building. At present there are thirteen teachers including the music department and six buses which are operated daily to give an opportunity for every child to attend school Through the interest of the local school board - Messrs.
