HUSKINS, Principal DEDICATION DALLAS COLUMBUS FLOWERS Dallas Columbus Flowers, affectionately and popularly known as Uncle Lum, was, atthe time of his death in 1941, Chairman of the Oak Hill School Board. For more thana quarter of acentury Uncle Lum was one of the Schoo1's staunchest friends and supporters. A generous bene- factor, he gave the School much in time, money, and land. These things, however, do not represent his greatest contribution, forit was his spirit of ser- vice and unfaltering faith in the potential of youth and his desire that every child should have an opportunity to secure an education that permeated and motivated the life of this school for many years. In these he was greatest. In humble recognition of his contribution to the educational life of this community and to Caldwell County, we dedicate to him this volume of The Oak Log. An easy-going, likeable person. ROSALYN BARLOWE MASCOTS DAVID STEELE -1 ' ' ' f 1 I ' a xi I., 1 4 , I' CLASS POEM The time for Seniors to go their separate ways is drawing nigh. Here comes a Senior now. Hey, you! Is there something in your eye? Something in my eye? Of course, came a soft reply. I'm a sophisticated Senior now. Do you think, I would cry? Cry indeed! Why should I cry? Do you think I care That I'm leaving my dear old school and those I love who're there? Should I care that I'm leaving all my playmates who have always meant the world to I me? I'll start my life anew. I'll forget each of those teachers who gave part of their life That each of us students may not be stumped by strife. I'll forget all those old memories, all the things I did To the time I leave my classmates, from the time I was a kid. I I may be facing a strange, new road, but my life isn't through. I'll meet new friends, I'll have new thrills, I'll find adventure, too! Then the Senior asked in a quivering voice, Now, do you think I care? When down deep inside he really knew that nothing could compare To all the joys he had received and all he'd tried to give. He knew he'd ne'er forget those days as long as he should live. But the Senior learned well this lesson ere he left: You may make others believe a lie, but you can't convince yourself. Gary Chester, Poet n CLASS MOTTO: Mighty oaks from little acorns grow. CLASS FLOWER: Red Rose CLASS COLORS: Baby Blue and White CLASS PROPHECY I, Agnes Haigler, was honored with the task of trying to write a class prophecy. Now be- lieve me that is some job, and if you knew these seniors like I do, you could easily understand why. Why, they're so unpredictable it wouldn't be safe to try to prophesy what they might be doing some ten years from now. It wouldn't even be logical to say what they will be doing a few days after we graduate. However, I think, maybe that last idea might be a little safer to undertake. Now these ideas are purely fictitious, as they are elements of my imagination, but it wouldn't surprise me to see some of these things happen. It's a known fact that Glenda Brady plans to join her husband as soon as possible. So the scene finds her flying to New York. qoh, by the way, in case anyone is wondering, she took a p1ane.J Franklin Reid is also an occupant of the same plane as he heads up north to play pro basketball with the Eskimos. A plane being much too tame for J. W. Smith and Roger Steele, they board a rocket ship - - - qdestination - - - Moonj with the excuse they have to take QButchj John Wayne Fox to the dentist. Now if you don't believe this, Butch can show you the tooth. In the meantime, a small party leaves from Dudley preparing to row across the Atlantic Ocean. The party consists of Gerald Miller and James Laney, who will do the rowing, while J. D. Bolick reads up on his road map to see that they don't get lost. With seven of our classmates out on wild excursions, fourteen remain somewhere out in this big wide world doing something, well, I suppose some of them are doing something. For instance there's Shirley Sams. Since graduation's over, she can spend all her time concentrating on how to get Fred to give her a diamond. And since Jeannie Gilliland is already married she can settle down and continue to go about raising her family. Boy, Ronald Brookshire and Jim Auron didn't waste any time getting into the army. They thought this would be a good way to get out of having to look for a job. Jack Reid isn't trying to get out of it, he's Uying to get in it, Qin the money, that isj. He's decided to become a millionaire. Now, how do you like that - - - right out of a clear blue sky, he decides to be a millionaire. fHe's starting by collecting dimes on the street corners.J This is one idea that appeals to Jimmy Richards, too. The idea of having lots of money, but he's trying to think of some way of getting it without working. Billy Holder and Benny Walsh aren't going to settle for anything as tame as making money. They're going with Clarence Miller on his sea shell collecting expedition, only they're not going after sea shells. They're going to catch a mermaid, or so they say. With all these boys leaving, Jerry White has to stay at home to keep the National Guard going. That takes care of all the boys, but two, well one really. Gary Chester is concentrating on manimony, so that doesn't leave him much time for anything else. As for Wally Ruff, he's quite tired after going through the motions of graduation so he decided to hibernate for the summer Now Barbara Hart is sitting quietly around waiting, waiting for what I don't know, but she's waiting. I can't figure out whether it's college or Bill she's waiting for. Now that concludes all our unpredictable seniors, all but Cornelia l-Iuskins, and she's so very unpredictable, I won't undertake to say what she might be doing, for that's a 64, 000 dollar question. Then of course there's ME. I won't say what I might be, because I don't know. So there. In witness whereof, we The Senior Class of 1956 do set seal on this, the twenty-fourth day of May in the year of our Lord, nineteen hundred and fifty-six. I. D. Bolick Lawyer CLASS HISTORY We the Senior Class of 1956, entered high school as lowly Freshmen in the fall of 1952. Two excited groups met on that memorable day in September. We old members of Oak Hill welcomed gladly the newcomers from Dudley Shoals. Together we started the climb toward the top. When the roll was called we found that we had a class of forty, fourteen girls and twenty-six boys. Guid- ing us faithfully through that first year were Mrs. Nelda Jones Dula and Mr. John Martin. Then came the day we inexperienced Freshmen advanced to the rating of gay young Soph- omores. Counting noses we found that we had a loss of six. Three had transferred to other schools and three had been visited by Cupid. But to our pleasure we had gained three. Glenn Burns, Al- fred McGuire, a transfer from Kings Creed and Wallace Ruff from Berryhill School in Charlotte. We now had a roll call of thirty-seven. We surely were proud of several members who had made the basketball team. Looking forward to being those know-it-all Juniors we finished out our Sophomore year under the wise leadership of Mrs. William Hood. After a short vacation we returned for our Junior year which was filled with happy events. A count of noses disclosed seven had taken different roads, but we rejoiced to find three new noses in our midst. Barbara Higgins, a transfer from Virginia, Tommy Watkins from Lenoir and Shirley Sams from Kings Creek. We must have been quite a headache to the teachers as we were more interested in the big social event, the Junior-Senior Banquet, than we were in our studies. We presented The Girl Next Door to raise money for the banquet. It was a success and that made us very proud of ourselves. Also in our Junior year we became quite proficient as money- makers. We all let out a sigh of relief when the plans for the banquet, Hawaiin Cruise were completed. The banquet was held at Carlheim Hotel, all bills paid. ln May we gathered around the ring salesman and ordered our rings. That surely was an exciting time. How proud we were over putting out the very last edition of the Echo. We somehow got through the Junior year with- out a fumble, thanks to the encouragement of Mrs. William Hood. No more historical events took place, and when the year ended, we were up-and-coming Seniors! We ran through the halls that day, September 2, to let the underclassmen know that the Seniors had arrived. We discovered that several members had dropped out or were attending other schools. Returning to finish her education was Jeanne Gilliland. To lead us in the Senior year were the class officers, Franklin Ried, Cornelia Huskins, Glenda Brady and Roger Steele. Under the guidance of Mrs. Ruth Harrill Middleton, we set out to reach our goal, at last. Now to be our tasks were the publication of The Oak Log and The Echo. The choosing of fS.uperlatives,a, selection of invitations, calling cards, and other graduation preparations kept us in an excited whirl When we realized we would soon be putting on our caps and gowns we became quite jittery. In our class we had two Basketball Captains, Agnes Haigler and Franklin Ried and the Football Captain Roger Steele. We were proud that our room was well represented in these sports. We look forward to the future not with regret but with a membrance of a school which gave us a much more secure life and one of the happiest four years we'll ever know. In saying our thanks we cannot but fail to express fully what you wonderful parents and the members of the faculty have meant to us We leave feeling that we can face whatever may befall us along life's way without stumbling.
