Teachers Are . . Theirs is the business of teaching. And inevitably, teaching is the business of talk¬ ing: talking to a first period class convinced that the hour should be a time of sleep, and not of learning: talking to a class in lab whose would-be scientists want to get on to looking through their microscopes, mixing up their chemicals, and writing their lab reports: talking to a business class in which the students are always threatening to get ahead of the instructor. And teaching is a matter of reading: reading almost incoher¬ ent senior term papers: and reading schol¬ arly works in hopes of keeping up with stu¬ dents ' ideas. Theirs is no easy business, but Without it, the school would have no mean¬ ing and no purpose. Men and women. .. A willingness to listen... 12
