BELLES MEMOIRES the story of the students of Oak Hill and their memories of 1967-68. Published by the Annual Staff Oak Hill High School Morganton, North Carolina PUBLIC LIBRARY Foreword Apart from the togetherness of the crowds in the cafeteria or at the grill, the masses of cheering fans at a ball game, the lines making their way to chapel, or the impersonal atmos¬ phere of the classrooms, we seek identity in the smaller group, fulfillment of personal goals, a niche for our individuality. We learn to stand alone. We select and reject. We move forward and sometimes backward. The broad path of the crowd is well-worn and comfortable while that of the individual is narrow and more difficult. The choice is ours and the difference is in the choice. 2 Introduction A simple sign points the way to Oak Hill Schools. 1100 students - individuals in taste, background, interest and aspira¬ tions - form the Oak Hill personality. When we browse thru this edition of Belles Memoires we shall retrace on memory’s way the friendships that were a part of our experience here and especially the journeys of learning that will chart our future course. Seniors Juniors Sophomores Freshmen Table of Contents Administration Faculty Athletics Activities Advertisers Autographs Junior High Elementary Favorites Organizations Dedicated to the Athletes We, the Class of 1968, dedicate this edition of Belles Memoires to the members and coaches of the Oak Hill High School athletic teams. Through th eir spirit and effort these teams are recorded in the annals of our school as one of the most outstanding groups in our history. The lessons learned on the athletic field will be carried over into adult life as good citizens. We are proud of you. Continue to express the motto “All The Way” for your goals in the game of life. “To love the game beyond the prize.” Teacher of the Year Mr. Jerry Wilkinson 6 ADMINISTRATION Mr. John L. Johnson Superintendent Burke County Board of Education Perry Abernethy, Chairman. Clyde S. Brinkley, Warlick P. Avery,. Donald E. Smith, John A. Bleynat Mr. William F. Brown, Jr. Principal To our helpful and understanding principal, Mr. William F. Brown, Jr., who has rendered every service possible to uphold the spirit of Oak Hill School; to one who has worked without ceasing, for our educational im¬ provement; to one who has encouraged us, and to one who has guided us in all our undertakings, faithfully and with fullest capacity. It is with humble pride that we say “thank you,” to a man who has given so much and asked for so little in return. School Song On a hill in fair Burke County Stands the school we love; Oak Hill High, renowned and glorious School of friendships, dear. In the years when we have left her We shall oft recall; Days were filled with fun and laughter Which we’ll never forget. Dear ole Oak Hill, we will ever To her name be true; In our hearts we ' ll always hold her And her teachings, too. 10 FACULTY Teachers Are . . Theirs is the business of teaching. And inevitably, teaching is the business of talk¬ ing: talking to a first period class convinced that the hour should be a time of sleep, and not of learning: talking to a class in lab whose would-be scientists want to get on to looking through their microscopes, mixing up their chemicals, and writing their lab reports: talking to a business class in which the students are always threatening to get ahead of the instructor. And teaching is a matter of reading: reading almost incoher¬ ent senior term papers: and reading schol¬ arly works in hopes of keeping up with stu¬ dents ' ideas. Theirs is no easy business, but Without it, the school would have no mean¬ ing and no purpose. Men and women. .. Cuthbertson Class Prophecy Yesterday, April 26, 1978, I, DERR LEONHARDT was sitting at my office desk at Union Carbide, when the desk secretary, EMILY WHISNANT, announced that Congress¬ man BILL CRUMP was here to see me about getting a donation for his campaign fund for re-election. He, as we talked, told me that he was sponsoring a progarm of schools, hospitals, and social work. His social workers, SANDY HOLDER, KENNETH ERVIN, and LINDA CARSWELL, were campaigning for him. Bill and I decided to tour his po¬ litical district before I gave him my doantion. We went first to the hospital where the head nurse REBA ORDERS, showed us around. She showed us her nursing staff of GERELINE HUNTER, BERNICE KINCAID, MARY CALDWELL, and LINDA BECK. We dropped in on the physical therapist MARGARET HENNESSEE while we were there. Nurse MAUREEN DANIELS was in the operating room working on a local secretary LINDA HURT so we couldn ' t talk to her. Lab technician LINDA HARRIS and her assistant JENNIFER CALDWELL were also on the case. LINDA HURT was having her tonsils out. Bill drove me next toward the beach front area of town. On the way we hit a fire- truck at an intersection. GARY ROBINSON was driving it. Patrolman CHARLIE CRUMP rushed up to give Gary a ticket. We took our car to a nearby body shop, ran by co¬ owners JIMMY CARSWELL, WADE CURTIS, and JACK BLANKENSHIP. They were in competion with PAUL MICHAUX ' S shop across the street. We stopped a cab driven by GARY HAYNES and finally made it down to the beach. The beach manager, JOE TOLBERT, showed us around. RONNIE WALL and SONNY ALLEN came surfing in as we were there. They said they were on vacation from drag racing their trash trucks. After lunch we went to the airbase. Bill’s old commanding officer, CLYDE LINGA- FELDT, showed us how his base benefited our country. With ace pilots like DOUG CARA¬ WAY and MARSHALL McCALL we were all bound to be safe.?? As we passed the air¬ strip we waved at aircraft draftsman LONNIE MOORE as he was walking with his private secretary, CAROLYN LOGAN. Bill suggested that we move on to his favorite project, a school for both beauticians and barbers. Head of the school VICKY TRUAX, showed us her large staff of instructors which included BARBARA MAYFIELD, CHARLENA HUNTER, BRENDA MOODY, NAPO- LEAN AVERY, ROBERT HUNTER and WOODROW ERVIN. Later, we headed back across town toward the high school. We ran into CHARLIE CRUMP again this time trying to catch two street racers, RONALD ALLMAN, and RALPH GRAGG. As we watched the chase we almost ran into a wall being built by bricklayers GARY AUSTIN and JERRY HUNTER. We finally arrived at school. We were a little early for a birthday party that the faculty had arranged for the head of the Biology Department, KATHY GANTT. While we waited for the festivities to begin Kathy showed us around the campus. The high school had attracted a great number of famous coaches and teachers. RALPH TAY¬ LOR was coaching basketball, ROGER BAKER was head of the football coaching staff. Roger had been at Green Bay under head coach, SONNY BRANCH. ELVIS VAUGHN was coaching baseball after four seasons with the New York Mets. Back in the main building, DIANE LEONHARDT, math teachei, and SUSAN AVERY, special education, were showing in the rest of the teachers: JOYCE HUNT, CONNIE CLONTZ, NOVELLA HARSHAW, BRENDA CORPENING, and SANDRA WARLICK. Visiting biologist CHARLENE CUTHBERTSON came in also. The room for the party was designed by engineers ROBERT ERVIN and BOBBY JOHNSON. It was furnished by interior decorator CATHY BRAUN. To touch it off, paintings by WILLIAM AVERY hung on each wall. The food was furn¬ ished by the local grademothers, LAURA CORPENING, CAROL REED, and HELEN JOR¬ DAN. School librarian AGNES DAVIS entered with the punch. Secretary VICKIE MIL¬ LER began pinning name cards on each guest. We had a wonderful time until I found a rock in my ice cream. It broke a tooth. We rushed down to the nearest dentist office. I was greeted by LORRAINE JOHNSON, the dental assistant. I had to wait while SHARON MILLER, a fashion designer, had a tooth pulled. My tooth was fixed without much trouble. With a numb mouth, I left the dentists office. On the street, preoccupied with my mouth, I accidentally bumped into CHARLES BARNES, now a semi-pro football player for the local team, who was talking to MARY AVERY, a local secretary. Exchanging greetings with them. Bill and I con¬ tinued back to the school. The party was just about over. We got there just in time to help clean up. Exhausted after a very long day, I sent Bill back to his house with the assurance that I was throughly impressed with the work he had done in our town and that I would send him a large contribution. Instead of going home, he went to solicit funds from four other big businessmen: WAYNE NORMAN, JOHN THRONEBURG, JAMES BURGE, and ANNA McGIMPSEY, I hope he was successful. I went straight home to soak my tooth. I ' m writing this today, April 27, 1978 because I want you to help me figure out how it was I could see all 80 graduates of Oak Hill High School, class of ' 68 in one day. Personally, I don ' t think it ' s possible.
