BURKE COUNTY PUBLIC LiBRARY e Ies JKk emoires EDITED BY ' U£e cS enior Gfa ass OF 1967 VOLUME XV BURKE COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY I It is our sincere wish that the 1967 Belles Memoires will serve as a treasure chest of pleasant memories to each of you. This edition has been hard to produce; but it has been worth all the hard work, just knowing of the purpose it will serve in years to come. We wish to express our appreciation to each and everyone who aided us when we needed help. Jimmy Benton Editor Linda Harris Business Manager 2 sr Gon en s Administration Faculty Seniors Juniors Sophomores Freshmen Junior High Elementary Favorites Organizations Athletics Activities Advertisers 3 This volume of Belles Memoires is dedicated to one who has been with us since we were freshmen - one who has guided us, joked with us, and, most important, taught us the fundamentals of mathematics and science. We shall never forget all those “hairy” problems, the “million-dollar courses” he taught, and the familiar comment, “You guys are chicken!” And who could forget his sharpshooting with chalk, the waste basket acting as target? We, the Senior Class of 1967, dedicate this annual to “our teacher,” Mr. Fred E. Acuff. 4 That ' s the way it is, folks! Master of the Trade! ? ? ? Forget it! I ' ve got the message! It was right here a minute ago! 5 We, as Seniors, have chosen to honor this teacher by electing her our Teacher of the Year. Her patience and understanding of teen-age problems are just two of her many outstanding qualities. Her every act reflects her eagerness for the Oak Hill students to advance socially as well as mentally. Miss Sarah A. We wandered around in small groups chattering excitedly while hunting for our homerooms. We were fortunate to have as our brave advisers Mr. Fred Acuff, Mr. Joe E. Roper, Mr. James Hig- gins, and Miss Carolyn Allen. Our homeroom officers were as follows; Mr. A cuff ' s Homeroom; President - Nancy Jo Masters, Vice-President - Linda Bryant, Secretary - Sue Moore, Treas- urer - Ronald Teseneer, Reporter - Carolyn Harris; Mr. Roper ' s Homeroom; President - Janet Whisnant, Vice-President - Shelia Grady, Secretary -Reporter - Jane Lane, Treasurer - Jean Nichols; Mr. Higgins Homeroom; President - Randy Miller, Vice-President - Steve Shuffler, Secretary - Gary Curtis, Treasurer - Judy Clark, Reporter - Linda Harris, Chaplain - Ninette Propst; Miss Allen ' s Homeroom; President - Dean Keller, Vice-President - Nancy Throneburg, Secretary - Johnny Parker, Treasurer - Patsy Miller. There were seven of our classmates out for football; Jack Leigh, Steve Shuffler, Levi Powell, Randy Miller, Roger Barrier, Bobby Mc- Neely, and Tim Robinson. Seventeen girls and boys tried out for basketball; Kenneth Throne- burg, Ernie Hensly, Jack Leigh, Mickie Hendrix, Steve Shuffler, Ronald Teseneer, Janice Hut- chins, Sue Moore, Mary Kincaid, Linda Harris, Shelia Grady, Carolyn Harris, Margie Webb, Patsy Miller, Judy Collins, Judy Clark, and Diane Burnette. Getting adjusted to high school life was fun - after ridding ourselves of the fear of being late to class. The health award and Home Economics award went to Janet Whisnant. Then we were sophomores. Our advisers were Mrs. Rachel Lyons, Mrs. Dawn Poore, and Mr. Max Harris. Officers were; Mrs. Lyons Homeroom; President - Wayne Woods, Vice-Presi- dent - Brenda Crisp, Secretary - Ninette Propst, Treasurer - Brenda Chester, Reporter - Kaye Chapman, Chaplain - Diana Burnette; Mrs. Poore ' s Homeroom; President - Debbie Poovey, Secretary - Amelia Powell, Treasurer - Janice Hutchins; Reporter - Elaine McCall, Chaplain - Mary Kincaid; Mr. Harris ' Homeroom; President - Jimmy Benton, Vice-President - Janet Whis- nant, Secretary - Shelia Grady, Treasurer - Steve Shuffler, Reporter - Linda Beane. Nine of us were invited to join the Beta Club; Wilma Brown, Ninette Propst, Janet Whis- nant, Kaye Chapman, Jane Lane, Juanita Edney, Ronald Teseneer, David Hendrix, and Jimmy Benton. The Monogram Club gained five members from our class; Jack Leigh, Tim Robinson, Kaye Chapman, Ninette Propst, and Nancy Throneburg. The Home Economics Crisco Award went to Janet Whisnant, and the Biology award went to Wilma Brown. At last we became upperclassmen - Juniors under the supervision of Mrs. Eleanor Lindsay, Mrs. Dawn Poore, and Mr. Max Harris. Homeroom officers were; Mrs. Lindsay ' s Hoomeroom; President - Walter Johnson, Vice-President Shelia Grady, Secretary - Wilma Brown, Treasurer - Nancy Masters, Chaplain - Patsy Miller; Mrs. Poore ' s Homeroom; President - Janet Whisnant, Vice-President - Debbie Poovey, Secretary - Jimmy Benton, Treasurer - John Roane; Mr. Har- ris ' Homeroom: President - Roger Barrier, Vice-President - Nancy Throneburg, Secretary - Sharon Barry, Treasurer - Janice Hutchins. Junior Class Officers were: Jimmy Benton, Presi- dent; David Lingafelt, Vice-President; Janet Whisnant, Secretary; and Linda Harris, Treasurer. Six more members of our class were invited to join the Beta Club: Sharon Barry, Carolyn Kincaid, David Lingafelt, Annabelle Kincaid, Flossie Ervin, and Linda K. Harbison. The Monogram Club boasted several new members from our ranks: Janet Whisnant, Shelia Grady, Mary Kincaid, Walter Johnson, Jimmy Johnson, and Charles Kincaid. With our rise in status came new responsibilities, one of which was financing the Junior- Senior Banquet. The results of our magazine sale were very good. The theme of the Junior- Senior was Paris by Night . Thirteen students were tapped into membership in the French Club: Ronald Teseneer, Janice Hutchins, Randy Miller, Ninette Propst, Janet Whisnant, David Lingafelt, Wilma Brown, Annabelle Kincaid, Carolyn Kincaid, Juanita Edney, Linda Harris, Amelia Powell, and Jane Lane. Another big day was ordering our class rings. Janet Whisnant was selected Miss-Hi-Miss, and everyone was proud when Juanita Edney re- ceived an invitation to attend the Governor ' s School in Winston-Salem during the summer. For the Commencement Exercises, eight people were fortunate enough to be chosen as marshals: Wilma Brown, Jimmy Benton, Janet Whisnant, Jane Lane, Juanita Edney, Annabelle Kincaid, Ronald Teseneer, and Ninette Propst. Sharon Barry received an award in U.S. History. On a late August morning, 1966, the members of the Class of 1967 ascended now familiar steps with mixed feelings about beginning their last year at Oak Hill High School. Our advisers were Mrs. Genevieve Broome and Mr. Wright Pearson. Class officers were David Lingafelt, President; Amelia Powell, Vice-President; Janet Whis- nant, Secretary; and Wilma Brown, Treasurer. Jack Leigh was chosen a tri-captain of the football team and captain of the boys ' basket- ball team. At last came the day the rings arrived. The Seniors were easily spotted in a crowd; they were the ones with the outstretched right hands! The year moved to a close quickly - Senior plays, Junior-Senior, Class Day, and those all-important final exams. But almost before we knew it, we were reaching out for our diplomas - reaching out to grasp the future - hopefully. HISTORIAN: Ninette Propst C ass CProphecy We, DEBBIE POOVEY and MILLIE POWELL are alone today in our little fortunetelling shop in Miami Beach, Florida. Looking at our calendar, we see that it is June 1, 1977. Heavens! Can it be possible? Only ten years ago we were accepting that long-coveted high school diplo- ma. Oh, well, no wonder we feel so melancholy and homesick. Thank goodness, here comes a customer. Of all people, and old classmate, ELAINE McCALL. Are you feeling a little hpmesick for Oak Hill School, Elaine? Let us look into our crystal ball and maybe we can make contact with some of the others who were in our class. By the way, Elaine, we see you are now Mrs. Bridges and the mother of three little girls. As we gaze into our crystal ball we see a long corridor which we believe to be a hospital. Another glance and we see a lady in white whom we recognize as MARTHA DIETZ. SUE MOORE is in charge of medical records and ANNABELLE KINCAID is employed as Laboratory Technician. NANCY CORPENING is doing an efficient job as head dietitian. Coming into focus now we see two of out former classmates who have distinguished them- selves as famous doctors, JIMMY JOHNSON and CARL DUCKWORTH. Dr. Duckworth is a bone specialist and at the present is administering to the needs of injured race car driver, DENNIS ALLMAN. RANDY WHISNANT and EDDIE HEAVNER had more luck in the recent race. The hospital slowly fades and the American Steel Industry located in Chicago now comes into view. RANDY MILLER is manager of the company and is seen interviewing GAIL KINCAID and JUDY CLARK for positions there. The office is kept running by three secretaries - LINDA HARBISON, BEVERLY COLLETTE, and MARGARET HALLYBURTON. The financial records are kept by pub- lic accountant JAMES BENTON. We leave this thriving business now but not before we recog- nize ERNEST RUTHERFORD and DELORES AVERY as workers there. With misty eyes we recognize once again our dear ole Alma Mater. It seems that many of our former classmates have returned to the old familiar grounds to serve. Sitting behind the principal ' s desk is none other than DAVID HENDRIX. KAY CHAPMAN is teaching the third grade, SHARON BARRY is head of the Math Department, and RONALD TESENEER is the science professor. MARLON WINTERS is the basketball coach and WALTER JOHNSON is coaching foot- ball. It is from these friends that we learn of other class members who have gone abroad. LINDA HARRIS has begun her teaching career in France and she sometimes visits ALEX COBB who is one of the racers in the Grand Prix. WARREN CONLEY can be seen there also serving as mechanic to the race cars. MARY SUDDRETH is teaching Home Economics in China and is enjoying it very much. CAROLYN HARRIS is making the Paris scene with her original designs. Traveling as her chief model is FAYE WHISNANT. NINETTE PROPST is studying interior de- sign in Florence Italy. She just might run into ERNIE HENSLEY who is there now on another mission as secret agent. MARY KINCAID is traveling to Moscow as a business correspondent for the United Nations, and her pilot is none other than JOHNNY PARKER. On the plane she sees KELLY CORPENING who is traveling as a buyer for Stag Shop on Fifth Avenue, New York. Our crystal ball is bringing into view a familiar face. Let ' s look further to see who it is. 52 Gfass CProphecy Gon . JANET WHISNANT is teaching Home Economics in Miami Beach, where coincidentally DAVID LINGAFELT is television announcer for a station there. Our minds wander back to Oak Hill and we can visualize other images. We find these to be those classmates who are still employed in the city of Morganton. MARIAN AVERY is work- ing for the Burke County Board of Education. THOMAS BROWN and DARRYL KLUTZ are co- managers of Burke Yarns. TIM ROBINSON and MICHAEL ALLMAN are co-owners of an Esso service station. But we see they are getting some competition from the efficient service given at STEVE SHUFFLER ' S Texaco station. FOY McNEELY, JOHNNY BELTON and DEAN KELLER are holding their own at Morganton Dye and Finishing. Right in the heart of downtown Morgan- ton, is McCall ' s Honda Shop, owned and operated by WAYNE McCALL. Morganton Hardware is now owned by BRATHEL POARCH. For recreation and fun everyone is gathering at the Go- Go Club owned by ROGER BARRIER and managed by LARRY PATTON. LINDA BRYANT and JUDY COLLINS are working as go-go dancers. The large flashing sign at the Chevrolet car lot comes into view and informs us that RAY GRAGG and BRUCE CRUMP are the owners. JEFFREY GANTT is making a profitable living as the local taxidermist. All of these people who serve the Burke County area are well protected by the competent sheriff, MICKEY HENDRIX, and his staff. Our crystal ball now focus ' s on the faces of MARGIE ERVIN, FLOSSIE ERVIN, HATTIE PERKINS, and BETTY PERKINS. They are off again on a tour to sing in various night clubs around the country. WILMA BROWN, JANE LANE, and JUANITA EDNEY are governmental correspondents to France. A most beautiful scene comes before our eyes and we can hardly be- lieve seeing the clear blue water, the swaying palm trees, and the motion of the hula girls. Taking all of this in are those two lucky playboys, JACK LEIGH and KENNETH THRONEBURG. While they vacation in Hawaii, their assistants take over their jobs back home. JANICE HUT- CHINS is coaching the Green Bay Packers with much success, and GARY CURTIS is managing Kenneth ' s thriving Cue and Cushion. We wish we were there to enjoy a meal at the Hawaiian restaurant co-owned by JEAN NICHOLS and PAULA MILLER. Another glance reveals that mili- tary service has claimed some of our classmates. BETTY GARDIN is now a member of the Air, Force. LEVI POWELL and JERRY McCALL have both made a career of the Navy. Our view is getting dim as we glance for a last time to see CAROLYN KINCAID as a famous seamstress, CHARLES KINCAID a famous basketball player, LINDA BEANE a happily married private secre- tary, SHELIA CARLISLE still managing her home and now floor manager of Southern Devices, PATSY MILLER living with her husband on an Army base, GLADYS STILLWELL happily keeping her home and family running, and CAROL FRANKLIN who is content with her family of seven. That was the last of our images and our crystal ball grows dark. As we close up shop we agree that it has been fun to reminisce and that we should do it more often. We bid good-by to a satisfied customer and all has settled down to wait for another tomorrow.
