Senior Class Poem A BEGINNING The first. year is a beginning, New and frightening, for I am the humble novice. School is overwhelming, tremendous. It is a challenge, a mountain. A mountain so high that I cannot see the top from where we stand; And it will take twelve long years to climb iy, School is serious: It is teachers, lectures, study, worry. Thinking, writing, books, rules, - - - frus- tration. I am a cauldron of boiling emotions - Dreams, hope, anticipation, Satisfaction for the moment, Apprehension, disappointment, Exhaustion, disgust, Time is a slave driver! More classes! More homework! More themes! No dreams. a? +b2=c2 Who but the teachers and Greek Philosophers care! School is conflict, contradiction, Crowded halls, old tradition, Yearbooks coming, football and basketball games. Lab explosions and senior proms. But learning is breath-taking, exciting; Full of fact, reason, ideas. I urgently try to grasp all of it, Compensate for lost hours. And learning has its loneliness. Yes, there are friends, But only one we can depend on - - - just one. And s ometimes school is - - - Baccalaureate, Graduation, Being deft behind, That's the sad part. This is the environment of education, Developing a fierce pride for it, Coming to own a love for it, Ihave become a part of it - - - it of me We're the Senior class of '65. Just this one more year, and then what? Is that the end? The end of a certain happiness. The climax of a small achievement. I am soon to leave it all behind. But time pushes me on to another beginning And this beginning is the Future! Last Will and Testament We, the Senior Class of 1965, residing in Morganton, the County of Burke, and the State of North Carolina, realizing that we are about to leave dear Oak Hill High, wish to leave this, our last Will and Testament, to our fellow classmates, teachers, and friends. ARTICLE 1 To our teachers and principal, we wish to leave our thanks and appreciation for their in- terest, effort, and patience given us throughout our school years. ARTICLE II To the Junior Class we leave the following things which have made us both happy and sad; (1) The same old desks, books, chalk, erasers, and pencil sharpeners, which they will be using next year; (2) The honor of sitting on the first rows in chapel; (3) The wonderful privilege of eating lunch first; (4) But most of all, we leave the hope that your Senior Year at Oak Hill High will be as meaningful and as full of fun as ours has been. ARTICLE IIf1 To the Sophomores we leave the title of Juniors and the responsibility of raising money for the Junior-Senior Prom. ARTICLE IV To the Freshmen we leave the assurance that you will one day be Seniors, and the hope that you will make the most of the next three years, for they can be the very best of your life. Witnesses: Sally Chinch, Testators; Ellen Taylor and Clyde Scode, Linda Orders Katrinia Krudd, Class History With our graduation close at hand we the class of 1965 look back at our achievements and fond memories which have been indelibly etched in our minds. We will always remember the September morning of 1961 when we first made our appearance in high school as Freshmen. After nearly a month of stumbling around and going into wrong classes we eventually became accustomed to high school life. Our advisors were Mr. Boyd Bar- tier, Mr. Gary Hammond, and Mr. Bill Mull. The class officers were as follows: Mr. Barrier's homeroom: President - Wayne Harris, Vice President - J. D. Whisnant, Secretary - Jerry Mil- ler, Treasurer - Randall Paschall, Reporter - Douglas Carswell; Mr. Hammond's homeroom; President - Margaret Beck, Vice President - Gail Buchanan, Secretary - Wanda Lingafelt, Treasurer - Gary Cobb, Reporter - Jane Saulmon; Mr. Mull's homeroom: President - Joey Cars- well, Vice President - Ann Avery, Secretary - Gary Barrier, Treasurer - Ellen Taylor, and Re- porter - Warren Benfield. We being freshmen did not expect much recognition, but some of us did get honors. Naturally, we were in the center of attraction during our initiations of our vari- ous clubs. At graduation three of us received medals: Sharon Benfield a recitation medal, Rod- ney Kral a health medal, and Benny Brandon a declamation medal. Our Sophomore year of 1962 found us somewhat wiser and somewhat surer. Our advisors this year were Mrs. Antoinette Moore, Mr. Boyd Barrier, and Mr. Fred Acuff. Our officers this year were as follows: President - Ann Avery, Vice President - Wanda Lingafelt, Secretary - Barbara Parker, Reporter - Rosie VanAtta; Mr. Barrier's homeroom: President - Gary Cobb, Vice President - Linda Orders, Secretary - Sylvia Leigh, Treasurer - Jerry Turbyfill, Reporter - Douglas Carswell; Mr. Acuff's homeroom: President - Margaret Beck, Vice President - Ellen Taylor, Secretary - Jane Saulmon, Treasurer - Betty Miller, and Reporter - Brenda Hamrick. This year the Beta Club increased its membership by taking in nine of our classmates. They were Wanda Lingafelt, Sharon Benfield, Barbara Parker, Ann Avery, Sylvia Leigh, Linda Orders, Ellen Taylor, Jane Saulmon, and Jerry Miller. This year some of us received some honors. Rosie Van Atta and Benny Brandon won recitation and declamation contests. Wanda Lingafelt won a Crisco award and Scotty Wall won a track medal. Our Junior year began in 1963 with the excitement of planning and raising money for the Junior-Senior Prom. Our theme was “Tropical Island . Another important event of this year was the ordering of our class rings. The Junior-Senior Trip to Washington and New York will always be remembered. Our Junior advisors were Mrs. Betty Wagoner and Mr. Edward Barrier. Class officers were as follows: Mrs. Wagoner'’s homeroom: President - Wanda Lingafelt, Vice President - Gary Cobb, Secretary - Rosie VanAtta, Reporter - Joey Carswell, Treasurer Jerry Miller; Mr. Barrier's homeroom: President - Barbara Parker, Vice President - Scotty Wall, Sec- retary - Rita Holder, Treasurer - Brenda Hamrick, and Reporter - Gloria Crump. The students who had the honor of being marshals were Wanda Lingafelt (chief), Sharon Benfield, Ann Avery, Sylvia Leigh, Ellen Taylor, Linda Orders, and Jane Saulmon. Also this year Rosie VanAtta was chosen Junior Miss Hi Miss and six of us received medals: Wanda Lingafelt in history and French, Rosie VanAtta in recitation, Connie Allison in typing, Scotty Wall in track, Joey Carswell in agriculture, and Bill Braun in track. Finally in 1964 the long-awaited year arrived. We then became dignified Seniors. At long last, we received our class rings. Our Senior officers were as follows: President - Gary Cobb, Vice President - Wanda Lingafelt, Secretary - Jerry Miller, Treasurer - Ellen Taylor, and Reporter - J. D. Whisnant. The Junior-Senior Prom was an event we shall always remem- ber. Also this year Rosie VanAtta was crowned Homecoming Queen and Ellen Taylor was chosen Maid of Honor. Three boys were chosen for All Conference Football: Gary Cobb, Jimmy Flem- ing, and David Patton. This history will end when we receive our diplomas, but each individual will write his own future history through his achievements. The Moonbeam leaves in five minutes. COME ON! When we board our ship, we are greeted by our old school mate, MARGARET BECK, who will be our stewardess for the trip. We take our seats and are given instructions by the pilot, JIMMY DANIELS, Now we are all settled and on our way. Our first stop is Mercury, Off the ship and into a bus, chauffeured by HURLEY BELTON, we begin the first segment of our tour. Our guide, DAVID DRAUGHON, tells us that the case of Heartless Hatchet , alias GARY BARRIER, is underway. He says that his lawyer, DOUGLAS CARSWELL, is very much perturbed about the attitude of JUDGE J. D. WHISNANT, We would like to stay but things are really getting heated here. The tour takes us next to Venus. We arrive too late to see the crowning of Miss Venus, ROSEMARY VAN ATTA, but the director of the pageant, JERRY MILLER, gives us full details of it. Here on Venus life is very luxurious due to the excellent governing of RANDALL PAS- CHALL. New legislation has just been passed to prohibit work on the planet, thanks to the per- suasive talk given by SENATOR DAVID PATTON, MIKE BRITTAIN, WILLIAM PITTS, and LLOYD PUETT find it difficult to obey the new law because it would mean the loss of their vast farms, whereas engineers TOMMY CONLEY and THOMAS SHUPING are pleased. Next stop is Mars where everyone enjoys the prosperous candy industry made possible by the unique combination of Moore and Clontz. PAT and LIBBY are known universally for their Marsian Taffy. Downtown at the newly built clinic, LINDA ORDERS, head nurse, tells us that ANN AVERY, NORMA HORTON, and SHARON BENFIELD are proressors at the Uniplanatary Technical Institution where the principal, PAUL BURGE, is experimenting with automatic dis- ciplinary devices. We now come to Jupiter, which is known as the Paris in Space . In BARBARA PARKER'S Fashion Salon, we find BRENDA HAMRICK, GLORIA CRUMP, and GAIL BUCHANAN modeling the latest fashions. Also located here is the famous Shoppe de Beautie of FRANCES WHISNANT and JO ANN OLLIS, While driving, we see beachcombers JERRY NORMAN and SCOTTY WALL taking it easy on one of Jupiter's many beaches. On the side, Scotty and Jerry run a Rent-a- Surfboard stand. MIKE BRITTAIN and BILL BRAUN have made it easier for the surfer with their new invention Permanent Wave . On Saturn, which is famous for its diamond rings, we learn that ROY LOWDERMILK is doing nicely financially with his job of cutting diamonds. This expensive business requires twenty- four hour protection provided by SBI men WARREN BENFIELD and JERRY LEWIS, The news of the planets is gathered on Saturn by reporters CARROLL HALLYBURTON and JACK MATHES in order to print the “Universal Informer . Editor LINDA MULL has great confidence that the paper will soon reach the mark of two billion readers. Now we come to Uranus, Just recently, Physicist BENNY BRANDON has discovered a large uranium deposit, U711, with the aid of his competent assistant, WANDA LINGAFELT, Uranus is the center of production of the galaxy. All space cars are created here by BUDDY BECK. LINDA HOUSTON is noted for her fashionably designed homes and ANN BENFIELD invents and produces all the household products. These products are distributed by Taylor and Wall Mail Order Company. ELLEN and MARY have proven to be a very efficient team. As we near the next stop, we are very attentive because Neptune is the most vital planet of all. It is responsible for the protection of the planets. Here is located the United Planets Build- ing where representatives from every planet meet to discuss the many problems of defense. Out- side the building, we have a chat with Representative RUSSELL KINCAID, who represents Earth. Russell explains that JOEY CARSWELL and GARY COBB lead the fighter fleets in their finger tip control space ship. These ships were perfected by head mechanic, EVA SUE BURNETTE, Our next visit is the animal sanctuary of the Universe, Pluto. This sanctuary was made pos- sible by NORA CARAWAY, president of the Humane Society, and BARBARA PENNELL, vice- president. The finest of dog kennels are found here run by RODNEY KRAL. Scientist JUDY DYSON'S newest creation is the Gonnatweet , which is a cross between a giraffe and a canary. Its name was taken from the sound it makes. NORMA MILLER and JUDY ORDERS keep Pluto supplied with the necessities for the care of all these animals through their Pet Supply Shop. The finale of our tour is a short visit to our old home, Earth. Due to the migration to o ther planets, Earth remains much the same. The wild teenagers of the 60's have made Earth an ex- ample of family unity. SAM BUCKNER, head of the Greyhound Bus Lines, is supporting a wife and three children. BETTY FEMISTER, ELAINE PROPST, and RITA ROSTAN enjoy their weekly gatherings at the laundramat. JIM FLEMING and his wife are operating a trailer park for newly weds, GARFIELD CHESTER is a member of the Burke County Board of Education. He is playing an important part in preventing school dropouts. It has been great visiting our old friends. We wish we could have them all together once again, but, as you see, time has scattered them near and far. We also have our own résponsi- bilities and must return to our home on the Moon. I am sure the work has really piled up in our cheesebox houses since we have been away, don't you, Sylvia? oo a s a De as Ue BE UD Ue oo Christine Allman Loraine Allman Jack Annis Robert Bailey Kendall Barrier Doris Beck Jane Brandon Roy Brittain Rama Lee Browning Karen Burleson Tommy Canipe Laverne Cannon Dianne Chester Reba Clontz Alice Coleman Randy Cook Kathy Daniels Pam Dula Sharon Fox Carolyn Franklin Kenneth Hall Linda Harbison Dixie Harris Janet Hurt Bill Keller Gwynn Keller Rebecca Keller Ray Lail Lois Leonhardt Sue Lequire Barbara Lewis Bill Lowdermilk JoAnn Lowdermilk Dallas McCall Joyce McCall Norma McLean Billy Miller Zona Mull James Noles Judy Orders Barbara Pennell Ronald Perry Jim Piercy Larry Putham Jerry Reed ae Leona Self Becky Shuping Jill Sisk Clifford Smith Ruby Smith Earl Stamey Jerry Stamey Mary Sue Stamey Judy Stephens Patsy Stewart Mary St. John Johnny Sutton Lane Throneburg Linda Truax Judy Vance Jim Wacaster Deanna Warren Brenda Whisnant Daniel Whisnant Jeanette Whisnant Linda Whisnant Ronnie Whisnant Charla Young fom The Juniors sure worked hard for the Seniors - WE ARE PROUD OF YOU.
