The 1966 SyseHles Mlemotres Published by fhe ‘Annual Ofaff Oak Still Stigh School TH organton, North Carolina Let’s Peek Into a Fast of Memorres Jourleenth SHAY COUNTY UBLIC LIBRARY wy, Ore word The publication of this yearbook has been a challenge to all of us. And now that we present this edition of ‘‘BELLES MEMOIRES”’ we are proud of what this work has meant to us. It has required the co-operation of our sponsor, students, staff, and those who have contributed their support through advertisements. We wish to thank you who have helped us. The challenges of higher learning, adventure, and new worlds to conquer lie immediately before the members of the Senior Class, May we meet these chal- lenges with courage, faith, and steadfastness of purpose. ty Casa Cob Franbte Kathryn Daniels Carolyn Franklin Editor Business Manager Annual Otaff Our work done, we sit back and await the day when the Belles Memoires will emerge from the press. Collecting pictures, pecking on typewriters, and preparing material for the publishers was no easy task, but we finally completed our job. When you saw us dashing about the building, shaking our heads and frowning over a set of figures, we were wondering if and how we could raise the money for this volume of Belles Mem- oires. Thank you for your support. Advisor: MRS. G. Someday we'll think about our past, The seventy-seven students in our class We'll remember our happiness and joy, With each girl and each boy. The many friends from which we part, We leave them with a heavy heart, Our departure, we hope, will cause everyone, To remember only the good things we have done. 42 We look to our future as a mountain top: Our graduation as just a stop: Where we rest to gather strength, For our adventurous journey of great length, With tears m our eyes we must leave This grand old school, but we believe, — That we'll always remember Oak Hill High And the fun we had in days gone by. TESTATORS Judy Stephens Rama Browning Class Stistory It was four years ago on a bright sunny September morning in 1962, that we started on the great adventure of entering high school life. We all re- member clearly our feelings of awe, ex- pectation and anticipation as we began our high school careers under the gui- dance of Mrs. Broome, Mr. Roper and Mr. Gibbs. The class officers were as follows; Mrs. Broome's Homeroom - President: Roy Brittain, Vice- President: Linda Kay Whisnant, Secretary: Jack Annis, Treasurer: Jill Sisk, Reporter: Brenda Whisnant. Mr. Gibbs Home- room - President: Judy Vance, Vice President: Johnny Sutton, Secretary: Mary Sue Stamey, Treasurer: Judy Stephens, Reporter: Linda Harbison. Mr. Roper's Homeroom - President: Pam Dula, Vice President: Dixie Harris, Secretary: Lane Throneburg, Treasurer: Rama Lee Browning. Reporter: Gwynn Keller. However, time stops for no one. Thus we found ourselves as sophomores, well on our way to being called upper- classmen. Our advisors were Mrs. Moore, Mr. Harris, and Mr. Mull. Officers for our sophomore year were: Mrs. Moore's Homeroom - President: Linda Kay Whisnant, Vice-President: Gwynn Keller, Secretary: Roy Brittain, Treasurer: Lois Leonhardt. Mr. Mull's Homeroom - President; Judy Stephens, Secretary Linda Harbison, Treasurer: Kathy Daniels. Mr. Harris's Homeroom - President: Doris Beck, Vice-President: Carolyn Franklin, Secretary: Brenda Grindstaff, Treasurer: Land Throneburg, Reporter: Brenda Whisnant. This year fifteen of our classmates were honored by becoming Beta Club members. 50 They were Roy Brittain, Rama Brown- ing, Kathy Daniels, Pam Dulay Gar olyn Franklin, Linda Harbison, Dixie Harris, Lois Leonhardt, Zona Mull, Mary Sue Stamey, Judy Stephens, Johnny Sutton, Lane Throneburg, Brenda Whisnant, and Linda Kay Whis- nant. As time flew by we found ourselves as juniors. We had become upper- classmen, second only to the seniors. Things began to happen as we planned for our Junior-Senior Prom which was a great success, We were certainly fortunate to have Maurice Williams and The Zodiacs as our entertainment for the evening. Our Junior advisors were Miss Allen and Mr. Barrier. Class officers were as follows: Miss Allen's Homeroom - President: Judy Stephens, Vice-President: Dixie Harris, Secretary: Tommy Canipe, Treasurer; Kathy Daniels, Reporter: Linda Harbison, Chaplain: Brenda Whisnant. Mr, Barrier's Homeroom - President: Zona Mull, Vice President: Jerry Reed, Sec- retary: Lane Thronebury, Treasurer: Roy Brittain, Reporter: Carolyn Frank- lin. For the first time at Oak Hill a French club, Le Cercle Francais, was organized. Fourteen of our classmates were accepted into its membership. They were Rama Lee Browning, LaVern Cannon, Kathy Daniels, Pam Dula, Carolyn Franklin, Linda Harbison, Becky Keller, Gwynn Keller, Lois Leon- hardt, Zona Mull, Mary Sue Stamey, Karen Burleson, Judy Stephens, Lane Throneburg, and Brenda Whisnant. Also this year Judy Stephens was selected as Miss Hi Miss. Class Finally the time arrived. We were seniors, second to none. We thought the time would never come, but we finally received our rings. Senior offi- cers were - President: Tommy Canipe, Vice President: Eddie Hunter, Secre- | tary: Zona Mull, Treasurer: Judy Step- hens, Mrs. Broome, Mr. Mull, and Mr. Pearson gave us their shoulders to lean on during our last and most dif- ficult year of high school. Also this year Zona Mull was crowned Home- Stistory coming Queen and Judy Stephens was chosen Maid of Honor. The honor of being All-Conference was given to Tommy Canipe and the honor of being Honorable Mention All Conference was given to Eddie Hunter. But Father Time waits for no man. So we the Senior Class of 1966 leave behind us a history of fond memories which will not be forgotten as we write our own histories throughout the remain- der of our lives. HISTORIANS: Lois Leonhardt Zona Mull 5] Class Today, June 1, 1986, we Janie Bong and Jimmie Blipp, alias Pam Dula and Brenda Whisnant, are aboard the luxury liner The Lively Lunkhead. We were sent by our fellow associate, Secret Agent 007, James Bond, to investigate our fellow 1966 graduates of Oak Hill High, It is suspected that our former classmates may now be racketeers, and it is our job to find out who they are. Before setting sail, we receive a wel- coming message from the ship's Cap- tain, Rip (Kendall) Barrier. After the welcoming message the ship's steward, Jerry Reed, takes our bags to our cabin. The maid, Henrietta Ervin, is just leav- ing ourroom. We learn that the next cabin is occupied by none other than Doris Beck and Ruby Clark who are on leave from the W. A. V. E. S. At twelve bells we go'to the ship's dining room. The head waiter, James Noles, takes our order. Of course our lunch was delicious, being prepared by chief cook and bottle washer, Phillip Ervin. Alexander Corpening does the honor of uncorking our champagne. After dinner we relax in the sun while Carl Duckworth and Jerry Stamey swab the deck. On the lower deck we catch a glimpse of recreation directors Charla Young and Bill Keller. Next we go to Becky's Barn, operated by Becky Shuping. Becky is assisted by Dixie Harris and Janet Hurt. While being beautified we meet Mary Hunter, who is now a well-known psychologist, and Mary Sue Stamey, who is now a famed commercial artist. Plumber Jim Wascaster has the job of fixing a leaky faucet. Frophecy 52 After supper we go the the ship's en- tertainment hall. Charles Gantt starts the act off by giving his world famous hog-calling act. Dell Fleming is asked for an encore to do her renowned belly dance. Herman Kincaid does some fine opera singing and Jeanette Whisnant sings her new hit song I'm Forever Blow- ing Bubbles. After three days on the liner, we reach Miami Beach. We walk up Miami Boulevard and we meet Jackie Johnson selling violets. Norman McLean, now a chauffeur, brings to us our special forty-thousand dollar Aston-Martin. Our instructions are to leave immediately for Oak Hill, North Carolina. While driving along a scenic highway we see John Lingafelt and Earl Stamey operating a fruit stand. We stop at a gas station owned and operated by Loraine and Christine Allman. The attendants, Gwynn Keller, and Jo Ann Lowdermilk, give us special service. Once on our way again, we pick up hitchhikers Larry Putnam and Richard Belton, who are on their way to Char- lotte for a very important business deal. Policewomen Ida Jean Conley, Patricia Kincaid, and Patricia Ervin stop us for speeding. Finally we arrive at Oak Hill. We stay at a hotel owned by Ruby Smith and operated by Jack Annis. We visit the University of Oak Hill, the “Harvard of the South. We talk with Lane Throneburg, the president of the University. Roy Brittain, the Dean of Men, takes us on a tour. We see a Class Frophecy fi Cont ) sign on Professor Carolyn Franklin's door which reads, “Quiet, Math- ematician at work! We learn that Lois Leonhardt and Zona Mull are the heads of the photography department. We hear Tommy Canipe, the Professor of History, lecturing about the importance of pigeons during World War I. We hear a loud explosion from the lab which is conducted by Linda Harbison. We smell burned bis- cuits and we learn that Sharon Fox is the head of the Economics Department ...Clifford Smith shows us his award winning paintings. Next we visit Eddie Hunter who is conducting ballet classes for outstanding students Alice Coleman, Patsy Stewart, Mary St. John, and Robert Johnson, Jill Sisk and Linda Kay Whisnant, P. E. instructors, are doing a trapeze act in the gym, Now we travel to the well-known Oak Hill discotheque. Judy Vance, the hat check girl, takes our coats. Rama Lee Browning, the club's hostess, tells us that Kathy Daniels is now serving as a foreign missionary at the South Pole. Waitresses Joyce McCall and Leona Self serve us delicious hot dogs prepared by head cook Ronnie Whisnant. En- tertainment at the club consists of Judy Stephens and Patsy Burnette doing their ’a go-go dances. We are informed that Karen Burleson is the executive sec- retary to the President of the United States and Linda Truax is teaching psychology at U. C. L. A. Brenda Kay Ervin and Reba Clontz are serving as interpreters at the U. N. Suddenly, our two-way wrist radios buzz. Deanna Warren, special agent in London, informs us that the racke- teers we are looking for have been atrested on the charge of bootlegging. They are Mr. John N. Sutton, a pros- perous civil engineer, and Mr. Ronald Perry, a London playboy. The mission has now ended. Although we were sent on a wild goose chase, the mission had at least one advantage. We learned about our fellow alumni who owe all their prosperity to dear old Oak Hill High.
