1975 HARBOR LITES Volume XVII Oak Harbor High School Oak Harbor9 Ohio Jeri Jean Humphrey Editor-in- Chief Karen Gillfillan Business Manager Mrs. Soenichsen Advisor Dedication We, the class of 1975, are dedicating the annual Harbor Lites Yearbook to the building known as Oak Harbor High School because we, the last high school class to meet here, wish to honor the building for its service in our education. The original Oak Harbor High School, built on this site in 1875, consisted of three stories, each having two rooms. Two floors were added to the rear of the building in 1892. That building was condemned as unsafe and was torn down nineteen years later. The present building, erected in 1911, originally consisted of Rooms 111 and 124 and the rooms north of them. Through the years three additions increased the size of the building. 2 It is here that we have worked a little, and laughed a lot. We have lived here . . . 3 To bring us back in future years To scenes we all hold dear for aye; To scenes of joy and scenes of tears; The scenes of each dear High School day. To praise sometimes, sometimes to knock, To entertain, perchance to shock, Has been our purpose in this book, Its faults we pray you ll overlook. — from 1909 annual of Oak Harbor High School Table of Contents Student Life..........pg. 5 Classes...............pg. 17 Administration and Faculty.........pg. 57 Athletics.............pg. 67 Activities............pg. 95 Organizations.......pg. 115 Advertisements......pg. 145 5 r ■ 7 CO 10 12 13 14 15 17 Class of 1975 Class Colors: Purple and Gold Class Flower: Yellow Rose Class Motto: As we look to the future and imagine the glory; we see the past and remember the joy. Waters Elementary School. Connecticut, an eight-member band, played selections from Alice Cooper, Elton John, and Chicago, while 225 people danced. Queen Mary Moore, crowned by last year’s queen, Julie Felder, reigned during the evening’s festivities. Kim Adams and Eric Winters were crown bearers. Down by the River,” played after the crowning ceremony, was reserved for dancing by the queen and her court. Decorations of navy, royal, and sky blue festooned the throne, while candy favors and jack-o-lanterns adorned the tables. Fair fall weather, lively music, and a radiant queen made the homecoming dance especially enjoyable. 96 97 Junior Lenora Tack was escorted by Doug Lenz. Sophomore Libby Kilmer was escorted by Mark Wilkins. Freshman Diane Dewitz was escorted by Mark Martin. Queen Mary Moore was escorted by Tim Konicczny. Senior attendant Debbie Hymorc was escorted by Dave Kersten. 99 Fall Play — Tom Sawyer Jeff Smidutz —Joe Harper Dean Buehler — Walter Potter Dale Distcl — Tom Sawyer The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” was the 1974 fall play. It centered around difficulties Tom and Huck encountered after seeing Indian Joe commit murder in a graveyard where the boys went to try a wart cure. Later, Tom, Huck, and Joe Har- per left town to become pirates but returned in time to attend their own funerals. Thespian advisor Mrs. Helen Grummel was assisted by stu- dent director Teresa Nietz. The new school is scheduled to be ready for its first classes in the fall of 1975. Its facilities will be of important use in the educa- tion of Oak Harbor students. Many of this year’s clubs, such as FFA, FHA, and Student Council, have been helping by adding tools or equipment to the present supply so that next year’s classes will have more to work with. We’d like to congratulate the upcoming classes on their good fortune. We hope they use the building well and wisely. BELOW: As building progressed, some of the first equipment to be installed was a variety of lockers. 103 On November 8,1974, the seniors in the marching band were honored during the pre- game activities. This was the last high school football game at which they marched. As the band stood at attention, each senior was called forward to receive a yellow rose, the class flower, tied with purple and gold ribbon, class colors. Then, with the band and audience accompany- ing them, the seniors sang the Alma Mater.” 104 NO PLAY??? ymoM nv ODO ROCKETsSJ VISITOR |C| i|o® IQtoco L|otr H«c ■ Right on. Rockets! Naptime. Pretend we’re glad we’ll soon be through, Wouldn’t dare let others know we’re blue. Just two more months we like to say And try to act so light and gay; But deep inside our hearts are sad, And we confess we aren’t glad. We think of all the friendship and fun we’ve shared And nothing will he able to be compared To the work and play Of our by-gone high school days. — From 1964 Harbor Litcs 144 PERCH FISHING COME OUT THRU THE WEEK AND AVOID THE WEEKEND RUSH! Champs To go to state, to defeat the opponent who has beaten you at district and sectional contests, to become state champ, is a dream of any wres- tler, but Mark Mayer made it come true. Mayer, wrestling in the 155- pound weight class, trounced Carl Gould, Cardinal Stritch, in a 4-1 bout on March 15 at St.John’s Arena in Columbus, Ohio. During the off- season, Mayer runs ten miles a week, lifts weights, and wrestles at every opportunity. In the fall he will attend Bowling Green University on a partial scholarship. Besides wrestling, he plans to study special educa- tion and to participate in intramural sports. Coach Dennis Kcrstcn’s team brought home more than an individual state championship, however. The team also placed seventh in the state, aided by the outstanding skill of seniors Jeff Winke and Rich Rickner. Winke, 98-pound state champ last year, placed fifth after losing his 112- pound match to the unbeaten eventual three-time state champ. Co-win- ner with Mayer of the Rockets’ Most Valuable Wrestler award, Winke also made first-team all-Ottawa County squad for the third consecutive year, as did Rickner. Rickner, in his second trip to the state meet, placed sixth, having fallen to the eventual runner-up in the 126-pound divi- sion. Both of them are now considering university study at Toledo or Bowling Green. In a grand finale to the track season, junior Doug Biggert pole- vaulted to a state championship, reaching a height of 13,9, on the Ohio State football field. Using his new heavier pole, he made four unsuc- cessful practice vaults at 137. Biggert hopes to go to state for another crack at the record height, 14'7 . Biggert participates in four events at the local track meets. Because of his championship and his success in the other events, he was named News-Herald Athlete of the Year.” He plans to attend either Bowling Green or Toledo University but doesn’t know in what area he will study. Although he has received no scholar- ship offers, he has been notified that he is a scholarship possibility. Big- gert is 6 2 tall and weighs 155 pounds. PINAFORE, by Gilbert and Sullivan, was presented as the all-school musical, directed by Mrs. Helen Grummel and student director Karen Gillfil- lan. First produced in London in 1878, it is a satire on the English navy during the Victo- rian period. As the curtain opens, sailors are scrubbing the quarterdeck of H.M.S. Pinafore, singing We Sail the Ocean Blue,” as Little Buttercup appears with snuff and tobaccy” for them. All are happy except Ralph Rackstraw, hopelessly in love with the Captain’s daughter, Josephine, who is promised to Sir Joseph Porter, head of the Royal Navy. Josephine and Ralph plan to elope, but the villain, Dick Deadeye, overhearing their conversation, threatens them. Meanwhile Sir Joseph, believing Josephine’s shyness is due to his high rank, explains how love can level all ranks. (And the plot thickens . . .) While Buttercup tries to console the Captain about Josephine’s marrying below her rank, Dick Deadeye exposes the plot and Ralph is arrested. But Little Buttercup saves the day when she discloses how she nursed two babies long ago and accidentally mixed them. One, who was well-born, was Ralph; the other, of low degree, was the Captain. Upon hearing this, Sir Joseph gives Josephine to Ralph, who takes command of the ship. The erstwhile Captain proposes to Little Buttercup, and the entire crew joins in for the happy ending. H.M.S. Members then proceeded to State Contest, where they earned an I” rating in class B2 competi- tion. State Contest was highlighted by the first appearance of the band in the new uni- forms. Formal presentation of the uniforms to the local public was the main feature of the annual spring concert in May. The drive for 170 new uniforms began in November of 73, with a goal of $21,000. Through hard work of the Music Boosters and support of parents, businesses, and the public, the full amount was realized in sixteen months. To raise the money, Music Boosters staged spaghetti suppers, bake sales, a TV raffle, Tag Day, and door-to-door campaign, in which band members canvassed the school district, asking donations. Many families and businesses donated entire uniforms at the cost of $140 each. Special credit goes to the Boosters and their hard-working committees: Selection Committee, Ways and Means, and especially the Finance Committee and its chairman, Mrs. Charles Smith. Thanks to everyone for his energy and support. rr tt • ?? Herbies H. Myers, B. Cross, A. Minick, L. Ganske, and D. Elliott receive Thespian Awards. Jenkins-Rhodes Combo FRONT ROW: K. Walterschied, J.
