Through the four years that Mr. Obee has been with us, he has contributed much to the sci- ence department of our school. His attitudes, his abilities, and his sense of humor create an interesting class atmosphere. We Salute You . . . Administration The administration has done a fine job in making the school function smooth- ly and properly. A note of thanks should be given to each person who has helped to make it so. Paul Lockwood, Luther Mylander, Carmon Norwlne, Elden Leow, President; Bernard Scheuerman, Clerk; Robert Minick, Melvin Fuller. Administrative Body Mr. David Martin The Board of Education and Mr. Martin are responsible for the proper functioning of the entire school sys- tem. Together, they decide on school policies, transact the business of the district, and hire teachers that will aid in the promotion of learning. In January, 1966, Mr. Minick re- placed Mr. Mylander on the Board of Education. These administrative of- ficers give aid and direction to the process of learning that takes place in the school each day. Mr. Thomas Gibbs, Guidance Counselor Mr. Clifford Herbert, Principal Principal Guidance Counselor Secretary Our principal, secretary, and guidance counselor constantly find themselves involved with various student matters. Our principal is concerned with the student’s behavior, atti- tude, and ability. His relationship with the student demands mutual understanding. Performing duties for both the administration and student body, our secretary is fully occupied. Her many duties contribute to our smooth running office. Student matters concerning selection of courses, colleges, and careers are handled by our guidance counselor. Many stu- dents seek his advise, assured that the answer will solve the problem. Mrs. Judy Wolf, Secretary Cooks Custodians Bus Drivers From Left to Right: H. Martin, substitute; M. Carpenter. Not shown, L. Ittel. It is the duty of each bus driver to see that he delivers the students safely to and from school every week day. Our three custodians provide a clean and orderly building for all school ac- tivities and for extra-curricular programs. The daily meals prepared for the fac- ulty and student body are under the super- vision of our cooks. They see that we are provided with the proper vitamins needed in a balanced diet. Row 1: L. Beck, L. Lochotzki. Academics Since high school life is centered mainly around studies, a well-planned academic program is a necessity for each student. Every student should plan his courses around the type of work he decides to enter after graduation. With this basic background in his chosen field, he will be better fit to reach his goals in the future. Teachers also play an important role in the studies of students. It is the duty of teachers to instruct and help each stu- dent to gain knowledge in some way or another. Charles Smith Interested students have the oppor- tunity to take a full four-year course in math. Algebra I, geometry, and advanced algebra compose the first three years. Two semesters of math, consisting of trigonometry and modern math are of- fered to the seniors. In modern math, a recent addition to our curriculum, the students learn by teaching each other. The teacher is there to give assistance when needed. A general math course is offered to those students not wishing to take alge- bra. This course is designed essentially to review and extend the math principles needed to help the pupils in their later life. 10 Melvin Hoover Carol Young Scientific experimentation and research helps students to develop a logical approach to problem solving. Interested persons can take a wide variety of sciences, including general science, biology, chemistry, physics, and physical science. Through automation in our complex society, a workable knowledge of science is needed, even in the home, in order for a person to survive. Ronald Obee 11 Our language department con- sists of English, speech, college composition, Latin, and French. Because a sound background is important, English is a re- quired course for three years. Speech is offered to those students who desire to develop self-confidence and speaking ability through actual experience. College composition is de- signed to give college-bound stu- dents practice in the communi- cation skills through the use of creative writing. Through an intense study of foreign languages, the student learns to speak the language fluently and is made aware of the many English words that are de- rived from both the Latin and French words. Carl Smith Carey Oakley Developing Judy Placko Carol Nowakowski Martha Baumgartner Patricia Menslng Communication Skills 13 Exploring Civilization People influence their environ- ment. Through the study of social subjects, students can see the cycles of social change. Through world and American his- tory, the students develop an under- standing of the ancient civilizations and study through modern times. American government furnishes practical information of the workings of the political world and the struc- ture of the American government. Geography is a specialized course in the field of learning about weather, minerals and resources. Sociology helps students to understand how people think and live. Charles Todd George Millie Elizabeth Young Focus on Business Skills General business, book- keeping, shorthand, and typing are courses offered to stu- dents having an interest in the commercial field for personal or professional reasons. With the ability acquired through these courses, the graduate can provide saleable skills to the businessman. His knowledge of the business sys- tem will often determine whether or not he will get the position he is seeking. Jane Schuerman Glendora Sorg 15 The vocational department of our school consists of the courses in voca- tional agriculture, home economics, and industrial arts. Vocational agriculture prepares young men for a career in farming. Through the four years in this field, stu- dents learn about livestock, crop pro- duction, farm mechanics, and basic farm management. Home economics teaches young stu- dents the functions of the home. Students study sewing, cooking, and personal re- lationships. Specialized courses are available to interested junior and senior students in housing, interior decoration, equipment, and furniture. Industrial arts teaches students safety habits in working with power tools. Courses available in this field include mechanical drawing, plastics, electric- ity, and architectural drafting. Preparation for Vocations Roger Carpenter Larry Helntz Beverly Smith The Study of Healthful Habits Healthful habits are taught in the areas of physical education, health, and driver education. Healthful habits in physical education includes teaching stu- dents how to keep their bodies fit through physical exercise and hard work. Health education is given to all students so that they can under- stand the body processes and how they can keep themselves in good condition through cleanliness and other means. Healthful habits in driver edu- cation takes a different approach. Habits found here include safety of operation, obeying traffic laws, and using good judgement while driving the car. 18 Appreciation Through Creative Art Josephine Paulus Mrs. Paulus has each of her fifty six talented students well under way in the first year for art in our curricu- lum. The junior and senior high school students have been exploring the elements of a structure in flat pictures and in three dimensional ob- jects. They have been study- ing perspective, balance, rythym, and composition. They experiment with line and shape, texture and color, and have painted still life and sketched portraits. All phases of this pro- gram work toward bringing out the creativity and origi- nality of the students. 20 John Frey tag The Sound of Music Led by Miss Spieldenner, our vocal department consists of girls’ and boys’ chorus, a mixed chorus, and an ensemble. These groups specialize in a wide range of choral works suitable for school, church, and community functions. Con- certs are given throughout the year, and small groups per- form for community activities. Mr. Freytag, our band director, has led our band to desirable heights. This group analyzes and plays both new and old music. Marching is the major fall function because of the participation in football shows and parades. The con- cert band performs at concerts throughout the year. During the spring much time is spent preparing for district and state contests, the real test of proficiency. Mary Spieldenner 21 Broader Opportunities— Students interested in preparing for a career in anything from child care to auto mechanics or computers have been given vast opportunities at Penta County. This addition to our curriculum has broadened the scope of our education system. The newest possible equipment, training on var- ious machines, and even actual job experience helps make the learning process meaningful. Students graduating from this school have skills that they can offer to business and industry immediately after high school. For those wishing to continue their education, they may attend the technical college at Penta County. 22 Penta County 23 Please, will you get to work! Mrs. Odelle Morse Study Hall and Library The study hall monitor, Mrs. Morse, is daily confronted with the problems of 125 students each period of the day. Not only does she control the pupils in the study hall, but she also assists teachers in grading test papers. When she finds time, she works with a knitting project. When Mrs. Morse permits the stu- dents to use the library facilities, they are under the supervision of Miss Frank. She helps them to find information they need for their varied subjects. Miss Darlene Frank We don’t pass notes In study hall, or do we? mm The twelve years spent together as a class have passed by so rapidly. Many happy as well as sad moments have been shared together during that time, and the senior year is no exception. Graduation is the final step for some of the students, while others will further their education in any number of different fields. What- ever these students do in the future it is our hope that they will keep in mind the training they received at S-OH. The attitude taken upon enter- ing high school often deter- mines the student’s pos- sible success in future years of school. As a freshman, the stu- dent often begins high school in a state of both excitement and bewilder- ment. Gradually, though, he grows more accustomed to high school life. Each year he seems to develop more self-assurance and confidence. All underclassmen look forward eagerly to pos- sessing the highest status in high school, a senior. Underclassmen Class Officers From Left to Right: A. Bensch, D. Wolf, M. Thier- wechter, Mrs. Young, J. Wlkle. The junior class spent the year preparing for the junior- senior prom. The money- making project for the year involved selling magazine sub- scriptions. The money was used to pay for the prom in the spring. The juniors presented their play and stunts in the fall with much success. All of these things added to a enjoyable year for the class of 1967. Junior Class of 1967 D. Almendinger M. Apling S. The clubs of our school serve varied purposes. Although some are aimed primarily at learning, several attempts to combine pleasure with learning. Besides this purpose, clubs inspire within the student qualities of leadership, co-operation, and initiative. Organizations Harbor Lites Staff Row Is K. Lorentz, P. Knieriem. Row 2: N. Rife, M. The library, headed by Miss Frank, pro- vides a tool for students in our school. In the library, students can find information on cur- rent affairs, and do research work on par- ticular topics that are assigned by faculty members. Library Workers For their leisure moments, students are encouraged to read from the many books available in the library. Many records must be kept by Miss Frank about the books, periodicals, and other things in the library. New books must be placed on the shelves and old ones must be mended. All of this work keeps a librarian quite busy. Miss Darlene Frank, Librarian Senior Row Is M. Thierwechter, P. Bartell, M. Schiller, B. Hemminger, A. Foreman, J. Pinson. Row 2: D. Haas, D. Sutter, L. Each member was re- sponsible for learning his music and his position and had to take it upon himself to get it done. After football season, the band got down to work on the concert music that they enjoyed playing. Old and new music for all occasions were analyzed, taken apart, and put back together so that it was played properly. Several times during the year, concerts were given for both the public and the high school. A Christmas concert was given, using as its theme, the Viet Nam soldiers. After the first of the year, the band got down to work on music for district and state band contests. This has been one of the highlights of the year. The band has always given its best per- formance at this competition. The dance band and other small groups have worked together throughout the year. They add variety to concerts, and they are a method of self improvement. Mr. Freytag has led the band for several years, and he has now been given new facilities. A new building is to be erected for the purpose of accommodating the music department for the coming years. Band Row Is M. Minick, B. Koepke, L. Axe, S. Baumgartner, N. Arndt, J. Starkey. Row 2: C. Young men develop many desirable characteris- tics through such activities. They develop attitudes of sportsmanship, co-operation, and a sense of responsibility. Besides these kinds of quali- ties, they develop physically and mentally. The 1965-66 coaching staff includes: Coach Millie; Coach Lutz, Athletic Di- rector; Coach Schuff; Coach Todd; Coach Ricker; and Coach Oakley. Row X: Coach Ricker, Coach Millie, D. Sorg, G. The record may not sound impressive, but any witness of the games will testify that our team always fought to the end. When the chips were down, the Rockets fought all the harder. They dropped their first three games with- out scoring, but on the fourth, their newly gained experience was obvious. In this game they met this year’s league winner in one of the thoughest games all year but lost by a score of 16-6. The Rockets went into orbit for their next three games, winning each. Although playing good games, the Rockets dropped their last three games to three of the better teams in the area. In the last three games, we saw fine performances by boys who will be back next year. Several boys did a fine job for themselves as well as for the school. Some of them won honors in the Sandusky Bay Conference. Those honored were T. Sorg, first team, offensive center; D. Martin, hon. men., defensive end; B. Simpkins, hon. men., offensive quarter- back and defensive safety; D. Wolf, hon. men., offensive guard; B. Freimark, hon. men., offensive fullback and defensive linebacker; M. Reif, hon. men., defensive guard; L. Witt, hon. men., defensive tackle. 84 Row 1: W. Freimark, P. Miller, L. Witt, M.
