Text from Pages 1 - 80 of the 1961 volume:

We, the class of 1961, dedicate our yearbook with deepest grat- itude to Miss Emilie Timpe. Throughout forty-three years of selfless effort, she has given of her heart and knowledge. We find memorials of her effort in our lib- rary, the Rocket, the namesake of the Future Teachers of America, and in the mental growth of two generations of students. No one was more needed by so many, nor shall we ever look for- ward without finding some trace of her fine guidance in our future. 3n %momn SHERI LYNN MILLINGER And when the stream Which overflowed the soul was passed away, A consciousness remained that it had left. Deposited upon the silent shore Of memory, images and precious thoughts. That shall not die, and cannot be destroyed. OUR MARCH TO VICTORY As we marched through our four years of active duty we fought teachers, assignments, detention, and all that stood in our paths, until after four years of fighting, we finally come to the grand finale, GRADUATION! Here is the Class of '61’s four year history. We, the Class of '61, were drafted and began our four years of service in September of 1957. We had 78 boys and 48 girls in our squadron ’61. Sergeant Boner was our commander- in-chief. After we recruits got acquainted with our new surroundings, we elected our officers. For our president, and vice-president, we chose Recruits John Sutter and Jim Baumgartner; Recruit Karen Hurrell was elected to be in charge of our small funds as secretary-treasurer. As our representatives to the Army Council, in civilian life student council. Rich Tallman and Annette Gluth were chosen. Recruit Eileen Heinsen was favored to be our attendant for the Army-Navy homecoming game. This pretty recruit was also one of the leaders of the Army Band as a majorette. We had only one squadron member on the Army newspaper, the ROCKET. That first year was a rough one for us and our teachers. We had the chance to break in a new staff member, Mr. Charles Smith. Maybe the recruits won’t remember any of their algebra, but they will never forget those jokes. In the beginning of that first year, called basic training, the squadron was divided into two societies, Adelphian and Lesbian. At Thanksgiving, the recruits were homesick, so the Adelphians decided to give a play for them. Two recruits from Squadron ’61 participated in this play. At Christmas time it was the Lesbians who presented the play. One of our squadron was in the cast for this event. Then there was the inter-society play in which the Lesbians and Adelphians combined their talents. From Squadron ’61, three recruits participated. On April 15, 1958 we decided to try our wings at a play by ourselves. We presented Mama’s Getting with Sergeant Frank as our director. After she survived that play, she was advanced in rank to a Major. The cast included Martin Brewster, Karen Schultz, Jan Adams, Tom Hart, Diana Nehls, Nick Kajca, Martha Humphrey, Pam Freimark, Randall Felder, and Eileen Heinsen, who had the lead. Eileen got sick just before curtain time, but Helen Millinger took her place and did a good job. During this year, three superior recruits, Tom Hanny, Nick Kajca, and John Sutter won letters for running (away from K.P. Duty), but they were caught and thrown in the brig by entertainment director John Erwin. To climax our basic training, we held a dance on April 26, 1958. Then came three blessed months of leisure life, our summer leave, which we made the best of. But then in September of ’58, we would be called back. However, then we would no longer be recruits, but big Privates with one stripe on our shoulders. It is now September of '58 and we are back. Commander Martin was handed the big job of ordering us big-headed privates. It was a big job, so we chose Privates Rich Tallman, President; Bob Steinmiller, Vice-President; Carolyn Behlmer, Secretary-Treasurer to help him do his job. To represent the squadron we elected Bob Millinger and Eileen Heinsen. This year our attendant for the big game was Annette Gluth. One private was on the ROCKET staff. One member also, was in the Adelphian Christmas program. The class program, No MORE BOYS’’, was presented with Kathy Ruckman, Randall Felder, Pam Freimark, John Rapparlie, Bob Steinmiller, Geneva Gulau, Ann Augsburger, and Tom Hart doing the honors on February 2, 1959. We had one member of our squadron in the inter-society play. During this year we had many athletic people who received letters for their feats. Receiving letters in football were Privates Nick Kajca, Rich Tallman, and John Sutter. Receiving letters in basketball for service above and beyond the call of duty were Rich Tallman, John Sutter, and Jim Baumgartner. This year we had some privates with a love of running who received letters for their perfect rhythm; they were Lowell Myerholtz, Bob Millinger, and Bob Steinmiller. It has been said that a sophomore is ranked between the inexperienced and those who know it all. Well, after this year we were feeling pretty experienced and were all set for our re- maining two years. We asked for and were granted a leave of absence for three months to rest up for our next year. In September, 1959, we again approached the brig and army life. Perhaps we were a bit more confident this year, because we had joined the upper ranks as sergeants. Under the command of Sergeant-at-arms, Mrs. Young, we started our rigid campaign to make the Army rich for their main project this year, Cinderella’s Ball”. To further aid the cause we elected Sergeants Jim Baumgartner, President; Helen Millinger, Vice-President; Karen Schultz, Secretary; and Donna Lochotzki had the big job of taking care of the gold in Fort Knox. Our Representatives to the Army Council were Karen Hurrell and John Sutter. Our attendant to the Army-Navy football game was Nola Witt. Leading the Band as Drum Majorette was Eileen Heinsen, and Donna Lochotzki as majorette. The cast for our play The Laughing Ghost” included Martha Humphrey, Martin Brewster, Nola Witt, Geneva Gulau, Ellen Lamb, Randall Felder, and Paula Nolan. Sharon Ford was student director. Five of ours squadron served on the ROCKET staff. Elected from our progressive class for society officers were Chris Clowe for Adelphians, and Rich Tallman for Lesbians. One big day in this year was the day we got our class rings. We got them around Christmas, and even though they emptied our pockets, we were proud of them. Six members helped make the Lesbian Christmas Play a success and one member contributed to the Adelphian triumph. We were proud to have ten veterans (juniors of course) show their talent in the inter-society play. Chris Clowe had the hard job as assistant director. Finally we had enough in our funds to plan the prom. The squad chose as their theme “Cinderella’s Ball. Then came weeks of planning and worrying and trying to keep a secret of the chosen theme. It was a hard task, but we over- came the obstacles with the help of the committees and their chairmen. Decorations Com- mittee, Eileen Heinsen; Program Committee, Donna Lochotzki, Tables, Charles Siska; After- Prom, Annette Gluth, and Chaperons, Pam Freimark. Then on-May 7, 1960, the big day arrived, and all our worrying proved to be for nothing for the prom was enjoyed by everyone. On awards day, twenty-four juniors received awards. During this eventful year Gene Hemminger, Bob Millinger, Bob Steinmiller, and Jerry Mulligan received their letters in football. Tom Hanny and Tom Witt received letters in basketball. Doug Kodak, Don Sievert, Charles Siska, Manager, and Tom Witt, Manager, received their letters in track. We were again granted a leave for our good behavior (the majority, that is). Next year, our biggest and best, we would return as full-fledged generals. As we left the school on that last day as underclassmen, we made a promise to our commanding officers, “We Shall Return.” The following September of 1960, Squadron '61 kept their promise and RETURNED. We began our four year service with 126 recruits, but we lost a few during the stiff maneuvers and rigid basic training for now we began our final year at Fort Salem - Oak Harbor with only 78 in our ranks. Since we were now generals and getting pretty big for our stripes. Commanding Officer Herbert volunteered for the immense job of guiding us in the right paths. Squadron '61 elected Helen Millinger for their president. Gene Hemminger for their vice-president, and John Sutter for their secretary-treasurer. We chose to represent us in council Ann Augsburger and Lowell Myerholtz. Our attendant for the big game this year was Chris Clowe. We honored as our queen, Eileen. Society officers were chosen, and Chris Clowe and Paula Nolan came out on top for the Adelphians, while Nick Kajca and Lowell Myerholtz led the Lesbians. This year we had thirteen of our generals on the Army paper, with Ellen Lamb as editor. The Seniors put on a play entitled Dear Ruth” which was a huge success. After such a brilliant performance Kathy Ruckman, who had lead, Randall Felder, Bob Steinmiller,. Jan Adams, Ellen Lamb, Paula Nolan, Jerry Mulligan, Doug Kodak, Ann Augsburger, and Diane Nehls were commended for their talent and given a raise. From Squadron ’61 two Lesbians participated in the Thanksgiving play and two Adelphians participated in the Christmas Program. During this important year Lowell Myerholtz and Bill Webb received their letters in football. Don Sievert received his letter in basketball. That about sums up our story, but here is a little postscript. P.S. We, the Class of ’61 will graduate on June 1, 1961. We chose for our flower a yellow rose, and decided to wear white gowns with gold tassels on our caps for our big moment. As we walk across the stage on June 1, 1961, many wonderful moments will be remembered, but more still we will look forward to the future, and try to live our motto, “Thresholds hold no glory from within; we must open them -- and step beyond. Smoi Clou o( 61 As we, EILEEN HEINSEN and DONNA LOCHOTZKI were sitting here on the eve of June 1, 1971, we started reminiscing old times when we were Seniors at S.O.H. High School. As we took a walk down town this morning we ran into some of our old classmates. We first had to stop at the City Hospital to see a friend and there we saw one of the hospital’s best nurses, CHRIS CLOWE taking care of JOHN SUTTER who had broken his leg trying to do some fancy dodging on one of the country’s best football teams. Going on we ran into two more nurses, NOLA WITT and HELEN MILLINGER, and it seems they were arguing over who was going to be the doctor’s assistant in the next maternity case. We next ran into MARTHA HUMPHREY who was carrying a box of candy. She was going to visit DIANE NEHLS, who seemed to have fallen out of a plane and forgot to use a parachute as she was doing a test flight for the Air Force. As we turned the corner to go into the heart of town, MERLE SANDWISCH was shout- ing the latest headlines of the Daily Press announcing there has been a change this year in politics. Who should be running as the first woman president but one of our most out- standing classmates, ELLEN LAMB and her running mate KAREN MEINKE ! On the society page we noticed that JOAN BURMEISTER was announcing her engagement to a very pros- perous man. Lucky Joan! Next stop, the movies at SISKA’S Theater. Showing today was THE CLARK GABLE STORY starring JAN ADAMS and produced by ANN AUGSBURGER. After we were seated we discovered that JANET RAPPARLIE and BOB MILLINGER were behind us with their family of five. Bob was trying to buy some popcorn from DARRELL DICK. After the movies we decided to have our hair done. As we passed the barber shop we saw TOM HANNY cutting DENNIS FEHR’S hair and there is CINDY KUZEROSKI giving BILL BECK a manicure. As we entered the beauty shop we had our pick of beauticians, ANNETTE GLUTH, JANET PERRY, LINDA RUST, and isn’t that RICHARD TALLMAN over there. Continuing on we decided to stop at the first restaurant we came to. Well, what a co- incidence, the BEHLMER-WITT Cafe. After being seated, ANNETTE SCHLIPF took our order and behind the kitchen doors was chief cook, DON AREBAUGH and the chief dish washer, BOB BRACKETT. We then decided to take a cab to the heart of the city. We had a lady cab driver, GENEVA GULAU, and from her we discovered that JIM DEHRING is living in Texas and has become a millionaire. He had bought an oil field by mistake. She also told us that JEFF MEINKE is the president of the cab company that she works for. As we arrived in town we noticed that there was a carnival going on. There’s the Tunnel of Love, with none other than BETTY HORN taking the tickets and the first couple we see is our own PAM FREIMARK and MYRON FREDRICK. After all these years and they’re still in love. Isn’t that wonderful? Further on, we see a fire-eater. It can’t be but it is none other than LARRY ST. CLAIR. Anything to be different. Also we stopped to take a look at the Fat Lady. We didn’t recognize her at first, but then she said “Hello” to us. Why it’s SHARON FORD! Whatever happened to her! Things sure have changed since our high school years. As we looked up at the grandstand, we saw many people gather- ing. Well, we must go too, the stock car races are about to begin. Some of those drivers looked familiar, TOM ALMENDINGER. JIM CORTHELL, DAVID KODAK, and TOM LYKENS. What’s BARB KAISER doing down there? Is she a driver? No, she's just wishing her husband good luck. Before we leave we must take a look at the Dancers. Wow! Look who they are. MARY WHIPPLE, FAYE WENDT, KAREN SCHULTZ, and BARBARA LANGHOLZ. We also see some familiar faces in the crowd admiring these girls. MARTIN BREWSTER, JACK DEAL, DONALD SEIVERT, and BILL OLIVER. We must travel on now, but just as we go by the Merry-Go-Round we see GENE HEM- MINGER and LOWELL MYERHOLTZ sneaking on without a ticket. My gosh, and at their age. Journeying on we pass the town’s auditorium. The stage play DEAR RUTH is being presented. As we peek inside we see PAULA NOLAN rehearsing her drunken scene. She’s at it again. Well, it can happen to the best of us. There’s ROBERT STEINMILLER, but he’s not rehearsing, he’s sleeping. I suppose he can do that though because he’s got a pretty active part. As we pass the high school we see RON EASTON and JERRY MULLIGAN as janitors cleaning the yard and there’s the football coach, why if it isn’t Mr. Touchdown”,NICK KAJCA. I’m afraid the team will have to snap to it with Nick as their coach. School is just dismissing and here come some of the teachers, RANDALL FELDER, DOUGLAS KODAK, KATHY RUCKMAN.and LUONA FETTERMAN. Next we thought we would get a little shopping done. As we entered the KOHLI De- partment Store we see FRAN CHIO in the Men’s Shop. Hmm. We better go to the Woman’s Shop, BILL WEBB, the clerk. How things do change ! Down the street two policemen, RICK BOWERS and NORRIS SCHIMMING are escorting JIM BAUMGARTNER into the police station. Lets see what is happening. Oh, just a speeding violation but with Judge SCOTT STAHL it could be rough. It seems he gave JOHN PETERSEN a year in jail for killing a cat. To make our day complete we must stop at a nite club. Greeting us at the door was RONALD SCHANKE. He tells us that he is the new manager and that he has hired some of our old classmates to be dancers. He took us to our table personally as the floor show was ready to begin. The can-can was the first number with BARB BANKY, CAROL KAISER, CAROL MAYS, BERNITA MILLER, and as their leader JUANITA LEMKE. We went back stage to talk to them awhile and they informed us that DAN HARTMAN is their director and MARVIN KLEINHANS his assistant. JIM GRIEGER is their dancing instructor. After our visit we called a cab and came home. Well, this was the most exciting day we have ever had and we know that our classmates have all become a success after graduating from good old Salem-Oak Harbor High School.
