What a time of building friendships and foundations, trusts and understandings - structure not easily seen by the passer-by, but as real as, and more lasting than the mountains of grammar exercises and literature. , To the builders, my staff, who helped to put it all together I would like to say Thanks. Thanks for staying that first week in September when all you heard was You will have to work very hard on this yearbook. Thanks for your enthusiasm as you tried the new and foreign concept of lay-out. Thanks for letting me be a teacher rather than warden almost all of the time. Thanks for accepting the responsibility of yourselves. Thanks for being patient when the pictures turned out strange, the copy wouldn't fit, when we had to borrow typewriters because the seven lined up on the floor wouldn't type, when l goofed the directions or forgot to buy film. . 1 Thanks to each of you who said, Sure I will help when the due l dates drew near and the jobs stacked up. Thanks for listening and knowing when your inexperienced teacher needed help. Thanks for letting me see a part of you that's not always open to others; so they never have a chance to know how really terrific today's youth can be. There's a sweet sadness that comes with June as goodbyes are said. I thank you for the gift of memories that I will always treasure. Together we met the obstacles and challenges of producing a yearbook. Together we met each of those challenges and overcame 4 them. Together we built a great yearbook. And together we built a great year. This is to you, from me for everything and with everything. Miss Kes f?? gwxnyu Xx 54!!! .qu x? . 47,, ITIES ACTIV H . Panter Pac put together a large array of activities for the week of September I7 thru the 2l. The pep rally started out by Peter Horlezeder's and Consuelo Naran- jo's countries being honored by playing their National Anthems. Skits represent- ing several countries were presented by different students from the school. Some of the Oak Grove alumni were asked to stand for special recognition. One of the most memorable moments of the pep rally was when the seniors were asked to stand on the gym floor. This was their last Homecoming and they ended it by sing- ing the school song. Following the pep rally was the annual bon fire. Roger Hipsher had the honor of striking the match. The huge fire was surrounded by hundreds of Oak Grove fans. The dummy representing Odessa was thrown into the fire to prove that Odessa was going to get burned. Odessa's sorry day was here. The Oak Grove Panther's continued the Home- coming festivities with the parade. The theme It's a Small World , originated in Florida, where the cheerleaders attended their summer camp. Coach Pirch and his wife were asked to be the Grand Mar- shalls because they were perfect repre- sentatives for the United States. The pa- rade consisted of the marching band. cheerleaders, the queen candidates and floats entered by school clubs. The memorable parade was enjoyed by the community as well as the Panthers. The senior candidates take their places, too, waving and smiling to friends and family in the audience. Moments later, '83 queen Laura Baker crowned senior Dana Huff the new Homecoming queen. After a 34-l2 Homecoming victory against the Odessa Bulldogs, the Panthers took a little time out to celebrate. The annual dance was held on Saturday, September 22, with music courtesy of Dave Krieger and Gemini Productions. The dance turned out to be a fun and fitting way to end Spirit Week. The efforts made by the Student Council were once again very successful. The dance was held on the East Mezzanine of the High School gym. The music for the dance was supplied by Quadra Sound Mobile Music Systems of Columbia, Mo. Each candidate was nominated and voted on by their fellow classmates during their class meetings. The Senior candidates, Susan Barkus and Dave Baxter will have the memories of representing their class in the Christmas dance. Juniors, Bobby Zimmershied and Sabrina Turner will look on to their senior year. Shawn Fox and Shana Noteman, sophomore candidates, will remember it as a year in the rising. Freshman candidates, Randy Nadeau and Michelle Cooper, faced the new experience and began to realize the fun of being in high school. Between the beats of New Wave Rock 'N' Roll, the Christmas court walked through the crowd to await the crowning. Santa Claus made an appearance as Shelly Moore announced the King and Queen, Dave Baxter and Susan Barkus. Scott Tucker and Greg George awarded the Queen with a crown and the King with a key ring. As Dave Baxter and Susan Barkus danced as King and Queen the rest of the couples joined in. The enjoyment of the dance lingered through the crowd to make the night complete. The night was filled with a lot of 3 laughs and maybe even a few tears. It takes all this and much more. This year's eight member squad under the direction of Cindy Sivils competed with the band at the Concordia Parade, the Carrolton Band Day, and Fayette Band Day. Since Mr. Bob Gessley became director in I983, there's been a noticeable change in the vocal department, one the students, faculty, and community have noticed. Concert Choir, once seen only in con- certs and an occasional school assembly is now seen in places like the Blue Ridge Mall, St. Mary's Hospital, and the Jackson County Jail. Swing Choir is on the road more, too. They frequently sing for the VlP's, and travel with Concert Choir wherever they go. Swing Choir also goes on tour with the Stage Band in the Spring. Fresh- man choir still maintains its role as a training ground; from here comes the much-needed talent that forms the other two choirs. Despite the ups and downs that go with singing for an audience, all the choirs had a great year! Long practice sessions, cooperat- ive spirit, enthusiasm and dedica- tion to cheerleading are a few of the ways one might describe the junior varsity squad. These young ladies attended Universal Cheer- leading Association's summer camp in Columbia, bringing home a vari- ety of ribbon's and spirit awards. AlthOugh they thoroughly enjoyed each of the football games, one of the highlights of the year was being able to share in the excitement and thrills of victory with the girl's bas- ketball team! All the dedication of running. spitting, and not eating just to make weight for nine minutes on the mat, finally paid off as the l984-85 wres- tlers warmed up to wrestle their first match. There were many ups and downs during the season. The Panthers once again hosted the MRVC con- ference tournament. All went well and they ended up placing 3rd in the tournament. The long travel to Butler was worth their while as they qualified ten wrestlers for state competition. The opening ceremony at Hearnes Arena on the MU campus sent waves of excitement and an- ticipation racing through the Oak Grove team as well as the crowd. Each one of our young men wrestled to the best of their ability, all contri- buting to the team score. When the medals were presented, the spot- light was on Matt Lehane, 6th place at 2 lbs., Billy Lewis, 2nd place at II9 lbs., John Griffin, 2nd place at l26 lbs., Mark Lehane, 3rd place at I38 lbs., Kevin Barnett, 5th place at I45 lbs., and finally for the second year in a row, Ronny Thomas, state champ at I67 lbs. Because of their efforts, the Panther team placed third in class lA-2A in the state of Missouri. The team then went on to take lst in M.R.V.C. and Districts. The team, as a whole, placed third in the State Meet, but several of the Lady Pan- thers pulled in some excellent standings. Michele Cervant shone all season, setting 5 new school records and taking first place in l00 meter hur- dles and I600 Meter Relay at State. She also brOught in a 2nd place in the 300 Meter Hurdles at State. She ended the season with 448 points and 46 medals. The freshmen learned that if they think positive, work hard, and give their best effort at all times, they can be winners and they were and still are. Since the freshmen had a l-4 season as 8th graders, they obviously exceeded most expecta- tions with their 3-2 winning season. Coach Cromer and I were very pleased with the l984 freshman team. They thought played, and won as a team. I believe that the l984 Freshman have the potential to be a championship team. Coach Brad Gaines was extreme- ly pleased by their improvements. He feels that as the season pro- gressed they played as a team, only letting two teams score against them. They gave up only two touch- downs. They look like they have great potential as Varsity players. Coach Gaines also expressed that each player was outstanding. Yet. he said that two young men, Steve Smitka and Dave Hulse, had excep- tional seasons on both offence and defence. US VOCATIONAL WORK STUDY EXTRA HELP-EXTRA GAIN Some students need extra help with studies. Mrs. Jenny Hosch pro- vides the special attention these students require to be competitive in the job market. A more intense coverage of the basics helps kids gain important learning skills and a feeling of accomplishment. Mrs. Hosch praises her stu- dents: they're really hard work- ,1 ers. wat V , , NWW e 80 1 m Wxgww . f gm f Haz Above- Matt ' Right- Freshm Bryan Fox 6n Presiden0. The lockers are wiped away of ;. memories while the memories of each and every Senior continues to linger in our hearts. The laugh- ter and joy is replaced by lonesomeness and sad- ness as May 23 comes around. Amy Smith, vale- dictorian, and Hodon Yates, salutatorian, say the last thank you's and goodbyes on behalf of the Class of '85. Their wonderful speeches brought many chuckles but left room for a few tears to follow. Now, it's time to be introduced to each of the IDS graduating seniors, as they receive their diploma, their lavendar rose, and congratulations from the administration.
