OAK No dusky wing of homing bird. Upon the walk with poised foot I stand throughout the years- Some call it all futility- And yet-my eyes are free from tears, . For in this mad and cynic world Where men quest naught except for gain, I stand for beauty swift and sure, The beauty that is seared like pain Upon the artist soul of him Whose grimy fingers fondly trace- And lightly, too-the mill, the bridge, And all the tiny trees that lace Their fronded tops across the sky. And this I know is not futility, That I was born of artist heart Which shaped the very soul of me. LEAVES APPLEBLOSSOMS THE ARTIST June is painting a picture On the canvas of the skies, With the grasses for her brushes, Dipped in the softest of dyes. 12

All's silent in the distant town, Nor step nor voice is ever heard- Across the hushed and fiushing sky 11

OAK LEAVES The earth is her palette, with colors Ta'en from her cups of dyeg She washes her brush in the ocean And lays it out to dry, While the west wind's gentle breezes Bring her glad tidings and bright, And the oriole from the orchard Trills her a melody light. June is painting a picture On the canvas of the skies, Dipping her brush in the streamlets To paint the blue grass-eyes. The White of a field of daisies Is from a fleecy cloudy The golden dales of buttercups Are akin to the sun so proud. The green of springtime's verdure Is a blending of colors rare- Of the sunlight, soft and mellow With the azure of the air. She uses the distant storm clouds In the quiet tones of brown, But the white-caps on the rivers Are stars that have fallen down. June is painting a picture On the canvas of the skies, June is painting a picture, The new world that greets our eyes. STELLA CARVELL, '4. AD ASTRA PER AASPERA Oak Grove has no classical students with higher ranks or enthusiasm than the Eighth Grade girls who began their Latin the second semester and already had a zest for Latin themes when they had studied it only two months. Prose should have no later horrors for them. The Fresh- man girls are equally fond of composition and have contributed many more stories than can be published. Latin is decidedly alive at Oak Grove. 13
