OAK LEAVES the first quaint thrill of the obligation you owe to a spirit instilled in you, the spirit of 'inobiesse oblige. Here in the hills of old New England, we all have learned-not only learned things, but we have found the meaning of comradeship, the glorious sense of good sportsmanship, the mingled love and respect of those friends, who, older than we, know more of the things we love, and who are combined friends and advisers-we have learned loyalty, and something of the finer things of life. Those of us who have gone out are realizing a bit more, steadily, exactly what is the heritage of Oak Grove-and how firm the foundation is. So, to us who have been given of the finest, there is an obligation to give the finest of ourselves. We must remember the many who have en- tered our beautiful Chapel at the foot of the hillg may We take from it something of the spirit which they have left for us, and as years go on, may we contribute something more to the fineness of our Alma Mater. BEVERLY POWELL, '27. 10

OAK No dusky wing of homing bird. Upon the walk with poised foot I stand throughout the years- Some call it all futility- And yet-my eyes are free from tears, . For in this mad and cynic world Where men quest naught except for gain, I stand for beauty swift and sure, The beauty that is seared like pain Upon the artist soul of him Whose grimy fingers fondly trace- And lightly, too-the mill, the bridge, And all the tiny trees that lace Their fronded tops across the sky. And this I know is not futility, That I was born of artist heart Which shaped the very soul of me. LEAVES APPLEBLOSSOMS THE ARTIST June is painting a picture On the canvas of the skies, With the grasses for her brushes, Dipped in the softest of dyes. 12
