OAK LEAVES the first quaint thrill of the obligation you owe to a spirit instilled in you, the spirit of 'inobiesse oblige. Here in the hills of old New England, we all have learned-not only learned things, but we have found the meaning of comradeship, the glorious sense of good sportsmanship, the mingled love and respect of those friends, who, older than we, know more of the things we love, and who are combined friends and advisers-we have learned loyalty, and something of the finer things of life. Those of us who have gone out are realizing a bit more, steadily, exactly what is the heritage of Oak Grove-and how firm the foundation is. So, to us who have been given of the finest, there is an obligation to give the finest of ourselves. We must remember the many who have en- tered our beautiful Chapel at the foot of the hillg may We take from it something of the spirit which they have left for us, and as years go on, may we contribute something more to the fineness of our Alma Mater. BEVERLY POWELL, '27. 10

OAK LEAVES who was with the Boston Symphony for ten years and for the past twelve as concert master in the Metropolitan Grand Opera. Our program was made up of a delightful variety. The noted reader, Edward Abner Thompson, of Boston, scored a complete success in his interpretation of Disraeli. Brayton Eddy of New York, naturalist and author, illustrated his fascinating lecture, The Personality of Insects, with unusual moving pictures. The Haydn Harp Duo of Brookline drew entrancing music from two giant golden harps and very sweet melodies from a quaint old Irish harp. Sherwood Eddy, internationally known lec- turer, talked to us of Ghandi and world affairs, as well as of our own prob- lems in his powerful manner. The sixth number which will be a part of our Commencement program is being held as a surprise, which will surely be a pleasant one. FORMER EDITOR WINS PRIZE We note with p1'ide that Eleanor Hubbard Rogers, '28, and erstwhile Editor of OAK a v LEAVES, has just received a rather significant honor. The press announced on May eighth that the Mary I.. Carver Prize of fifty dollars for the best orig- inal poem of merit written by a young woman of Colby College had been awarded to Eleanor Rogers, '32, for her poem Cameo, which is given the place of honor in our literary department. Cameo has the f same delicate yet intense feeling that Eleanor expressed in verse when at Oak Grove, and again we prophesy that she is a young poet whose verses deserve a place in literature. ALUMNAE GREETINGS In the little chapel at the foot of the hill, with the rippling Kennebec below, and tall, sturdy pines above, you will all be given the blessing of your Alma Mater, and sent by her to all parts of the world to represent her. When you stand there, amidst the traditions of a century, you will realize 9
