CLASS HISTORY Way back in the year 1951, with the class consisting of 40 members, we entered the new school building, as the first Freshmen. Being green freshmen we were then initiated at the hands of the Sophomores, who made it as tough on us as they possibly could get by with. Kangaroo Court took place with all of us ending up on the black list, and getting the worst tasks possible. Besides all of the rough treatment given us, the party was a huge success. We then treated them to their return party. We elected officers as follows: President, Joe Slobkog Vice-President, Johnny Courtneyg Secretary, Matt Alvarez: and Treasurer, Elmer Logan. Our room motherswere Mrs. W. Daniels and Mrs. M. Alvarez. Mrs. Poland was our Sponsor. We went to Steamboat Springs on our annual class picnic. Being Sophomores we had the traditional privilege of initiating the poor new Fresh- men. Starting the year with 27 members the class dwindled down to a mere 24 before the year was over. Class officers consisted of President, Virginia Heroldg Vice-President, Joe Slobkog Secretary, Beverly Van Wertg and Treasurer, Johnny Courtney. Our room mothers were Mrs. H. Dunckley and Mrs. R. Gilbert. Our sponsor was Mr. Newy. The scene of our class picnic was Glenwood Springs where we enjoyed swimming and numerous other things. In the year 1953 we traveled in high honor being Juniors. We held our total of 26 members throughout the year. This year we elected President, Elwin Powellg Vice- President, Virginia I-leroldg Secretary, Theora Dunckleyg Treasurer, Margaret Cedillo. Our room mothers were Mrs. R. Gilbert and Mrs. Alvarez. Sponsoring our class were Mr. Marconeri, Mr. Newby and Mr. Love. Our money making projects were selling Christmas cardsg hot dogs, pop, coffee and etc. at football games, and sponsoring several dances after football and basketball games. Our theme for decorating the gym was Moonlight and Roses. Though the decorating was a lot of hard work we enjoyed every bit of it. Our Junior play was Angels of Red Canyon. The cast was chosen and put to work right away learning their lines and etc. It was a big success thus rewarding us for all the work put into it. We went to Pleasant Valley, then to Steamboat Springs for our annual class picnic. This being our Senior year we elected President, Elwin Powellg Vice-President, Mario Karzong Secretary, Theora Dunckleyg Treasurer, Joe Slobko. Our Sponsors were Mrs. Long and Mr.Newby. Our room mothers were Mrs. R. Gilbert and Mrs. M. Alvarez. We are looking forward to the prom and banquet to be given to us by the Juniors. We are also looking forward to our Senior Play to be given in the Spring. During the four years in high school the Senior Class has been one of the most outstanding classes in all high school activities. Several of our members belonged to the band, glee club, and also several of the boys playing basketball and football. Taking a summary of our members we find that two of our class members have been cheerleaders for two and three years. Of the boys, five played on first string basketball in their Junior year and four are playing on the first string this year. Seven of our boys were on first string in football. During our Freshmen and Sophomore qears we chalked up the victory over the other classes as being champions of the inter-class tourney. Inter-class tournaments in our Senior and Junior years were not held because our class proved to be too much competition to the other classes because of years of playing basketball to- gether. We wind up our four years in high school feeling successful and prepared for the future, ,S an o S! 'S v lr e ,SM it ln.: 3':w el: in-X 'R-:'TovoiX gif? Kc f lr vs o5e.v's Ucwclv PM-'d,,,,... The following weeks were spent in choosing their class rings, for which they had been waiting since Freshman days, and selecting Junior class play. They finally chose Damsels in Distress, a three-act comedy. The cast included Betty Buntin, Carol Herold, Douglas Parker, Charles Reese, Jackie Gabossi, Rosalie Long, Hayden Phillips, Sue Giberson, Lela Rowley, Roy Anderson, Reggie Steele, and Richard Villa. Thanks to Mr. Brock, the director, the cast was ready to give the play on the 12th of November. It was a huge success and added a great sum of money to the class treasury. After the play they were entertained at a party given by Misslngalls, the sponsor, and the room-mothers Mrs. Reese and Mrs. Murray. With the play finished, other things came up which included the Juniors, such as All-Valley Band, the speech meet at Steamboat, the Christmas program, dances after the games, and as- semblies. Many ofthe Junior boys went out for basketball and football. Everyone was proud to have Richard Villa made All-Conference center in football, and to have Richard Borroel, Hayden Phillips, Joe Nieto, and John Alvarez on the first ten in basketball. Almost all of the Junior girls were in Pep Club and Jackie Gabossi was again named Cheerleader. The 5th and 7th of May were set aside for the Junior and Senior prom and banquet. The banquet, held in the beautifully decorated high school gym, was greatly enjoyed by everyone. A large crowd attended the prom where they danced to the music of Emmert Curran. The last event of a successful and fun-filled year was the annual picnic. sz ,VL Lx X-.L ra' QF UQMEYPQW 525:50 agp EX e Qiv mknih dl? ,X SNSR uolcpxf QQ 0c..x1h11-h,S '3,?e,'HQ John Alvarez Reggie Steele Carol Lee Baer Richard Borrel Q 6 X .. 3 ab J' , 1 5 . xy A X iw Ronnie Comacho George Crumpton Jackie Gabossi Sue Giberson Darlene Guire Henry Murray S .is f. 5 R xlfg li S K 1 i Arnetta Olson Alberta Martinez Robert Meach A A fi. In the first game of the season Oak Creek met Superior on the local field. The Miners drew first blood, but Superior retaliated in time to bring the final score to a 7 - 7 tie. The next week the Miners won two non-conference games defeating Walden 25 to 0 and downing Granby 27 - 0. After three non-conference wins the Miners went on to win their first league tussle, beating their traditional rivals the Steamboat Sailors, 32 to 6. A record crowd watched the local boys score five successive touchdowns, while the visitors had trouble moving the ball until the final quarter when a do or die effort netted them their single score. The tables turned on Oak Creek in their next league game as they fell be- neath the drive of the Meeker Cowboys. In a furious rainstorm the two teams battled to a stand still until the final quarter when the Cowboys' final drives ended in success. After their only defeat the Miners went on to win another non-conference game, downing Kremmling 13 to 6. The highlight of the season came when the underdog Miners came back in the final quarter to defeat a favored Hayden team. A tense group of Oak Creek fans watched as the Miners, with seconds remaining, won the game on a 20 yard touchdown pass. The last game of the season was easily won by Oak Creek, as they downed Rangely 18 to 0. Having played eight games, the Min- ers record showed six wins, one tie and one loss. By virtue of their fine record the local boys placed second in league standings. best they ,5Po'nsor: The. ,S'tQ.'tSoh N No picture available: A. VALDEZ R. Halfback J. SLOBKO Quarterback G. HIXON R.
