' , -r .W-F fffv Q ff :f A ,. , tn, ' ' HISTORY OF TH E ss of:-:ARE DD-8895 USS O'HARE proudly bears the name of one of the Navy's most famous fighting men, LCDR Edward Henry Butch O'HARE, Butch graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1937 and won his Navy Wings in May 1940. For his actions on February 20, 1943, in shooting down five Japanese aircraft in one flight, he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. For subse- quent deeds of heroism, he was awarded the Navy Cross and the Distinguished Flying Cross with Gold Star. LCDR O'HARE was reported missing in action on 27 November 1944 while engaged in flight operations in support of the attack on Tarawa. O'HARE was commissioned on 29 Nov- ember 1945. She is a Gearing Class destroy- er having a length of 390 ft., a width of 40 feet and displacing 3,400 tons. An extensive modernization, completed in 1963, was de- signed to provide her with the latest anti- submarine detection and attack systems while still retaining anti-air and anti-surface gun- nery. The log of O'HARE shows many long cruises and commendatory acts during her years of commissioned service. She earned the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal in 1961 and 1965 and the Vietnam Service Medal in 1966. This ship is but a small part of the two hundred ships that make up the Atlantic Fleet Cruiser-Destroyer Force. She is a member of Destroyer ,Squadron 32, the Anywhere- Anytime squadron, and is the flagship for Commander Destroyer Division 322. Her crew is representative of the United States ...men from all sections of the country... constantly training and standing ready to protect the democratic way of life and to go to the aid of allied nations threatened with aggression. O'HARE is a proud ship, and for many reasons--because of her namesake, her his- tory, and because of the fine officers and men who serve aboard. -.,- -A--H l
