DEDICATION This year marks the twochundredth anniversary of the birth of Br. Edmund Ignatius Rice, Founder and First Superior General of the Christian Brothers of Ireland. In view of the fact that in October of last year, the Holy See appointed the Archbishop of Dublin to conduct the preliminary steps in the cause of his beatification and canonization, it seems quite appropriate to dedicate the Olympian ’62 to the memory of this saintly Founder and to his zealous followers who conduct schools and coMeges in many parts of the world. The ideals, motives, and means which make every activity of the Brothers so admirable and eminently successful are symbolized and synthesized in the Crest of the Congregation which appears on the cover of each annual. The star in the Crest is a reminder that those who instruct many unto justice shall shine as stars for all etermity. The star shining in the darkness is regarded as a symbol of enlightenment and instruction, the services which the Church re- quires from the Brothers on behalf of the youth of the flock; and since the instruc- tion of the Religious Teacher should be primarily of Christ and of him crucified, the star is set upon the Cross, the source and inspiration of our Faith, and the instrument of our Redemption. The Cross, with its circle, the symbol of etemity, and its traceries, are essentially Celtic in design. The outer circle bears the title, Brothers of the Christian Schools of Ireland, since Ireland was the natal place of the Congregation. The open book placed on top of the outer circle indi- cates that the aim of the Brothers as an educational organization is to impart not only religious but also secular instruction to their pupils. The letters displayed on the open page, likewise the words Facere et Docere further remind the Brothers of their obligation of imparting knowledge of God to their charges. Finally, there is the Cross, the symbol of Faith; and the Star, the emblem of Hope, and of Mary, Star of the Sea, under whose protection the Congregation of the Christian Brothers was founded. To the memory of the Venerable Brother Rice and to the members of his Congregation everywhere throughout the world, we, the Senior Class of O'Dea High School, proudly and respectfully dedicate this annual.
