WASHINGTON His Holiness POPE JOHN XXIII The Holy Father is the Supreme Ruler of the Catholic world, the Valiant Champion of Etemal Truth, the Defender of the Rights of Man, the Rallying Point of the Forces of Decency and Justice. His Excellency THE MOST REVEREND THOMAS ARTHUR CONNOLLY, D.D., J.C.D. Archbishop of Seattle June 11, 1926, Ordained, San Francisco, Califomia August 24, 1939, Consecrated Auxiliary Bishop of San Francisco February 28, 1948, Appointed Coadjutor Bishop of Seattle May 19, 1950, Succeeded to the See as Fifth Bishop of Seattle June 23, 1951, Appointed First Archbishop of Seattle His Excellency THE MOST REVEREND THOMAS EDWARD GILL, D.D. Auxiliary Bishop of Seattle June 10, 1933, Ordained, San Francisco, Califomia February 2, 1955, Appointed Pastor St. James Cathedral May 31, 1956, Consecrated Auxiliary Bishop of Seattle os = or DEDICATION This year marks the twochundredth anniversary of the birth of Br. Edmund Ignatius Rice, Founder and First Superior General of the Christian Brothers of Ireland. In view of the fact that in October of last year, the Holy See appointed the Archbishop of Dublin to conduct the preliminary steps in the cause of his beatification and canonization, it seems quite appropriate to dedicate the Olympian ’62 to the memory of this saintly Founder and to his zealous followers who conduct schools and coMeges in many parts of the world. The ideals, motives, and means which make every activity of the Brothers so admirable and eminently successful are symbolized and synthesized in the Crest of the Congregation which appears on the cover of each annual. The star in the Crest is a reminder that those who instruct many unto justice shall shine as stars for all etermity. The star shining in the darkness is regarded as a symbol of enlightenment and instruction, the services which the Church re- quires from the Brothers on behalf of the youth of the flock; and since the instruc- tion of the Religious Teacher should be primarily of Christ and of him crucified, the star is set upon the Cross, the source and inspiration of our Faith, and the instrument of our Redemption. The Cross, with its circle, the symbol of etemity, and its traceries, are essentially Celtic in design. The outer circle bears the title, Brothers of the Christian Schools of Ireland, since Ireland was the natal place of the Congregation. The open book placed on top of the outer circle indi- cates that the aim of the Brothers as an educational organization is to impart not only religious but also secular instruction to their pupils. The letters displayed on the open page, likewise the words Facere et Docere further remind the Brothers of their obligation of imparting knowledge of God to their charges. Finally, there is the Cross, the symbol of Faith; and the Star, the emblem of Hope, and of Mary, Star of the Sea, under whose protection the Congregation of the Christian Brothers was founded. To the memory of the Venerable Brother Rice and to the members of his Congregation everywhere throughout the world, we, the Senior Class of O'Dea High School, proudly and respectfully dedicate this annual. VENERABLE BROTHER EDMUND I. RICE Founder of the Christian Brothers of Ireland “If we work upon marble, it will perish; if on brass, time will efface it; if we rear temples, they will crumble into dust; but if we work upon immortal minas, and imbue them with principles, with the just fear of God and love of neighbor, we engrave on those tablets something that will brighten to all eternity.” — Daniel Webster ADMINISTRATION BROTHER F. M. POPISH Principal, O’Dea High School Two years ago Br. Popish assumed the duties of Principal at O’Dea High School. Since that time he has performed his duties efficiently. In addition to his duties as Principal, Brother Popish also teaches Senior Religion. Realizing the necessity for young men to develop their bodies as well as their minds, Bro. Popish advocates an adequate athletics program. He is also the staunchest back- er our team has. Wher spring arrives, Br. Popish can usually find time to add a round of golf to his already very busy schedule. The Class of ’62 sincerely hopes that many more classes will grad- uate from O’Dea High School and carry with them the ideals that Br. Popish and the rest of the Faculty at O’Dea has given to our Class. ADMINISTRATION BROTHER M. G. BURKE Brother Burke who is now fifty-three years in the Brotherhood still teaches. He is also responsible for collecting tuition and is Moderator of the Mothers’ Club. Brother takes a keen interest in our sports program and can be found at all our games. He likes to play an oc- casional game of golf when the weather and his health condition permit. The students very much appreciate his inter- est in all their activities, and hope he will remain many more years at O'Dea. BROTHER M. G. BURKE Vice-Principal, School Treasurer, Moderator of Mothers’ Club, Religion, World History. The Treasurer’s Office MRS. KIRSCHNER Mrs. Kirschner has been with us for the past four years as Secretary and Regy istrar. Before her advent to O’Dea, Mrs. Kirschner as- sisted at the Cathedral Grade School where her work and worth were appreciated by MRS. R. H. KIRSCHNER Secretary and Registrar. Office of the Secretary Registrar the Clergy and the good Sisters alike. We are very fortunate to have the inval- uable services of Mrs. Kirschner at O’Dea, and we trust she may find it con- venient to remain at the school for many years to come. FACULTY BROTHER J. J. WAYNE CARTER (Se nior Layouts) ROBERT MONTCALM (Activities Section) THE YEARBOOK STAFF The Senior and Junior Students on the Annual Staff have once again given the school a Yearbook com- parable to any other previous one. In some respects it differs from previous productions in order to dis- play the variety of creative ability that can be achieved in composing a yearbook. The theme is timely, and the division pages are aimed at evok- ing human interests connected with our city and school. Natural color pictures have been used once again, but in a way that is altogether different in — SS rf WM” thd Sd 3 . eee? ee design and setting. The work of the entire staff entailed hours of difficult planning, but it was all performed very cheerfully and in that family spirit typical of the groups. In the limited time at their disposal each afternoon, the Editor, ‘William Kay, and his wonderfully co-operative associates en- deavoured to capture in retrospect the highlights of the year just ending. They feel justly elated in the result, and they hope that you, the readers, will fully appreciate the genuine happiness they may have added to your school life at O’Dea. 70 NON pm MICHAEL PAGAN (Copy and Editing) JAMES McCOY (Layout Manager) JUNIOR YEARBOOK S TAFE FRONT ROW: E. The team, composed largely of Juniors and Sophomores, had only a few Seniors on hand to help out. Special credit should go to our linemen. Owing to injuries, many of these fellows played virtually every minute during the latter part of the season. The highlight of the season was a 6-6 tie with Seattle Prep, a feat not accom- plished at O’Dea in many a year. Coach Gilmore hopes that his Sophomores will come through next year and give us a winning season. Team had a season record of 10 wins and 10 losses, and thus maintained Coach Miller’s record of never having had a los- ing season in J.V. sport while he has been at O’Dea. Stressing team play and a tough defense, the young “‘Irish’’ fought through a rugged schedule and made the games always close even in de- feat. Five of their 10 losses were by one point, and these losses came in overtime games. J« V. BASKETBALL M. Coolen, J. Mylet, W. Dick, R. Mosqueda, W. Ambrose, M. Berridge, M. Sands, J. Kiefer, M. Although no | individual player stood out | above the others, the squad had tremendous potential. This augurs a much brighter future for O’Dea Basketball, Brother Farrell was the Team Coach.
