JOHN LATERAN This picture shows the cathedral Church of the Pope in Rome. It ranks higher than any other Roman Catholic church in the world. In 312 the Emperor Constantine presented it to the Catholic Church. Five general councils, known as Lateran Councils, have been held there. The present Lateran Palace, which adjoins the church, was built about 1580. It served as the residence of the Popes until their court was transferred to Avignon, France. After their return to Rome, the Popes lived at the Vatican. Many Popes, including Leo XIII, lie buried in the Lateran. ye 3 ae His Excellenc THE MOST REVEREND THOMAS A. CONNOLLY, D.D., J.C. D. Thus do we span a period in our lives which for the most of us has been replete with happy days and cherished memories. Thus do we view in retrospect our contact with our teachers. Many are the thoughts which pass through our minds at this time. There are memories of classroom, social, and campus life; memories of solid, sound advice; memories of justified criticism and hard-earned praise; memories of complete and unselfish sacrifice. These are the thoughts which, if adequately expressed, would leave our human language dumb. To you, our devoted teachers, we dedicate this issue of the OLYMPIAN with the hope that the loyalty we, as Alumni, show our school and its competent teachers may be commensurate to the solid start in life which we have been given. Cristofaro, have ended another successful year. The purpose of the Mothers’ Club is to aid the students and the school. To this end the club has organized itself into small groups such as the Telephone Committee which are quite effective in furthering the objectives of the organization. The work of the Mothers’ Club aids financially the Yearbook, the Newspaper, the Library, the Debate Club, the Physical Education Department, and other such functions of the school. A unique event with the club is the FASHION SHOW which was held this year at the Bon Marche in the Cascade Room. The Annual Card Party at the Norselander was eminently successful once more. Traditional is the Pot Luck Dinner, no less a treat than the Spaghetti Dinner which the Mothers sponsor. To indicate their abiding appreciation of the work of the Brothers, the Mothers hold the Christmas Party each year in the school hall. It is gratifying to all club members to realize the great good they do annually for their fellowmen. As each annual report is con- CARD PARTY OFFICERS cluded, the Mothers may well rejoice in the Mrs. J. Smith Mrs. A. Cristofaro achievement of their philanthropical mission. They are, indeed, the munificent benefactors of the school. Mr. Walsh had been one of the key men in the club and had held the office of Treasurer ever since the re-organi- zation of thé association by Br. Breen. To the various meetings Mr. Walsh brought a wealth of ripe experience which was greatly appreciated by his fellow-workers. OH! 33 26 27 COACH PAUL MAGUIRE VARSITY FOOTBALL Led by a talented group of seniors, our Foot- ball Squad certainly lived up to the team’s motto of ‘‘giving 200% effort.’’ Had the team not been hampered by injuries and the loss of some returning lettermen, the record would have been much better than 4-5-1. It was the lack of depth that eventually wore down our “Fighting Irish’? Team of which the school is justifiably proud. The highlight of the season was a 7-6 victory over Blanchet by our warriors who had never been able to defeat the ‘‘Braves.’’ Led by Charlie Maxie the “‘Irish’’ came from behind to win the thriller. Despite the limitations of time the Staff did a remarkable job of editing this review of a chapter in the history of the school. Work of editing the average yearbook adds to about one thousand hours. It is hoped that the unselfish efforts of the Staff will be amply recom- pensed by this issue of the Olympian. . The work entailed was greatly lessened by the cooperation of The Faculty and Student Body, Mr. Charles J. Heib, Mr. R. L. Pedersen of Roberts Studio, Mr. Jim Palm who represented the American Yearbook Company, and last but not least the O’Dea Mothers’ Club.
