Lourdes is unique in the number of its pilgrims, in the intensity of its scenes of devotion, and in the efficacy of its intercessary power. This year marks the hundredth anniversary of the Flpparitions of our Blessed Lady to Bernadette Soubirous. Between February the eleventh and july the sixteenth of the year 1858, this poor, illiterate girl saw and spoke to the Lady on eighteen different occasions. The Lady appeared so beautiful that the art of man could not reproduce her likeness, nor could anything dim or efface the impression She made on Bernadette. Els we, the Senior Students of O'Dea High School, dedicate this Hnnual to our Blessed Mother, we express the hope that one day we, like Bernadette, may gaze forever on that beauty so impressive, and enjoy the company of One whose tenderness and love span the years of time, and transcend the bounds of space. THE GROTIO THE BHSILICH Dhysical education that strengthens the energies of the bodyg intellecf tual education that develops and enf riches the resources of the rnindg above all, moral and religious educaf tion that enlightens and guides the the intellect, forms and strengthens the will, trains and sanctifies the character and thus gives to the image of God a resemblance to the divine prototype which renders it worthy of dwelling in the eternal mansions. fDope Dius XII Integral Formation ofthe Eldolescent , If His Holiness, Pope Pius XII 4 5 'fx 4: V Q , Q . 1. ..,. -1 WE Q, 9 f M- T x Mx kr , it , ,af 3' X . xx v N. MARSH Father Marsh is also a native of Seattle. ln his extreme youth he attended St. Alphonsus Grade School, and in due course he registered at O'Dea High School as a Freshman. He remained in the school from 1946 until 1949. lt was during these formative years that the future priest took an active part in the two school publications, The Chimes and The Olympian, thus showing his literary and artistic ability. Realizing that he had a priestly vocation he left O'Dea to continue his studies first at Mater Dolorosa Seminary and later at St. Edward's Seminary. The newly ordained priest read his First Mass at St. Alphonsus Church where years before he had first become a Member of the Mystical Body of Christ. The Faculty and Students of O'Dea wish Fr. Marsh many fruitful years in the service of the Lord. 58 REV. DON PIRO On February 7, 1932 in the city by the sea, Fr. Piro was born. His youthful years were spent in Seattle, Lomita, Hollywood, California, Denver, Colorado and Portland, Oregon. Returning to Seattle, he attended St. Margaret's Grade School and in 1946 he was enrolled as a student at O'Dea High School. There he was an Honor Student for all four years. Without im- paring his intellectual progress, he took a very active part in school games. The records show that during his academic courses he played football, basketball, and baseball and was privileged to represent O'Dea in the All- American Boy Game at Sicks Stadium. In recognition of his athletic prowess, Santa Clara awarded him a Scholarship for Baseball. As time went on, he attended Seattle University and Portland University and termi- nated his athletic career by leading Portland University in hitting. ln 1952 Fr. Piro entered St. Edward's Seminary where he remained until his ordination this year. The Brothers and boys at O'Dea join in extending to Fr. Piro their sincerest con- gratulations and best wishes for the future. mdfv Urganization I . bf i, , ,V I I 1 . I M Q Q' ' l s Q I V, bn 7' I :gl I 4 Q . ,Q -ay ' Dt' ' b - 3,4 1, . The Irish welcomed the new football coach, Paul McGuire, with a rousing 34 - 13 victory over St. Martin's in the first game of the season, however, the maroon and gold weren't able to return to the victory trail as they met defeat at Q the hands of their next seven opponents. The Irish then closed out the season by measuring Bellarmine 21 ' 13. The team deserves hearty congratulations for a hard fought season. Although they were plagued by injuries, the Irish were always able to give a creditable account of themselves. Great expec- tations are held for next year as a number of promising candidates made appearances this year. Additional help next year is expected from the upcoming Freshman Team, which enjoyed a season record of six wins and no losses. SEASON RECORD O'Dea 34 . . . St. Martin's 12 O'Dea 16 . . Courage. 0'DEA BOOSTE RS' CLUB The O'Dea Boosters' Club, which was re-organized three years ago, has for its objective the promotion of the character and athletic development of O' Dea. Membership is composed of all men interested in that objec- tive. The major activity of the year was the promotion of the annual car raffle which culminated in the Spring Carnival held at the K. of C. Hall. Referring to the signal success of the Spring Car- nival, Mr. J. Michael Clpresidentl remarked: llThe support given to O'Dea bythe Boosters'Club was enhanced through the outstand- ing co-operation of the O'Dea Faculty and Students, to them we owe sincere thanks. - Phil MCCluskey LETTERMAN S DINNER COMMITTEE Left to Right: Messrs. M. Colasurdo, A. Cantalini, F. Arena e8 DEA MOTHERS' CLUB The mothers of the O'Dea boys have formed a club whereby throughout each successive year they endeavor to raise funds to supplement full educational funds for their boys. The means employed to raise these funds are the dues col- lected from each member of the club, an annual Card Party that is city wide, luncheons, dinners, and last, but not least, a rummage sale. Without their work many of the extras that the boys receive would be impossible to obtain. By dint of hard work on the part of all the mothers work- ing as a unit, their goal is usually attained. Some of the expenses that they help to defray are the Graduation Honor Diplomas, the School Paper, the School Band, the Library Fund, the Annual, the Senior Group Picture, and the yearly tuition for three deserving students. When the boys reach their Senior Year, the mothers aid them in paying for the Baccalaurate Mass and the Senior Communion Breakfeast. ln a vvord there are many activities that would have to be either curtailed or altogether omitted were it not for the existence of the O'Dea Mothers' Club. Mothers who wish to have their boys enjoy their formative years at O'Dea should be active mem- bers of the O'Dea Mothers' Club. By working in whatever way they find most practical, they will enable the club to fulfil its main objective: the furthering of the educational development of their sons. -ivlrs. J. Michael .
