Murray, a coach who knows how to build and maintain a team, has, in addition to a great sense of humor, a cheerful, smiling per- sonality. The football squad, though scrappy and spirited, had too great a handicap in the laclc of weight and experience. In both baseball and basketball Murray's teams turned in victorious seasons. VARSITY FOOTBALL In September one hundred and forty boys answered Coach Healyls call for players. The opening game of the season came only eight days later and Bremerton handed us our hrst defeat. The Irish played eight other games, but for many reasons, such as injuries, lack of weight and lack of experience, they completed the season without winning a game. O'Dea didn't have much of a chance to show their offensive ability this year but they had lots of practice at defense. Some of the outstanding defensive players were Bob I-Iardy, Jim Ross and Frank Nlinalia, who gave all to stop an onrushing foe. From the viewpoint of percentages the record of the past season is not impressive. In fact, a season with no win in nine attempts is generally classified as disastrous. Yet, despite the loss of every contest the members of the team fought every game to the final whistle regardless of the odds against them. The 0'Dea followers showed themselves true sports in giving their support to the team throughout the season. They are indeed to be congratulated and thanlced. Top row: R. Lolich, K. Koin, J. Mr. Ambrose and his assistants, Mr. Shetinian, Brother Neylon and Brother Maloney, de- serve much credit for their fine work in building a win- ning team. The Irish showed speed and power in every game and this indicates might for O'Dea teams in the future. They were handed their only two defeats of the season by Kent, 13-ll, and by Roosevelt, 6-O. While losing these two they showed their might by rallying over Franklin 18-0, Garfield 6-O, Cleveland 12-0, Lakeside Z6-0, St. Martinis Z6-0, Bellarmine 12-0, and, most important, the decisive victory over Prep by a 30-0 score in their best game of the season. However. the task of piecing together a representative team for the Irish's pursuits in the field of baseball was greatly lessened by the return of five lettermen from last season. This team, when once assembled, progressed rapidly, and to date the Irish are undefeated and are headed for what looks like another banner year for 0'Dea. Coach Healy boasts one of the best defensive clubs in the state, having a veteran all-letterman infield. Bob McDonald handles the first base job effectively, while four-year-letterman Bob Fieser holds down the Hhot cornerf, Todd Reeder and Dick Naish make an excellent dou- ble-play combination, playing second base and shortstop, respectively. Ready to relieve them are Don Hoagland and George Caasi, up and com- ing Juniors. Wfithout any lettermen returning in the out- held, the garden berths were wide open, with Ron Johnson, Dan Ryan and George Forrest winning the starting positions. Ready to relieve them, if necessity arrives, are Don Piro and Sam Mezicli, two Sophomores who show a lot of promise. The catching department was taken care of by experienced maskinan, Bill Nloran of last year's aggregation and Frank Nliller, a heavy- hitting Sophomore. OiDea's pitching chores are handled mainly by jim Ross and Bob Fieser. Ross is the only letterman pitcher returning. Ron lVluir, Gene Kord and Bill Russel, all inexperienced but hopeful throwers, are slated to see action this year. As for next year, the Irish's future looks rosy with eight members of the forty-eight squad returning to look for greater laurels.
