44 Social Studies Promotes Individual Responsibility Social Studies should help an individual become more aware of the world around him. It should cause him to develop a caring, helpful atti- tude toward others. Hopefully, it teaches the per- son to be a responsible and respectable person. We teach a student to work well in a group, so he can function successfully as a member of the com- munity. 46 Key to Future . . . Mathematics Basically mathematics is the study and application of ideas related to counting. Counting in some form is used as a reference of location in time and space or in matters of 'how much' or 'how many', and when used in compari- son, might even convey a message of 'how good' or 'how well.' Ten years from now someone may be looking at the clock, counting change for a dollar, or designing an electron proiector for surgery of the nervous sys- tem. Where you stop in the study of mathematics may determine which of these is you.
