Merchant Mnrimi Academy in August 1955. was commis- sioned :ln Ensign, His first sen service was in USS MATHEW QAKADGD as Navigator Captain GELKE was in the inactive reserve from 1957 to 1960 during which time he was employed as Merchant Marine Deck Officer and later as an analyst with the office of Naval lnlivlligerrce. Subsequent sea tours included duty as First Livulienant in USS OKANOGAN QAPA 2201, Weapons Officer and later Executive Officer in USS 0'8ANNON QDO 4501, Weapons Officer in USS TOPEKA QCLG 81.
