Doyle, Jr. was born in Boston, Massachusetts on 27 March 1925. He attended the U. S. Naval Academy and was graduated and commissioned an Ensign on 9 June 1946. Vice Admiral Doyle's early career involved extensive sen duty in cruiser, destroyer and mine forces including minesweeper and destroyer commands. Ashore he served as Aide and Flag Lieutenant to Commander in Chief, U. S. Pacific Fleet and two tours on the staff of the Judge Advocate General, receiving a Juris Doctor degree from George Washington University Law School in 1953. Selected for the Navy's surface nuclear power program in 196-1, Vice Admiral Doyle commanded USS BAlNBRlDGl'l QDLGN 25l, one of the Navy's first nuclear-powered surface combatants, for over four years from 1966 to 1970. In 1971, Vice Admiral Doyle was selected for flag runk and following duty on the JCS staff, returned to sea in 1973. taking command of Cruiser-Destroyer Group TWELVE. While deployed to the Mediterranean on this tour, he Served 05 Commander Attack Carrier Strike Group TWO embarked in USS FORRESTAL CCV-591. In August 1974, he took Command of the lf. S. Third Fleet in Pearl Harbor where he served until assuming his present duty as Deputy Chief of Naval OPCTZUOM tSurface Warfare! on 1 September 1975. Vice Admiral Doyle has been awarded the DistingUiBh0d Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with gold star in lieu of second award and the Bronze Star as well as various campaign and service medals. He is married to the former Jeannette B- Blair of Oakland, California. The Doyles have three children. Kathleen Cwlrs. Michael Watsonl, who resides in Houston, Texas, James H.. II and Anne J. Doyle.
