O'BRIEN as a member of Destroyer Division 232 sailed from Long Beach, California, for Hawaii on 4 November 1966 where the ships of Anti-Submarine Warfare Group One gathered for a ten day Operational Readiness Exercise. Following a brief in-port period in Pearl Harbor, O'BRIEN with USS BENNINGTON QCVA-205, USS EVERSOLE fDD789J, USS A. A. CUNNINGHAM fDD752y, USS BENNER fDD8O'7J, USS EPPERSON fDD445l, and USS BAUER fDE- 10255 headed west to jointhe Seventh Fleet for duties which included Taiwan Patrolg naval gunfire support, Operation Sea Dragon, and TF '77 carrier operations.
