I 9 1900 - 1909 i THE TORPEDO BOAT O'BRIEN IN PROCESS OF CONSTRUCTION The picture above shows the torpedo boat O'BRIEN in process of construction at the Crescent Shipyard, Elizabethport, New Jersey. The O'BRIEN is 175 feet in length, 17 feet beam, and draws 4 1X2 feet of water. She has a guaranteed speed of twenty- six knots an hour. She carries three torpedo launch- ing tubes and three rapid-fire guns. The engines are triple expansion, with four cylinders--18, 27, 27 U2 The FAMILY O'BRIE and 27 1X2 inches diameter by 18 inches stroke, using steam at 250 pounds pressure. Her engines are much larger than those in any of the other vessels of her class. Steel has been used whenever possible, and when wood has been used it has been electrically treated so as to make it fire-proof.
