In June of 1775, JEREMIAH O'BRIEN and his five brothers won fame when they led the townsmen of Machias, Maine, who captured HMS MARGARETTA, the first British warship to strike her colors to an American on the Atlantic Seaboard. In 1900, the Secretary of the Navy named Torpedo Boat 30 as the first USS O'BRIEN. In 1914, the name O'BRIEN was carried on by DD51. When placed out of commission in 1922 she had compiled an honorable record as a convoy escort and as an ASW ship during the First World War. Not until 1939, was a new successor commissioned. DD415 served in the Atlantic Fleet until early 1942 when she was ordered to the Pacific theater. In September of that year while operating with USS HGRNET and USS WASP Southeast of the Solomons, DD415 was attacked by the same Japanese submarines which sank WASP and damaged USS NORTH CAROLINA, Immediately following the attack it did not appear that the torpedo hit had made O'BRIEN unseaworthy. Temporary repairs were made and DD415 sailed for home. Five days and 2,800 miles from the point where she was hit, O'BRIEN sank. All hands were rescued before the ship went down, Plans were drawn for a new 0'BRIEN almost immediately. Commissioned at Boston on 25 February 1944, DD725 saw her first action at the D day landings at Normandy and the bom- bardment of Cherbourg, Hit by Nazi shore batteries she returned home for repairs. Following a brief period in Boston, O'BRIEN was ordered to the Pacific, and there was twice hit by Japanese suicide planes. In 1947, the ship was placed in the reserve fleet, but reactivated following the outbreak of the Korean War. During the Korean action, Radio Peiping reported O'BRIEN sunk by the North Koreans, in fact, she had only been sprayed with shrapnel. O'BRIEN has twice seen action in Viet Nam commencing in November of 1965. I Ll If it T 3 Q Tw H ,N NL 1 E . Best ,M F! L fi 1 'fm . ,L a FA , . The O'BRIEN is 175 feet in length, 17 feet beam, and draws 4 1X2 feet of water. She has a guaranteed speed of twenty- six knots an hour. She carries three torpedo launch- ing tubes and three rapid-fire guns. The engines are triple expansion, with four cylinders--18, 27, 27 U2 The FAMILY O'BRIE and 27 1X2 inches diameter by 18 inches stroke, using steam at 250 pounds pressure. Her engines are much larger than those in any of the other vessels of her class. Steel has been used whenever possible, and when wood has been used it has been electrically treated so as to make it fire-proof. The piston-rods, shafts, connecting-rods and working parts are of nickle steel. r 1 3 i ,V 1 1 L li 'f lv' A E t 3 if , - 4 F 3 if ' 3 1. , xi , - ,i 1 ' ,- fi g , U ' ' '- ' . i W I i E 4 ' ' , 5 3 , 7 Q V It 8 , , E 4, , a ix '- -' ,- s 0 ea :mga . 1 -1 1939 - 1942 '-1 ,WL '43-'Vf 1 9 1 4 - 1 9 2 2 I7 M911 ,,4r . Shipmcites The first ship a man ever sails on will always be his shipfl no matter what other vessels he may subsequently serve aboard. It is an unwritten rule of the sea that you love your first ship-there is always something about her that other . ships don't h a v e - .gf 0 ' A some voodoo that W: 190 draws you to her like 9 a wandering prodigal 6 ai' to his mother. , jf, You may curseher :ff and call her a tub or a , iff - 4' 2,531 rotten can while you ' O ,,.7,f are aboard her, but when you walk across her gangplank for the 1 1 Q55 last time as a member C , -gl. 'jg' of her crewfyou will -i1' P r'- ' be hit with an instantaneous attack of nostalgia. My first love is USS O'Brien, DD-725, they ship I spent a summer cruise aboard as an NROTC midshipman in 1963. O'Brien w'll 1 always have my loyalty for aboard her I learned about comradeship, loyalty, and human capabilities and weaknesses. Aboard her, I learned how to work like a maniac and how to have a good time, too. I learned about men and the sea I stood on her bridge during a memorable cruis e to ilaska and felt the brisk cold blasts of the r t. . . c ic chilling me to the bone. I learned that there was comfort in a good hot cu f ' p o coffee in her galley and that officers qs 'A By Pete Chronis were people and so were enlisted men. Aboard O'Brien, there was a fierce loyalty to the ship herself-nobody could knock O'Brien-it would have been suicide. There were memories, too of sitting in her second division berthing spaces and listening to a sailor playing a guitar, on singing folk songs on her, helicopterr deck - when the weather permitted. The naval career is a forgotten ambition now and the cruise is something to cherish. The O'Brien, however, is still my ship. B I saw her name in print-in -a column by ob Hope. My heart leaped until I read on, learning that she had been hit by North Vietnam- ese . . . coastal batter1es,.k1ll1ng two of her crew. ' I probably don't know the men who were killed-crews are rotated in the Navy every S0 many years-but I do know 0iBrien, and her loss of two u men brings her sorrow. It bF1l1gS S0rrpw for me, too, to know that she had been hit by shellfire at the cost of human ie. I will remember O'Brien the next time I see a group of bearded ' pickets protesting Vietnam -or more accurat l ' ey! I id .
