Cohen. Helen dedicated thirty- six years of her life to the teaching of English. Des- pite the fact that the philosophy of education was ever-changing, Helen believed in teaching the basics of English. It was more important ,tp1Helen that her students be prepared for life and she felt that she could best help them by adhering to the fundamentals of the English language. Her ,greatest sense of accomplishment was obtained by having her former students succeed in whatever they at- tempted. In retrospect, her former students are grateful to have been assigned to her class. Al- though she l1as departed from our midst, her philo- sophy and memory will live on at the 0'Maley School. ' - Ode to Helen H Helen. She wasn't just an ordinary teacher. In the twenty five years of our friendship She grew in stature For she possessed that extra attribute Which placed her in that elite group known as Master Teacher Extraordinaire. I remember well her English Philosophy For it was stick to the basics And spelling always counts She was a worker as her students will testify And as the years went by They were grateful for her steadfastness In teaching the basics. Helen's lips were set firm. Her eyes would glare In trying to buildga reputation, - To save a Professors fname. A When they will ruerliheg day. And there it will stay. When all the rage was the new approach- P '- Of permissiveness and mini-courses - , Forget the old rules, they don't matter anymore It mattered not what some ambitious prdfessorl would say She would not destroy the K-ing's English-1 :fy M- You will mark my-words she saidu For the pendulum -will swing back to theibasicsf Her students have much to be thankful . f H For having been blessed with Helen's gifts' Her love for children and teaching And what she gave to the profession Has made all of us a bit wiser. The 1976-1977 Congress is governed by David Foote, Ted Beauparlant, Marcia Kopanon, and Julie Piraino. Along with these officers, the homeroom representatives speak for the remainder of the student body. The Congress has set up committees that deal with every aspect of school life. They are responsible for the submarine sandwich and hamburger line in the cafe- teria. Utilizing money raised from several fund-raising activities, the Congress is able to sponsor dances, to award trophies for academic and sports excellence, and to contribute donations to organizations such as the library and the yearbook. The Con- gress also sent a delegation of students to the nursing homes throughout the city at Christmas time to sing Christmas carols and to provide Christmas spirit for the elderly. ...J K 2 m fn Kai amia- .Mg B 'X Ex N K 5-xx-EMM -1 .EAZ' Ana' v 5 KL-2- x . .- :mv M -fm. ,.
