19 E 2 EDMDNTDN, RLBERTH -ITER PARA TUTUM- ITER PARA TUTUM --- MAKE OUR WAY SECURE These were the words inscribed on the insignia of Archbishop Henry Joseph O ' Leary. To his memory we respectfully dedicate the first issue of the O ' Leary ENVOY. The education of Catholic youth was, he considered, of prime importance and during his episcopate he laboured unceasingly to further Catholic education in our Archdiocese. On one occasion Archbishop O ' Leary stated, The intellect, the memory, the imagination, the will, not to speak of the physical faculties, all require training and the most important part of education, is not so much that of the intellect as that of the will. In the formation of the good citizen, intellectual instruction alone will never supply the deficiency of in¬ adequate training of the will. On the contrar y, the better instructed intel¬ lectually, if the will is perverted towards wrong, the more dangerous will that man be to his fellowman and do to society in general. And in his quiet way he does a wonderful job. Archbishop O ' Leary It was in these simple and sincere words that Archbishop O ' Leary paid his personal tribute to an eminent educator -- Mr. Austin O ' Brien. , In gratitude for the latter ' s unwavering interest in our high school, its staff and students, we offer a joint dedication of the first issue of the O ' Leary ENVOY. On July 1, 1961, Mr. O ' Brien retired from his position as Super¬ intendent of the Edmonton Separate Schools, after an active administration of thirty-seven years. During his term of office, he was renowned for his traditional respect for high academic standards, coupled with a modern regard for better methods of teaching. We, the students of O ' Leary High School, are daily reaping the benefits of his faithful adherence to his responsibility in spearheading the constant progress of the Edmonton Separate Schools. ARCHBISHOP BEST WISHES FROM MAC DONALD HIS GRACE My congratulations and my thanks to all O ' Leary teachers and students on the splendid progress made up to the present time. Such results would hardly be possible without working and pulling together. This cooperative spirit should always prevail in your school. I believe it will. A sound tradition once started and based on truth and common sense, is not easily lost. Life is hard in recent years for those whose High School educationi was neglected. Such neglect is like starting life on a shaky foundation, something that was quite possible a generation ago when nearly all labour was unskilled, but extremely difficult in recent years, and becoming more so as we advance in this age of science. We wish you all to enjoy success and happiness. For this the secret is industry and application all through life and particularly in Junior and Senior High_School years. Most of us can recall our own years at school. They were not always pleasant; but those who made good use of them were deeply grateful later on for the lessons learned through hard work and self-denial. This applies whether answering a call to the priesthood, the religious life, or secular pursuits. All of them deserve serious and reverent consideration. The priesthood and the religious life are not the easiest walks of life. Neither was the path chosen by our Saviour to show us the way to happiness and genuine security. What shall it profit a man if he gain the whole.world, and suffer the loss of his soul? The fact that any particular walk of life is not easy should not deter us. The Lord who calls us can, if we ask Him, make even the hardest way both pleasant and fruitful. There are thousands of vacant jobs these past few years, because most men and women shun those that entail hard work and self-sacrifice, -- the very things that would build better characters, better homes, better schools and a better world. Sincerely in Christ, Archbishop of Edmonton. CONGRATULATIONS FROM HIS EXCELLENCY BISHOP SAVARYN Dear Graduates: With this first edition of the O ' Leary School Yearbook, it offers me great pleasure in extending my sincerest congratulations to the first graduates from this new house of learning. On your graduation day you experience an inner satisfaction that you have accomplished great things and you shine with a readiness to face the life of your own responsibilities. I wish you happiness in whatever walk of life God wishes you to choose. Your days will be pleasant and secure if you weave into the pattern of everyday living the principles of Christian living, the knowledge of which you have acquired during your school years. Then your life and the lives of those around you will become richer because of this wonderful treasure you carried away with you from O ' Leary High School. I hope and pray that Christ may be for you a lasting source of light, peace and every good. Neil N. Savaryn, Bishop for Ukrainian Catholics. f Running the morning marathon for the O ' Leary Special, joining in the- pre-class buzz sessions, facing the hourly challenge of the 3R ' s , participating in the extracurricular activities --a typical day in the life of an O ' Leary High School student. Nevertheless, the first four hundred such hectic days have been characterized by an encouraging combination of initiative, development and progress. One of the culminating features of these two years has been accepting and fulfilling of the responsibility for the editing of our first yearbook. To the principals. Sister Theresa Marie and Brother Hilarion, to our adviser Mrs. Lucich and to the entire yearbook staff we extend our sincere appreciation for the effort, skill, patience, and advice they gave so generously. The Envoy means the messenger, and thus adequately expresses the purpose of a yearbook. We hope that in future years it will continue to serve as a messenger to bring back to you pleasant memories of your present associates, and of the various events in our busy and exciting year here at O ' Leary. Co-Editors: Janet Tatarchuk Anthony Wankiewicz Ten years from now, when nostalgia and senility compel you to leaf through these pages, I hope that you re-discover my message. I wish the senior students success and that feeling of satisfaction at.having done the very best that they were able. Academic success is easily measured in terms of marks. After graduation, however, success is a little harder to measure. In terms of the Gospel, it is seeking first the Kingdom of God . Everything else appears then in its proper perspective. Real success will not necessarily be noted on the financial page. Success is living our life according to God ' s plan, and, incidentally, enjoying that satisfaction that accompanies such a life. N- Principal, O ' Leary Boys ' Sincere congratulations to the editors and staff of the ENVOY. You have done a fine job. To our graduates, the first of O ' Leary High School, we extend our prayerful good wishes. During the two years that you have been at O ' Leary High we have endeavoured to pass on to you the torch of aspiration and the ambition to be, to do, each according to his ability. Never forget that you were born to seek a pearl of greater price than worldly success, honours and wealth. May each of you be remembered, to use the words of Browning, as One who never turned his back but marched breast forward. Never doubted clouds would break; Never dreamed, though right were worsted, wrong would triumph; Held, we fall to rise, are baffled to fight better. Sleep to wake. Living this, you will FARE infinitely WELL. Principal, O ' Leary Girls ' . MISS MEYER Vice - Principal Biology 32 . Mathematics 30 Science 20 Typewriting 30; 20 MR. S. Attention Sister Theresa Marie. Dear Sister: I have received your kind letter and enclosure of $100 on behalf of the school, which is to be used for the education of Simon- Henri Ladeira of the Seminary at Kabwe, Republique de Congo. It is in his name as well as my own that I express sincere thanks and appreciation to the students who have contributed this gener¬ ous donation. I know the sacrifices that go into such a collection, and I am sure our Lord will bless and reward each of the con¬ tributors for them. I know the girls will pray for the success of their spiritual son and I want to assure them that he in turn will remember them as his benefactreses, in his own daily prayers. My since re, thanks to you Sister for interesting the girls in this all important apostolate, which means so much to the success of the missionary Church. I ask Our Risen Lord to bless you and the girls and to fill your hearts with holy joy. This has meant many hours of practice for those beginning on instruments to keep up with those who had some proficiency in their instruments from the start.
