Candids 19 OTHS Presents Tribute The 1983 fall play was Tribute and was per- formed on the nights of November 18 and 19. Al- though the cast was dis- appointed in the lack of attendance, they gave an excellent performance on both nights. The play was about Scottie Templeton, played by Scott Ramsey, who suffers from a ter- minal illness. He enjoys life to the fullest yet nev- er takes it too seriously. Scottie wants to spend the time he has left get- ting to know his son Jud, played by Scott Loyet. Jud was neglected as a child due to his parents' divorce. In the end, Scot- tie's friends and his son pay tribute to him. Once again, the cast and crew gave an excellent show. The Cast: Pam Barton, Carrie Sugg. Mark Greenberg. Stephanie Stewart. Fall Play 21 Madrigal Dinner Performance Pleases Large Crowds The sixth annual madrigal dinner was pre- formed in O'Fallon on the nights of December 3 and 4. In previous years, there had only been one preformance, but due to a demand for tickets it was preformed twice this year. The cast also preformed twice at SIU-E. The singers preformed a number of the songs at a variety of brunches, church services, and other social events. The preformance given by the singers and the brass ensemble, along with the atmosphere cre- ated by the scenery and the servants recreated entertainment of centuries ago and made for an enjoyable evening. The Swing Choir 6 24 Frolics 12 This years February Frolics brought out the talent as it has for many years. Overcoming some sound problems, the show was very enter- taining. Again one of the favorite acts was veteran rocker Mr. Bruce Hodg- don and his band. Challenging him in that department this year was Allen Cypert who put together a very good band. An annual favorite, the Frolics drew one of its best crowds ever. But. the crowd, at times, became a problem with noise. Some of the comedy acts were hard to follow because of the noise level. The show was very successful at raising funds for its sponsors. This should prove to improve future shows as the proceeds are used for new equipment. Frolics 2S Honor Roll Tea Salutes Scholars The theme for the 1984 Honor Roll Tea. as in previous years, was centered around Valentine's Day. The tea was held on February 14 and was attended by 370 honor students. To be eligible to attend, students must have earned a grade point average of 3-33 or above. The Student Council, who hosted the tea, personally delivered and hand made the invitations. The students gathered in the cafeteria to enjoy the cake and punch served by the Student Council. 1 1. There were 244 students and teach- ers who signed up to give blood, but on the day of the drive, 225 showed up. Only 205 donors could give blood. 103 of the 205 were First time donors. Students had a chance to sign up in the cafeteria so that they would be able to be excused from class, and also to give an estimate of how many peo- ple would be giving blood. It takes a lot of time to organize a blood drive, and it’s great when peo- ple help when they aren't asked. Pippin , is the story of the life and adventures of Pippin, the slightly misguided oldest son of Charlemagne. Hmporer of the Holy Roman Empire. Sex and vio- lence were key elements in this comedy-musical, which was ori- ginally choreographed by Bob Fosse. The OTHS production featured elaborate sets and special effects, not to mention the outrageous costumes. The show went particularly well due to the outstanding efforts of the cast and crew. Near-capacity crowds enjoyed the show both nights-a welcome change from the scarce attendance of last year's show. As usual, the pit band was in fine form; the technical crews gave a good accounting of themselves, as well. Eleventh Consecutive Superior Rating This year s concert band's outstanding achievement was their eleventh consecutive Superior rating at the Illinois High School Association Orga- nization Contest. This was the eleventh time that O'Fallon has participat- ed and the eleventh time that they received the superior rating. The choirs preformed a concert in De- cember which included a variety of songs from Handel's Messiah. Many of the choir members participated in the solo and ensemble contest in March and the various music festivals throughout the year. The delegations representing Cuba and United Kingdom were considered excellent. The individual award winners for O'Fallon were Mike Tulis, superior delegates and superior position paper; Kim Harrell, outstanding delegate and outstanding position paper; David Catalfamo, Brian Catalfamo, Sandi Lucido, and John Lansberry, superior delegates; Joel Colins, superior policy statement. Overall, O'Fallon took nine awards, with three of those to delegates from Cuba, four to delegates from United Kingdom, and two to a delegate from Alabania. Much of the success must be attributed to the dedication and hard work of sponsor, Dennis Grimmer who helps delegates prepare for the event. Model UN 45 Speech Team From October to March, the speech team travels throughout the state on weekends to compete in tournaments. The speech team competes in eleven different events that include speeches, radio newscasts, reading interpreting, and acting. Every student does something dif- ferent from all the others to allow a wide variety of interests and talents. The Prowler staff for the '83 84 school year underwent changes throughout the year caused by the loss of some members and the need to revise the responsibilities of some of the members. Thus, continuity is a bit lacking in this year's publications. Staff problems caused the cancellation of one of the nine publications. Some good writers stood out on the staff: Kim Harrell, sports and news; Kris Rhines, features; Bryan Gregory, sports; Chris Allen, sports; Renae Hines, news and features; Justine Davis, features; and Diane Seminerio, news. 50 Prowler I Kris Rhino earned the job of editor-n-chief and the Robert J. The frustration came as a result of the loss of key players in situations that sent the team to play some of their toughest opponents at less than full strength. Injuries and disciplinary action left the team short in almost every game of the season. The team seemed to lack the ability to put the ball into the endzone althouth they moved the ball well at times. This lack of scoring ability shows up in the fact that the team was shut out three times and could only manage two points in two of their games. Troy Robinson stood out as the team’s greatest offensive threat. He had the team's longest run, punt return, kick return, and interception return. He also led the team in rushing with five TD’s and 369 yards followed by Todd Stone with 330 yards. Chris Allen led the receivers with 127 yards followed by Robinson with 102 yards. Rob McIntosh led the defense with 43 solo tackles and 36 assists followed by Dale Sauer with 33 and 34. Steve Guinn led the team in sacks with 6. Second team All-Conference honors went to Robinson, Mike Jenkins, and Dale Sauer. 6 Record Opponent We They Mt. She failed to qualify for state, but put out a fine effort, finishing just two hundredths of a second away from the second place runner. The 1600-meter relay team, which consisted of Margie Martin, Angie Polen, Reina Santiago, and Lisa Judiscak, finished in third place with a time of 4:18.9. Two weeks earlier the girls had a disappoint- ing weekend, as they lost the conference cham- pionship to Highland by a single point. Row 1: I-eslie Jones, I.ori Kneedler, Norma Wilson. The IHSA set a 16-date limit on play which resulted in the Blue-Gold, two-team program being reduced to one team. The whole program had to be cut in half. Despite the cut-backs, the team still had a winning year with a 7-2 dual match record, losing only to Belleville Hast and West. The team placed fourth in the Belleville Hast Invita- tional Tournament, went undefeated in MVC dual matches and won the conference tourna- ment. After the conference, the team went on to win the IHSA sectional tournament and quali- fied the whole sectional team to the state finals in Chicago. At state, OTHS placed thirty-first out of 129 schools entered. Only Springfield and Belleville West placed higher of the schools from the southern half of the state. Leading this year's team were John Aregood (Captain), Steve Sterthman, Jerry Lasco, Kris Rhines, Chris Sow- ers, and Scott Sula. Varsity Starters. Row 1: Brian Short. John Aregood. Kris Rhines. The Best Glove award went to Susan Meier who was charged with only one error during the entire season. The Most Improved Player award went to Diane Pendegraft for her play at third base. Elected to the first team all-conference was Lisa Higgins while Susan Meier. Andrea Ham- mers and Diane Pendegraft were chosen to the second team. Lisa Higgins lead the team in both hitting and stolen bases. Her average was .510 while she stole 10 bases. The team ended a short season with a 5-2 record. Many of the players saw action at the varsity level, and thus show promise for next year's team. Leading the team in the offensive department were Julie Meier, Bobbie Jo Geromiller, and Sandy Kobelia. The pitchers were Gero- miller and Becky Klages, who was undefeated. Jill Voelkel lead the team in stolen bases. Beth DeBourge proved valuable as a utility player, seeing action in the infield and outfield while hitting well. According to Coach Fink, she may well have had the best throwing arm on both teams. Sara Beth Castrale did a good job behind the plate and held her own with the bat. Row I: Dec Allen. Pattie Wolf. Annually, tests are given around the country in different areas such as: math, English, graphic arts, chemistry, biology, and physics. The teachers of these subjects give the coordin- ator a list of students with passing grades. Then, in turn, the coordinator asks the students if they would like to participate with the JETS team. If the student wins in his field, he receives a medal as an award. There are also regional and state competitions, in which they can participate if their scores are high enough. There were 10 students who represented OTHS this year. The test was given at Belleville Area College in February. About 250 students from southern Illinois attended. Taking the English tests were Debbie Sturm and Lois Ver- vena. Lois came in third and received a medal. There were four students who took the chemistry test. They were Sven Burrows, Louis Mayo, Curt Biehn, and Brian Severns. Brian received a third place medal. In the biology test, Milan Seth received a second place medal. Chris Icide was the only student who took the physics test. Taking the math test were Bill Morgan, Curt Biehn, Brian Severns, and Kevin Harmann. Kevin was awarded a fourth place medal.
