SENIOR STATISTICS CLASS POEM As Seniors, we walk these halls our last time For yesterday ' s care-free hours we are yearning. These halls are now precious memories that shine In our hearts like flames of friendship, ever burning. When first we came to Odell to be led, We were like children in the dark of day, Unsure and afraid of the road ahead, We were led by teachers who lighted the way. We remember the years and friends, so dear. We look back and wonder where the years have gone, As to each Senior ' s eye there comes a tear, For we know we ' ll soon be parting from home. The world is waiting and we are ready; Ready for the challenge that ' s before us. We ' ve had good leaders, sincere and steady Who prepared us for the world that awaits us. Our time has come and we as Seniors stand, With our heads high and our outlooks bright, As the future leaders of our great land. Tomorrow is ours; we are the light. Yes, we are the light, the future we hold. We are the hope for brighter years ahead. Tomorrow is for us to shape and to mold. We must stand true for our land must be led. With God as our loving, unfailing guide, We look to the future with these thoughts of gold That whatever may come, in Him we confide; We will always have His hand to hold. We are ready to stand the unending test. Will we remain strong in times that are rough? We can promise only to do our best. The world will judge if our best is enough. CLASS COLORS Navy Blue and Wdnte CLASS FLOWER White Carnation CLASS MOTTO Our greatest glory is not in never failing, But rising every time we do. 82 CLASS HISTORY In August, 1952, many little frustrated boys and girls wandered around the school halls for their very first time. Some were crying and some were laughing and all were making new friends. We had made one im- portant step in our lives. Through our primary and ele- mentary grades we continued growing and maturing. Finally in August, 1960, 64 frustrated young people entered the halls for their first year of high school. At our first class meeting we elected officers under the leadership of Miss Mary Niblock and Mr. Max Lippard. Our officers were Larry Smith, president; Butch Farthing, vice-president; Judy Cope, secretary-treasurer; and Dianne Goodnight, reporter. Judy Cope, was chosen as Miss Freshman and Larry Smith as Mr. Freshman. Frances Stegall and Janet Hopkins were chosen for varsity cheerleaders by the Monogram Club. Three of our girls were named to the varsity basketball team; two of these were lettered into the Monogram Club at the end of the year. When we became sophomores, there were only 6 1 of us; all of whom were less frustrated and more settled. This year we were guided by Mrs. Augusta Stough and Mr. Ted Bechtler. For our officers we elected Butch Farthing, president; Linda Brown, vice-president; Brenda Fisher, secretary-treasurer; and Judy Cope, reporter. Linda Brown and Johnny Johnson were chosen to repre- sent our class as Miss and Mr. Sophomore. This year 26 sophomores were accepted into the Future Teachers of America Club. Eight girls and eight boys were select- ed by the juniors to serve as waitresses and waiters for their J un io r- Senior Banquet. Those chosen included Linda Brown, Janice Laney, Frances Stegall, Janet Hop- kins, Judy Cope, Gail Smith, Jean Baucom, Helen Irvin, Jimmy Cook, Frank Phillips, Butch Farthing, Ted Bar- bee, Larry Smith, Tommy Shepherd, Richard Smith, and Bobby Linn. Six girls and one boy were on the basketball teams. Then, in May, 1962, the first half of our treasured high school years had been completed and we were look- ing forward to the last half more and more. As August arrived, 55 juniors also arrived to begin our busy year. With Mrs. Lucille Daniel and Mrs. Janet Goldiere as sponsors, we elected Butch Farthing to head our class as president. The other officers were Brenda Fisher, vice-president; Gail Smith, secretary; Judy Cope, treasurer; and Paulette Hill, reporter. Shortly before Thanksgiving, 16 new members were tapped into the Beta Club. Those tapped were Sue Almon, Linda Brown, Jean Baucom, Leilani Childress, Judy Cope, Brenda Fisher, Dianne Goodnight, Janet Hopkins, Judy Kiser, Janice Laney, Brenda Penninger, Sue Riley, Gail Smith, Frances Stegall, Sue Tilley, and Ellen Wilkinson. To end our fun-filled year as juniors, we honored our seniors with a lovely banquet. The theme was Apple Blossom Time”. After much preparation in our previous three years of high school, we were ready to settle down for our last. There were 52 seniors to be under the guidance of Mrs. Mary Cooke and Mr. E. Ray Jarvis. The officers to lead us through our last year were Larry Smith, president; Dennie Crowe, vice-president; Janice Laney, secretary; Linda Brown, treasurer; and Brenda Penninger, reporter. At the close of our junior year, Brenda Fisher and Judy Cope were chosen as editor and co-editor of the annual and Frances Stegall and Butch Farthing were selected as business managers. Frances Stegall was chosen as editor of the ODELL NEWSETTE. During the first part of our senior year, the remain- der of the two staffs were elected. Those chosenfor the newspaper staff were Janice Laney, feature editor; Brenda Penninger, girls ' sports editor; Tommy Shepherd, boys ' sports editor; and Dennie Crowe, circulation manager. Linda Brown Tommy Shepherd 86 Giftorians CLASS PROPHECY As principal of Odell High School, I hear of most of the comings and goings in the community. Since it was the week of several large conventions being held in this area two of my teachers, BRENDA PENNINGER and JUDY KISER, and I decided to arrange a class reunion. Fifteen years is a long time to keep a record of fifty-two people and we acknowledged the fact more and more as we began trying to contact each member. We employed the help of EDDY CLINE, Blake Allen ' s agricultural assistant. We had no trouble finding TOMMY DURGIN, the re- nowned professional cheerleader during basketball season. We had a little trouble getting to JOHN CARRIKER, who is a famous comedian anu VICKIE DICK a beautiful fashion model because their press secretaries protect them so profusely. WAYNE EUDY, the basketball coach at the University of North Carolina, agreed to help us. He promised he would use the University ' s vast research facilities to help us track down some of our members. It was Brenda ' s job to get in touch with everyone still living in the community. LEILANI CHILDRESS, SUE RILEY, STEPHANIE EMERSON, a n d PATSY ROGERS agreed to help Brenda write the invitations while their children were at school. RICHARD SMITH, the manager of one of the drug stores in DIANNE GOODNIGHT ' S vast chain of stores, informed us that Dianne would be visiting Concord soon. RICKY JOHNSTON, one of the world ' s foremost race drivers, and two of his mechanics, JIMMY HAYER and LANCE HEGLAR, will be in Charlotte soon for a big race. The National Secretary ' s Convention will bring many of our classmates home. JUDY COPE, the private sec- retary to an executive is flying into Charlotte next week with her switch board operator, JANET HOPKINS. FRANCES STEGALL, the secretary to the editor of Harper ' s Magazine, BRENDA FISHER, will be here for the convention. LINDA BROWN and JEAN BAUCOM, medical missionaries, are traveling to India with the very famous heart surgeon, ELLEN WILKINSON, her nurse, NANCY HARTSELL, and the great minister, GARRY GUFFEY. FRANK PHILLIPS, one of Arthur Smith ' s Cracker- jacks, promised to entertain us at the reunion. GAIL SMITH will bring some of the students from her school of baton to entertain us, also. JANICE LANEY, the world ' s greatest poetess, will read us several selections from her latest poems. BOYCE CHAPMAN will leave his seat in the New York Philharmonic Orchestra to play his famed French horn at our reunion. BARBARA FREEZE, who is now the director of two Arthur Murray Studios of Dancing, will present to us several new steps. JIMMY COOK, the owner of Cook ' s Photography Studio, will make the pictures for us. DEWEY AND JOE MESIMER and JERRY MARLOW hope to be able to leave their vast farming operations long enough to attend. SUE ALMON, the first woman coach for the Harlem Globetrotters and HELEN IRVIN, the first woman speed boat driving champion, will return home after touring with the Freedom for Women Association. CLIFFORD BLACKWELDER, Mr. America of 1966, will be unable to attend because his first picture will have its world premier the same night as the reunion.
