After a few days we were soon accustomed to our new surroundings. Our sponsors were Miss Mary Niblock and Mr. Kenneth Swain. At the first class meet- ing we elected Gary Kee, president; Larry Taylor, vice-president; and Judy Benton, secretary and treasurer. Judy Smith and Judy Benton were elected cheerleaders. The next year we were sophomores. We began this year with Mrs. Augusta Stough and Mr. Ted Bechtler as our sponsors. We chose as our officers: Gary Kee, president; BennyAllen, vice-president; Lynda Frye, treasurer; Poni Johnson, secretary, and Annie Poston, reporter. This year Poni Johnson was chosen queen and she rode in the Kannapolis and Concord parades. Our next year was filled with much more excitement because now we were juniors. Mrs. Janet Goldiere and Mrs. Lucille Daniel were our sponsors. To lead our class this year we e- lected Jimmy Baker, President; Jerry Mesimer, vice-president; Carla Spradley, secretary; Annie Poston, treasurer; and Mary Johnson, reporter. We were very proud when 22 members of our class were tapped into the Beta Club. Those tapped were: Benny Allen, Jimmy Baker, Jerry Mesimer, Mike Stegall, Barbara Baucom, Annie Poston, Hilda Smith, Judy Benton, Bonnie Poplin, Carla Spradley, Shirley Eudy, Lundy Goodman, Mary Johnson, Betty Lyerly, Ruth Costner, Cynthia Penninger, Lois Fortner, Poni Johnson, Carol Nance, Nancy Tallent, Brenda Freeze and Linda Taylor. How excited we were when we chose Cheaper by the Dozen as our Junior play, with Mrs. Janet Goldiere directing. Bonnie Sue Poplin Larry Taylor Class Lawyers 84 CLASS PROPHECY I can hardly realize that it is 1982! Time flies al- most as fast as our newest jets here at the Charlotte Municipal Airport. My boss, BENNY ALLEN, and I were talking the other day about several of our former classmates. We see a few of our classmates quite of- ten, in fact, KERMIT TUCKER is flying a DC- 8 be- tween Charlotte and Chicago. Kermit mentioned that REBECCA MESIMER and RUTH COSTNER are host- esses on his plane frequently. WAYNE FREEZE who is head mechanic for Eastern Airlines works with MIKE PEELE in sketching future air craft designs. While we were talking LARRY TAYLOR walked in- to our reservation office. He was preparing to return to U. N. C. where he is a French professor. Larry remarked that he had just seen JIMMY BAKER who is now President of Colonial Stores and that Jimmy was finally sharing grocery bills with his favorite cashier, CARLA SPRADLEY. He also mentioned that LINDA TAYLOR and ANN EMERSON are enjoying their posi- tions as head bookkeepers for the Colonial Stores. LINDA FRYE is noted for modeling the latest cre- ations by MARY JOHNSON in the Mademoiselle Mag- azine. That famous announcer, BOBBY BOGER is often heard over WAYS. Only the other day I heard him ad- vertising BETTY LYERLY ' s product Height Pills”. After this commercial I was surprised to hear the na- tions number one hit sung by GARY KEE. It was George Washington ' s Bridge”. Professor Taylor remarked that he had visited JERRY MESIMER, now a well-known beef tycoon, who owns the famous Broken Wheel Ranch along the banks of the Buffalo Creek. During his visit they were dis- cussing FRED DWIGHT BARBEE ' s important deci- sion. Being President of the United States he was con- sidering whether or not to send Commander DWAYNE NELSON HENSLEY into the outer fringes of space. Professor Taylor said that he had been reading a- boutROY CROMER who is a speculator on Wall Street. Mr. Cromer has made a considerable amount from L. T. BEAM ' S famous stock, Lima Bean Beam ' s, Inc. We were anxious to tell Professor Taylor about the other classmates whom we had heard from. I told him about the post card from CYNTHIA PENNINGER and BARBARA BAUCOM which was postmarked Geneva, Switzerland. They were taking a world tour during their vacation from teaching at their Alma Mater. The card mentioned that they had seen HARRY BARBEE, now a famous basketball player, and his coach, MIKE STEGALL, at the summer Olympics in Rome. BONNIE POPLIN and LUNDY GOODMAN are ex- ecutive secretaries at the Wachovia Bank and Trust Company of Charlotte. BRENDA FREEZE recently opened an Arthur Mur- ray Dance Studio in Concord. Her prized pupil is one of ANNIE LEAZER ' s five children. Annie won the Homemaker of the Year award in 1980. WINIFRED COBB is a famous playwriter. Wini- fred ' s success comes from her joking ways and com- ments for every occasion, such as the way in which she kept us laughing during our high school days. DONNIE GOULDMAN is owner of a popular sum- mer camp for children. This is also a nice setting in which to raise her six children. I heard that BARNARD COOK is selling his choice beef products to WAYNE CAMPBELL ' S Super-Soup Kitchen. The Super-Soup Kitchen is the favorite eating of Odell students after ball games. SHIRLEY EUDY and LOIS FORTNER, well-known hair stylists, are owners of the La SaUe DeBeau in Kannapolis. BARRY POLK and his Music Makers have recent- ly made a big hit at the Peppermint Lounge in New York. They have developed a new dance - it ' s more fun than the twist! CAROL NANCE is a driving license examiner for North Carolina school bus drivers. GERENE JORDAN ' S Mystery Hour is a big hit on N. B. C. every Monday night. She developed an enthus- iasm for mysteries from watching Thriller” during her high school days. Following Gerene ' s program GUY NEAL CROWE co-stars with Dr. Kildare in an exciting new medical story. JUDY SMITH is happily married and traveling a- round the world with her husband who has made a ca- reer of the navy. Judy says she really enjoys this type of life. JACKIE LEDWELL and JEWEL LAMBERT are successful Marriage Counselors in Concord. They received most of their training from psychology in high school. HILDA SMITH is now a secretary for JUDY BEN- TON, a famous Washington lawyer. Judy has solved many important cases for the government. The students are really proud of their winning girls ' ball team which is coached by LINDA HILL. Linda en- joyed basketball so much in high school that she decid- ed to make her career as a coach. It was nice talking about our old classmates, but the reservation office was becoming crowded with pas- sengers; therefore, Professor Taylor purchased his ticket and I returned to my work once more. All through the years we could hardly wait For our principal to let down the proverbial gate. We all had dreams of things by the score That would be ours when we walked through these doors. Graduation is here with its formalities and cheer But for us who are graduating also come tears. All the good times as a member of dear ole Odell High Are all drifting away like clouds in the sky. A whole new world of excitement and cheers Is in store for each of us in the following years. New jobs, new friends, and many new places Each day our lives will be filled with many new faces. But all should not be sadness as we walk down this aisle For the good Lord has blessed us-now we should smile. He gave us the best in every way Of teachers, friends, and learning each day. So let us give thanks for all we ' ve gained in this short while And hold our heads high, to the world let us smile. With our rings on our fingers, our diploma in our hands We will all walk along life ' s wonderful strands. The whole world lies before us -to have and to hold As we use our gained knowledge which is more valuable than gold.
