Odell School, are so greatly indebted for his kindness and help in the establish- ment of our institution . THE SENIOR CLASS OF W.R. ODELL SCHOOL Concord, North Carolina P resents the ODELL MILESTONES of 1961 IN MEMORY O Death, thou dost seem to roh us of our treasures, hut thou dost really make them ours for. ever iu the dew of immortal youth. F.B. Meyer, D.D. Carl Lyles They are uot dead! They have but passed... Into the new and Larger Life of that Serener Sphere. L.T. McCREERY Phyllis Little DEDICATION MR. J.B. MITCHELL We, the Senior Class of 1961, with greatest respect, and deepest appreciation, dedicate the 1961 Odell Milestones to Mr. J. B. Mitchell. Always ready and willing to help us with any problems that we encountered, his con- tinued encouragement and guidance have opened our young eyes to new horizons and stim- ulated our interests in new fields of endeavor. Because of his interest and never ceasing desire to help up, he has made many friends, at Odell, who hold him in high esteem and will cherish his friendship, always, with the greatest devotion. To you, Mr. Mitchell, who turned our many bewildering moments into enriching ex- periences, we dedicate this book. 3 TABLE OF CONTENTS 4 THROUGH THESE DOORS... Through These Doors, the theme expressed throughout the 1961 Milestones, the youth discover their own world of friends, joys, and. ..problems. Through each door they find challenging opportunities, which not only teach them how to accept responsibility, but also mold their personalities. The students are led to knowledge and to a better understanding of life by the ADMIN- ISTRATION. Through CLASSES, the world of facts and figures is revealed to them. The doors of ACTIVITIES open to situations which teach them how to become better citizens, and also give the students a sense of belonging. FEATURES supply the little extras, add Life to the school schedule, and provide an interesting side line. Through the doors of ATHLETICS each student, whether playing or watching, gains school spirit. This strengthens the school and also provides a closer feeling of unity between the students. These are the doors which open early in the young person’s life, and do not close until the student has been given every opportunity to realize his capabilities and to go on to better things, by his passage. Through These Doors. 5 c i H 2 w S O S 5d W W s M W of mild confusion... 6 of fellowship ... 7 of tense excitement. 8 Superintendent of Cabarrus County Sehools Mr. C. A. After the removal of the large shrubb- ery, new shrubs were planted. The area around the front entrance to the building was beautified and the small plots sur- rounding the stone pillars on either ex- tremity of the lawn were, also, planted with greenry. We began the fall of ' 58 as sophomores under the guidance of Mrs. Augusta Stough and Mrs. Mary Cooke. At our first class meeting we elected Floyd Kerr as president; Janice Baucom, vice president; and Carol Irvin, secretary and treasurer. We were very proud of Barbara Ford and Ted Russ when they became cheer- leaders. Some of our girls and boys became members of the basketball team. We silently kneel in adoration to pray Our gratitude for this Commencement Day. To our teachers, God bless them, for each loving deed. They ' ve worked so earnestly to fulfill every need. They ' ve led us down an educational path Of history, science, langauge, and math. To Odell High, we leave our memory And the remembrance of days that used to be.
