Sixty-three students enter high school for their first year, as freshmen. The thoughts were frightening, but after a few weeks we loved it. Our sponsors were Miss Mary Niblock and Mrs. Carolyn Williams. At our first class meeting we elected Kenneth Smith, president; Becky Hinson, vice president; Linda Jordan, secretary; and Barbara Akins, treasurer. During this year 13 members of our class joined the band and we were very proud when they marched in the Charlotte Carrousel. Six of our class- mates joined the Glee Club. We were also proud when Brenda Lancaster, Sue Beam, and Joyce Almon were elected as cheerleaders. Another honor was given to om classmate, Becky Hinson, who was chosen as Homecoming Queen. We began our next year as sophomores with the help of Mrs. Margaret Bums and Mrs. Louise Morrison. We chose as our officers: J.W. Isenhour, president, Jerry Christenbury, vice president; Becky Hinson, secretary; and Brenda Lancaster, treasLuer. During this year Becky Hinson was chosen Queen of Hearts. Also, out of our class six girls and three boys became members of the basketball teams. Another classmate, Barbara Akins joined the cheerleaders. Our next year was much more exciting because now we were juniors. Mrs. Lucille Daniel and Mrs. Janet Goldiere were our sponsors. To lead our class we elected Kenneth Smith, president; E. K, Riley, vice president; Linda Jordan, secretary; Jerry Christenbury, treasurer; and Joyce Collins, reporter. We were all very proud when 18 members of our class were selected to be tapped into the Beta Club. These included: Joyce Collins, Becky Hinson, Peggy Efird, Linda Jordan, Ann Stirewalt, Sue Beam, Ruby Johnson, Martha Howell, Joyce Almon, Judy Ballard, Rebecca Patterson, E. K. Riley, Kenneth Smith, George Cline, Jerry Christenbury, J. W. Isenhour, Dunn Smith, and John Vanpelt. A very important time came when we presented our junior play. We chose Happy Daze, with Mrs, Janet Goldiere directing. The cast included: Joyce Collins, Martha Howell, Linda Jordan, Ruby Johnson, Barbara Moore, Ann Stirewalt, J.W. Isenhour, George Cline, Johnny Foster, Jerry Christenbury, Jimmy Smith, and Bill Chapman. This year Becky Hinson was chosen as High School Queen and she rode in the Kannapolis and Concord parades. During this year George Cline was elected president and J. W. Isenhour, corresponding secretary, of the State F, T A, Club, with the help of Mrs. Lucille Daniel, Odell ' s F.T.A. sponsor. As the graduation exercises were being planned, the marshals were chosen from our class. Kenneth Smith was chief, with Martha Howell, Linda Jordan, Ruby Johnson, Ann Stirewalt, J. W. Isenhour, E. K. Riley, and John Vanpelt, assisting. As the year came to a close we entertained the seniors with a lovely banquet. The theme we chose was Mardi Gras, and we all worked very hard to make it a success. Finally, our dreams came true. Now, we were seniors. Mrs. Mary Cooke and Mr. Carl Cathy were to be our sponsors. For our officers we chose Ruby Johnson, president; Sue Beam, vice president; Linda Jordan, secretary; and Jerry Christenbury, treasurer. To start the year off right, work was begun on the newspaper and annual. Several members of the newspaper staff had been chosen at the close of our junior year. These included Ruby Johnson, editor; Judy Ballard, co-editor; and Johnny Foster, circulation manager. Several of the annual staff members had also been chosen, and, they were: Linda Jordan, editor; and Martha Howell, co-editor; Jerry Christenbury, business manager; and Sue Beam, co-business manager. During one of our first class meetings, we elected the remainder of the annual staff. They were: Jimmy Lyerly, snapshot editor; Peggy Efird and Brenda Lancaster, circulation managers; and Joyce Collins, Carol Weaver, and Ann Stirewalt, typists. The remainder of the newspaper staff included: Barbara Akins, feature editor; Brenda Lancaster and Kenneth Smith, sports editors. Mrs. Mary Cooke was the sponsor for our annual, and Mrs. Augusta Stough and Mr. Bruce Anderson sponsored the newspaper. Just before Christmas, plans were begun on our senior play. We chose Peck ' s Bad Boy with Mr. Cathy directing. Members of the cast included: Kenneth Smith, E. K. Riley, Joyce Collins, Ann Stirewalt, Barbara Moore, J. W. As we began to make preparations for graduation, we chose Ann Benson and Stevie Fortner, as our class mascots. In making plans for our class night exercises, we chose Barbara Akins, class poet; Brenda Lancaster, class prophetess; Judy Ballard and Buddy Robbins, giftorians; Becky Hinson and Bill Chapman, class lawyers; and Ann Stirewalt, historian. This year Martha Howell was chosen as Miss Hi Miss and Ruby Johnson was awarded the D.A.R. Good Citizenship Award. Being a secretary for the best lawyer around, 1 see a lot of my old friends and classmates. A few days ago my boss, Mr. BILL CHAPMAN, and I were talking about what a success KENNETH SMITH had made as a history teacher in one of New York ' s largest schools. The otlier morning I was sitting at my desk when E.K. RILEY, a former classmate and close friend of Mr. Chapman ' s walked into the office. The two friends had a long chat about the good old days. Mr. Riley, who is president of the chemical plant where DLINN SMITH is foreman, was telling us about JIMMY and JOYCE ALMON. Jimmy is now the district manager for Spur Incorporated, while Joyce is part time secretary for Lamarr Insurance Company and also housewife and mother. Mr. and Mrs. Almon have a fine family of three. Yesterday, I went around to Sue ' s Beauty Salon for a hair set. I was surprised to walk through the door and find SUE BEAM, the new owner. She informed me that she was also the owner of three other shops in different towns in North Carolina. While I was there I ran into MARTHA MOTLEY. Martha was now a very ambitious elementary school teacher, and during the summer months she works in a flower shop owned by JOYCE COLLINS. Miss Collins finally hooked a man, and is now the mother of two sets of twins. Joyce has really made a success of her life. We hear that BARBARA AKINS and PEGGY EFIRD are now working as dress designers for SeventeenMagazine. Barbara also writes poems for Ladies ' Home Journal in her spare time. She is married to a lab technician at the Charlotte Hospital. Peggy is engaged to the editor of the magazine for which she is employed. I received a letter from a very close friend, BECKY HINSON. Becky is leading quite an interesting life as tlie wife of a railroad engineer, and is living in Kansas City when not traveling around with her husband. Becky toldmethat she ran into MARTHA HOWELL last week and Martha was very happy in her position as an airline hostess for Trans World Airlines. The pilot, incidentally, is WAYNE PARKER. Wayne decided that it would be safer to fly in the air with wings than on the ground without wings. Martha also said that on her last trip which was from California to North Carolina, she had as a passenger on her plane, Mrs. JUDY BALLARD and her husband, David. They were returning to Concord to visit their friends and family. Judy has been very happy as the wife of a sailor. My old friends, BARBARA MOORE and CAROL WEAVER, dropped by to see me yesterday. I was surprised to learn that these two women were now working in a food tester ' s laboratory in Baltimore, Maryland. Barbara told me that she ran into JIMMY LYERLY and JIMMY CARRIKER, Jimmy Lyerly is working as a very prominent undertaker at Lady ' s Funeral Home in Concord, and Jimmy Carriker was a very prosperous farmer and also a happily married man with a family of twelve. LINDA FURR, head librarian at Concord Public Library, has made a success of herself. She has written a book which is a best seller. The book is entitled How to Lose Weight. JIMMY ALLEN, who is coach for the State College Basketball team in Raleigh, came by to see us last week. He said that J.W. ISENHOUR was now captain of the world famous basketball team, The Harlem Globe Trotters. We hear that RUBY JOHNSON has made a great success of her life, too. She is working as an English teacher at her old Alma Mater, Odell High School. LINDA JORDAN, the nationally known opera singer, is appearing in a play which is now playing Broadway. MARGARET JOHNSON and CAROLYN LITAKER are now famous hair models for Edwards Hair Modeling Agency, The agency is owned by DeLORIS EDWARDS. RONNIE CRAVEN, SHERRILL DANCY, and WAYNE FITZPATRICK are well known in the world of horses. They are very successful bookies. We were pleased to hear that our old friend and classmate, GEORGE CLINE, the well known singer, has made his debut on the Ed Sullivan Show. JOHN RAY VANPELT is his business manager. CAROL MESIMER tells us that she is leading a very simple but happy life. She is working with her husband in a super market selling fruit and vegetables. Carol tells us that Ronnie Linker and Bruce Lipe are the drivers of their produce trucks. We read in a movie magazine where they were making a re-run of the movie Hercules. BOBBY MESIMER, who is a very popular actor, is going to play the part of Hercules in the new movie. Good luck , Bobby. The last I heard, TONY RICHIE was playing a guitar with a rock ' n roll band at a nearby beach. BUDDY ROBBINS is now a dance instructor at Arthur Murray ' s Dance Studio in New York City. ANN STIREWALT is also a teacher at the Murray ' s Studio. She teaches ballroom dancing. We were shocked to hear that Ann is not yet married, but she is still looking. JOHNNY FOSTER and R.L. PORTER are partners in an antique car lot. They have hired TOMMY SELLERS to travel over the United States to collect parts for these prize possessions. JERRY CHRISTENBURY is working in the First National Bank, his main job is guarding the vault. BRENDA POPLIN is working for the Concord Tribune. She has a column called Advice to the Lovelorn. Miss Poplin is happily married, and is the mother of five children. Our old friend, JERRY ALMOND, who is now a pilot in the Air Force, told us of hisvisit to a concert at Madison Square Garden when off on leave. He was surprised to see the piano player was none other than our own LEWIS BAUCOM. I was walking down Main Street last week when I ran into REBECCA PATTERSON. I was surprised to hear that she was still working at Miller and Jones Shoe Store. She hadbeen promoted to assistant manager. Rebecca informed me that she and Brad were expecting a new addition to their family in about four months. Rebecca is already the mother of three. I read in the newspaper that HOWARD COLEY has finally reached his million dollar point. He is the dignified owner of several oil wells in Oklahoma. We also read that LARRY ALLRED was going to begin working at the Radio Station WEGO as news broadcaster. Larry ' s place of business is in a very nice location— on the banks of the Buffalo Creek. JIMMY SMITH ' S sister told me recently that her brother had gone to Arizona in hopes that he would find the girl of his dreams and be married. What ' s the matter, Jimmy, don ' t you like the girls at home? HOWARD WEAVER, who is a famous doctor, came in for help this morning.
