THE ODELL STONES for NINETEEN HUNDRED FIFTY-THREE Cabarrus County Public Library www.cabarruscountv.us library Through the toil and strife of this busy life, We pause for commencement day; And think of all that we ' ve been through, To reach this happy day. Let us think back over the years we ' ve -striven, To know the joy of graduation day; And ponder in our hearts the thought, Who taught us what to do and say. We ' ve reached the end of our toilsome road, Of which we ' ve dreamed so long; To face the world with open hearts, And forever shun the wrong. As we approach the scenes of the outdoor world To start our life anew; We ' ll ask God to help us in everything. We undertake to do. This was our freshman year. We elected as our officers: Valda Brumley, President; Jo Ann Chris- tenbury, Vice President; Sara Allison, Secretary; Steve Christy, Treasurer; Jennie Irene Kerr, Reporter. Our sponsors for the year were Miss Mary Niblock for the girls and Mr. Blake Allen for the boys. At first we were rather lost, but with the help of our upperclassmen we soon knew our way around. I’m sure this first year left fond memories for each of us. We were proud to have Jen- nie Kerr and George Tucker as marshals for our class. Our sophomore year was even more thrilling than our freshman year had been. By this time everybody knew their way around and we began the year with a fine start. We elected as our officers: Geprge Tucker, President; Jimmy Marlowe, Vice President; Jennie Kerr, Secretary; Valda Brumley, Treasurer; Nina Taylor, Reporter. Our sponsors were Mr. Ralph Conrad and Mr. Jay Robinson. We had a very successful year and left Odell High looking forward to the coming school year, when we would be juniors. We were proud to have our class represented by two marshals, Jennie Kerr and Nina Taylor. Now it was our junior year, and we were proud to be upperclassmen. Under the leader- ship of Mr. Richard Swaringen, we elected our officers; Valda Brumley, President; George Tuck- er, Vice President; Jennie Kerr, Secretary; Steve Christy, Treasurer; and Nina Taylor, Reporter. Marshals for our class were Jennie Kerr, chief; George Tucker, Nina Taylor, and Helene Caldwell. We were honored to have them represent our class. Many new things happened this year that I’m sure will remain in our memories forever. Among these things was the Junior-Senior Banquet, which was held April 9, 1951, at the Moose Lodge in Concord. We used as our theme “Garden of Tomorrow.” Among our honored guests was Mr. A. G. Odell. Before the end of the year we elected our annual staff for the coming year. They were as follows: Jennie Kerr, editor-in-chief; Valda Brumley, assistant editor; Nina Taylor, business manager; George Tucker, assistant business manager; Steve Christy, sports editor; Doris Bar- bee, chief typist; Jo Ann Christenbury, snapshot editor; Bobby Gentle, circulation manager, Trenton Measimer, art editor. Next we elected our Tiger Clips Staff. They were as follows: Jo Ann Christenbury, editor; Steve Christy, assistant editor; Peggy Irvin, news editor; Sara Winecoff, George Tucker, sports editors; Helene Caldwell, feature editor; Jennie Kerr and Bobby Gentle, artists; Banna Holbrook, joke editor; Valda Brumley, circulation manager; Doris Barbee, chief typist; Geraldine Russ, assistant typist. Our sponsors were Mrs. Louise Morrison and Miss Martha Boswell. The paper was a real success, thanks to efforts of the entire staff. Another event to remember was the May Day program, which was the first Odell had held. Our class was represented by two very pretty young ladies, Jo Ann Christenbury and Valda Brumley. Now we are almost at the end of our education at Odell. We are now seniors. Our class sponsor is Mrs. Louise Morrison. Early in the year we elected as officers: George Tucker, presi- dent; Nina Taylor, vice president; Doris Kee, secretary; Steve Christy and Helene Caldwell, re- porters. Next we elected our class day officers as follows: Elizabeth Coble, poetess; Virginia W. Atwell, historian; Trenton Measimer, lawyer; Helene Caldwell, prophetress; Steve Christy and Doris Kee, giftorians. Another eventful day of our senior class was the electing of the mascots. They are Kath- leen Kee, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Kee, and Ed Morrison, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Morrison. We are proud to have them as our mascots. Now we are at the close of our education at dear old Odell High, but we will always look back to our wonderful hours spent there, and remember all the good times we have had. We give our thanks to our parents and teachers, and especially to Mr. Thomas, because he has proved a wonderful principal and leader. VIRGINIA W. ATWELL Historian LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the graduating class of Odell High School, in the year of our Lord, nineteen hundred and fifty-three, being ready to depart this life of turmoils and hardships at the W. DORIS KEE STEVE CHRISTY ' Giftorians SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY Along with atomic energy and television is radar which enables us to see, hear, and know everything! Let us set up the TV screen for 1963 and find out all the things that have happened to the ’53 graduates of OHS. Now, let’s see, whom shall we look in on first. Haven’t seen Bobby Gentle in a long time. Let’s look for him. There he is— a famous painter in New York. He’s working on his latest masterpiece, which is a study of cherubs. He has succeeded in engaging the famous models Valda Brumley and Doris Kee. San Francisco, California— Elizabeth Coble has just set sail for Japan where she will begin her work as a missionary. George Tucker, as usual, one of the prominent persons before the public is now the Republican Speaker of the House. In the Sports Hall of Fame I noticed that Doris Barbee heads the list; on another plaque I see the name of Sara Winecoff— world famous softball player. Jimmy Patterson is now a famous jockey at Justin Rankin’s race track. Last year he entered the Kentucky Derby, riding a horse owned by Trenton Measimer. The quiet Bobby Walker we knew has won world fame for his daring feat of going over Niagara Falls in a plywood barrel made by Dwight Morris. Several of the girls find matrimony a pleasant occupation. Virginia Atwell, Geraldine Russ, and Peggy Irvin are all living happily in their little bungalows. A teachers’ convention in Chicago— let’s see if we know anyone there. Why there is Flo ra Hartsell and Jennie Kerr too, who teaches at A. L. Brown High- still likes Kannapolis. Lynn Me Murry is teaching Chemistry at Franklin County High School in Georgia. Jo Ann Christenbury sure knows the way to a man’s heart. She is now dietitian at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York. Serving efficiently as Secretary of the United States Treasury we find Steve Christy. Steve says he got his experience while handling the pennies of the Senior Class of ’53. ° Well, well, here is something interesting— the world famous “Redheads” will play next Tuesday. They are featuring a girl who can cut flips between dribbles, let’s see why her name is “Nina” send-um-rolling Taylor. The Stare Line Beauty Shop, owned, operated and swept out by Doris McManus and Banna Holbrook is one of the most progressive business establish- ments of this district. I see a large truck rolling along— well, look who the driver is— Foy Troutman. He hauls tomatoes and peaches, (and they don’t always fall under the food group either). Neal James can be seen almost any day on the sandy beach with his distil- ling apparatus, distilling the water from the ocean to obtain salt so he can catch birds by putting salt on their tails. As for me— I’ve just finished the “Unfinished Symphony” while fiying around the world upside down in a jet helicopter. The screen is blurring. I can see nothing more . . . thus ends the prophecy of the Seniors of W. R. Odell High School and their participation in the future world.
