His thorough, thoughtful instruction and understanding na- ture has smoothed the paths of high school life for everyone has come to know him. Teaching, like a magnet, has drawn to it many members of the Cox family. His father, mother, wife and oldest daughter have been or are employed in that field. Coming to Nyack after graduation from Oswego State Normal School, he finished his work for a degree at New York University. Before coming to this high school, Mr. Cox taught for one year in a one room rural school where there were twelve students in five dif- ferent grades. He has been scoutmaster of Troop :H:6 for fifteen years and was District Commissioner of the Hudson District of the Rockland County Council, B.S.A., for three years. Always interested in athletics, he has been coaching six-man football for many years, and assisted with the track team. This year, he has taken over the cross-country coaching duties. His unusual abilities have not gone unrecog- nized - offices which Mr. Cox has held are many. He has been president of the Nyack Faculty Association, Chairman of the Junior High School Section of the Southeastern Zone of the New York State Teachers Association, and president of the Rockland County Teachers' Association. At present, he is the chairman of the Rockland County Mathematics Teachers. As we students follow our way down the paths of time, we will always remember this man whose sincere devotion to youth and teach- ing endeared us all to him. K. R. What type of cover would be best? Xvhat superlatives should we use? How many senior portraits will we have on a page? These questions were discussed and answered at meetings and the various depart- ments went to work. Photographs were taken, write-ups were handed in, superlatives were chosen, and seniors began ringing doorbells to sell advertisements and boosters. There were many last minute de- tails to be decided upon and many members of the staff came to school during vacations. Then that day in january came when everything was complete. Wie had met the deadline!! Wie of the Tower staff have enjoyed bringing this yearbook to you and hope that its pages will remind you of all the good times you've had and friends youive made at Nyack High. We wish to thank Mr. Wray, Mr. Englander, and all the members of the administration, faculty, and student body who have helped us this year. First How: Nl. Notson, H. Traverson, N. Savoury, K. O. has achieved many note- worthy improvements for the student body. By presenting a system of traffic, the G. O. has successfully solved the problem of crowded corridors that has been causing us concern for many years. Besides being an organization that tries to solve our problems, it also sponsors recreation for the student body. This is done by giving a C. O. Dance, at which the football queen and her ladies-in-waiting are crowned. Through the work of the G. O. we have a G. 0. Court. Functioning since 1948, the G. O. Court is recognized by the students as one which will deal fairly with every case. r . fi., Q7 First Row: R. Merkert, R. Thompson, N. Reiter, S. Finan, K. Dahlherg, J. Cohen, S. Denker, L. Hecht. The YM Dance Club, under the supervision of Mr. Gerald Hoffman, has sponsored many activities to provide recreation for its members. Besides the regular Friday night sessions, Dance-Club members enjoyed splash parties, a Christmas dance, and a Valentine Hop. The Dance Club council, which consists of two representatives from each class meets and plans the season's social functions. Those on the council are: President Bernard Kaplowitz and Kathleen Laracy from the senior class, vice- president Steven Kurland and Betty Cohen from the junior class, sec.-treas. Gail Latham, Richard Yerg, and James Ciancimino from the sophomore class. Two lunches a day, many banquets, and teas are prepared by Mrs. Marjorie Morgan, dieti- cian, and her staff. The team record of 5 wins, 1 tie, and 1 loss for the season brought Nyack the Rockland County P.S.A.L. Co-Championship. Individual honors were won by 9 members of the starting club as they were chosen on the Rockland County Honor Teams. The spectator, player, and coach will well remember this 1954 Football season as they saw a determined, well spirited group of athletes perform in topnotch form in all games played. Port Jervis, fielding a strong team, was the opener for the season. A 12-12 final score was the net result of the game and an indication that Nyack had potential as they were able to come from behind and score. The Hackley School game, held at Tarrytown, proved to be a tight, well played game as Nyack won by a 25-24 score. Opening in county competitior Haverstraw was decisively defeated by a 40-I total. The team showed the tremendous spiri1 BALL R. Reavis, R. Scheinler, T. Ryder. Third Row: Coach Crzibowski, Man. Kenny Owen, R. Royster, C. Lankan, D. Dennehy, J. Peebles, Coach Rudy Rejholec, C. In the Spring Valley game our squad won by a 13-0 score. It was a well played game as Hurricane Carol and Spring Valley were determined to stop the Indians. Sulfern defeated Nyack by a 33-20 score as they were well up for the game. Our team returned to its winning ways as they defeated a strong Tappan Zee team in a sea of mud by a score of 21-13. Pearl River went to defeat by a 19-0 score, as Nyack once again demonstrated excellent play. QUIPS A memorable year to be sure . . . The return of the captain Walt Melitz and other veterans of the mat as Val Dagaev, Frank Bibbins and Roger Brown paces our boys in practice and in our meets. Watching the Nyack Grapplers one would find wrestling in the 95 lb. class Joe Soll, 103 lb. class - Clif Davis, 112 lb. class - Walt White, 120 lb. class - Eric Schweikardt, 127 lb. class - Don Savell, 133 lb. class - Clif Ferrison, 138 lb. class - Captain Walt Metlitz, 145 lb. class - Val Dagaev, 154 - Ellis Duggins or Carmen Desimone, 165 lb. class - Frank Bibbins or Dave Oliver, and in the unlimited class - Roger Brown. Having suffered its first defeat to a strong Ramsey squad the Nyack Grapplers decisively defeated Clarkstown and a veteran Hackley school team, and expect to continue on with its winning ways as they meet with Leonia, Haver- straw, Suffern and Valley Stream. GOLF The '55 golf squad promises to be one of the strongest in the history of N.H.S. golf. Not a single man has been lost through graduation from last year,s near-championship team. This team finished 2nd to Piermont in the county, and 3rd out of 14 schools in the section 9 championships. The boys are out for blood this year - they plan to be second to no one! Even in defeat the boys fought relentlessly to the last moment in each game. Wvith this type of attitude and determination the second round should show an improved record. Many of the returning veterans have shown excellent improvement, and the team has added some strong new freshmen such as Charlie Ulrich, Ronnie Breland and Glenn Miller, all of whom have won points for old N.H.S. The improved stock of veterans includes Pete Esmay and Footie Glynn in the individual medley joint, and the backstroke, Prentiss Breland in the dive., and Stephen Denker in the freestyle round out the seniors. The Varsity and Junior Varsity Cheerleaders, which have become a traditional part of the sports and social program at Nyack High School, are the result of the energy and cooperation given by twenty-two sophomore, junior and senior girls throughout the school year. The cheerleaders, under the supervision of Miss Helen P. Cooke, have given generously of their time and their effort and have stimulated school spirit at the various athletic events. The cheerleaders also sponsor several dances after the games in order to raise money for their own equipment, and to contribute to worthy school projects. Freshman Cheerleaders are selected by the Varsity Cheerleaders. Each week, the girls elect a Varsity Captain and a J.V. Captain, who are responsible for the various team activities. The necessary qualities for membership are pep, dependability, cooperation and good scholarship. FRESHMAN CHEERLEADERS i931 First Row: B. Koblin, E. Boepple, M, Vice, T. Mann, L. Hanley, J. Green.
